They're like nothing else I've ever seen, and they probably deserve their own thread. I've put all of the videos from my different Japan posts here. They are highly interesting. Next to them are some of the more interesting notes about each. Newscasts with a (B) are bilingual with split Japanese/English audio; a translation service would be hired to produce the English live translation of the newscast. I think this is still done today. It's a regional news round-up with news from various NHK bureaus across Japan, similar to the UK's BBC's UK Today. It airs on NHK BS1. Unlike UK Today which airs just from the same news studio at BBC TV Centre every day, Retto news goes to a different NHK bureau across Japan each week. On the week this video was recorded they're broadcasting from NHK's Aomori's bureau. At 3:43 (the same video) is Hot Asia, also broadcast on NHK BS1. At 4:11 is the theme tune for NHK Sports. At 5:31 is an announcement regarding the temporary stoppage of overnight broadcasts on NHK General TV for technical maintenance. In case of emergency (such as earthquake or typhoon) they will start broadcasting again. They do this on certain weeks on certain regions. This is followed by the Japanese national anthem, a view of the earth with the NHK General TV logo and finally the NHK station callsign ident (in this case it's JOBK-DTV in Osaka where this video was recorded).
