Samantha 2902 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Duke University holds a digitized archive of the slide library of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America with images of billboards. Naturally, local TV is in the mix. Here is about half of their TV stuff. http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA2899/ (KPNX 1987, "We're Going Where You're Going") http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1810/ (KNXV 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1183/ (KCBS 1985 — this one is gorgeous) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1161/ (KRIV 1985 — "The 7 O'Clock News") http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1164/ (KRLD 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA0460/ (WCCO 1983, "News for thinking people") http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA0462/ (WJKW 1983, "Believe in Goddard") http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA0469/ (WOR 1983, News 9 Prime Time) Some gorgeous design work in here. (My personal favorite of course is the KPNX one, but that's just me.)
channel2 982 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I like the KNXV Star Trek one the most, great colors and the iconic Enterprise. And a personal favorite typeface of mine, Frutiger. The pre-Fox KRLD logo is hideous, though.
KnoxvilleTVFan 286 Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 I also found some interesting billboards. http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA0467/ (WTLV 1983) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1157/ (WLNE 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1817/ (WNDU 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1160/ (WSAV 1985)
News 9 Viewer 100 Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 My favorites are the KNXV Star Trek billboard (the Enterprise flying over the Arizona desert is just an awesome image, and like channel2 said the colors used are beautiful) and the WOR News 9 Primetime billboard.
sanewsguy 514 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1160/ (WSAV 1985) Since when they did use the Group W style 3 logo? Interesting find.
CircleSeven 1960 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I also found some interesting billboards. http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1160/ (WSAV 1985) OMG, that "3" looks real "ooo-gly" (not ugly). It's nothing compared to the actual KYW Group-W 3 logo. I love it nevertheless.
Samantha 2902 Posted July 7, 2013 Author Posted July 7, 2013 That must be where Anklepants came from.
ToriElectra 292 Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Kinda funny how the KPNX billboard is on a Gannett-owned billboard (they've since sold those off to what's now CBS Outdoor, though they originally came from Combined Comm.), but their 12 logo at that point is horribly ugly. :ack:
bammy9 26 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Found a few that I liked. http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA0521/ (WSVN, 1983) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1143/ (WJKW, 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1156/ (KGAN, 1985) http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaslidelibrary_SLA1189/ (Unknown station, 1985)
Samantha 2902 Posted July 10, 2013 Author Posted July 10, 2013 That last one is probably KABC. The WSVN one is really intriguing; keep in mind, they had just changed their calls from WCKT.
