Geoffrey 861
I have this weird obsession to check out all of the local channels' forecasts whenever snow is on the way. Well, maybe it's not so weird around these parts. Anyway, in case you're interested, here are snapshots of the local forecasts from 6:00 tonight: http://gsorensen.tumblr.com/post/42536648903/winter-storm-nemo-forecasts Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12428-nemo/ Share on other sites
Jess 1115
You miiiiiiiight want to put "Winter Storm" in the title there, Geoffrey. For a minute there, I thought this was a thread about Finding Nemo. XD And, of course I have to note that WINTER STORMS DO NOT HAVE NAMES. SHUT UP WEATHER CHANNEL. *aherm* Sorry. I can't take that concept seriously to begin with, much less a list that contains such batshit names like GANDALF. (okay, GANDOLF but still) Unless NBC News uses it - which they wisely don't seem to be I've been following the insane rampaging cop story in LA, so I haven't paid attention to Philly's forecasts, but we're getting a weird track that has a rain period, so the forecast all over the place. I'm getting the feeling we're getting much more than the 3-6 that 6ABC is forecasting. New York went from expecting 6 inches earlier today to now looking at a foot or better...so yeah, Philly'll top 6" easily. Geoffrey 861
I agree with you, HulkieD, that The Weather Channel choosing to name winter storms is silly. But is the National Weather Service/National Hurricane Center naming tropical storms and hurricanes any less silly? I think the only difference is cable channel vs. government service and new vs. old... Maybe it catches on, who knows. Anyway, I did hear ABC 7 reporter Dave Evans call it Nemo during a live report last hour. I thought it was only a Weather Channel/NBC/Comcast thing. Here's my roundup of forecast maps as of 5:00 p.m.: http://gsorensen.tumblr.com/post/42614118017/blizzard-forecasts Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12428-nemo/#findComment-78847 Share on other sites
24994J 5577
CBS (local/national/radio) has referred to "Nemo" a lot, too. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12428-nemo/#findComment-78849 Share on other sites

Here's my roundup of forecast maps as of 5:00 p.m.: http://gsorensen.tumblr.com/post/42614118017/blizzard-forecasts Here's some good articles explaining the why The Weather Channel wants to name winter storms and why the National Weather Service wants to hold off on doing so. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/09/us/winter-storms-name-means-very-little.html?_r=0 http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-02-08/killing-nemo-weather-channels-storm-name-irks-some I, for one, like the the name that Bill Ritter came up with on tonight's 11pm newscast. After Lee Goldberg said that the worst of the storm was upon us and would impact us in a short time from midnight thru 3am, Bill said we should call it "The Midnight Express".
