He's been with the station since 1996, giving him some power and influence in the station group. With a new leader, that pull will be lost. There is really no reason for ABC to be so lean given it's under a diverse media company like Disney. I'm wondering with this retirement will lead to more devastation to ABC, first with the O&Os then it will trickle down to the network then the affiliates will get screwed.
