45 Years Of Channel 7 Eyewitness News

The birthday was technically yesterday, but here now the news: 45 years this week, Al Primo introduced his newfangled "Eyewitness News" formula to WABC-TV New York. This version was the one that encouraged reporters to show a little more of themselves and engage in some banter. This has been derided, and in some cases, has devolved into "happy talk". Happy Talk is mock-teasing the meteorologist for the cloudy sky outside. What EWN had - especially with Roger Grimsby - was dry wit deeply laced with sarcasm.

The new EWN took off immediately. But it took them a few years to find a foil for Roger Grimsby. They found Bill Beutel - and formed the greatest news team to anchor in New York. Sorry, Chuck and Sue.

So two toasts - to EWN, and to Roger and Bill, hopefully making sure that heaven's news is good news.

WWL-TV Channel 4 Eyewitness News hit 45 this year, too, having changed its title from Evening News on February 26, 1968. Bill Elder, sportscaster Lloyd "Hap" Glaudi and then-new meteorologist Al Duckworth were amonsgt the first personalities at Channel 4 to see off its new Eyewitness News format on its maiden voyage that year. (All three of course have since went to their reward...)

And in homage, I created this special collage of Channel 4 Eyewitness News intertitle graphics over the years. :)
