Neilium 0
MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski decided to have a little fun with the Paris Hilton story on Morning Joe Tuesday morning. After refusing to read the story - she (at various times) tore up the script, threatened to burn the script, wadded up the script - and shredded the script. MSNBC.com gave the video big play - and it is still lingering at #2 on the site’s list of most viewed video. With more than 97000 diggs, the video is also one of the ten most dugg stories ever to appear on Digg (based on numbers from May 27, 2007) - no doubt helping the video views. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6VdNcCcweL0 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1486-msnbc%E2%80%99s-anchor%E2%80%99s-paris-fit-storms-web/ Share on other sites

mbhcity 3
First it was the Menendez Bros, then OJ and Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan, then Monica Lewinsky and Clinton, then Chandra Levy, and maybe a few others on the side. These celebrity gossip stories need to stop and I guess the partial concensus in the journalism field is that they too are tired of "spying" if theres a better word to describe it on some blonde girl, though there are those who do it out of impulse and others who do it just for the money. Cheers to Mika and MSNBC for this critical piece. You may be down on the ratings, but I'll take them over the sex and gossip-crazed Bush News Channel anytime. kjohnson 17
Finally, somebody says "enough already" with non news stories. I personally don't have anything against Paris Hilton, but the top of the hour news summary isn't the place. Paris Hilton is more important than dosmestic and international affairs? I think not. alaskanews 113
whoever that producer was, deserves a swift kick in the balls, leading with paris hilton multiple times, when im sure something is happening in iraq, bush's immigration bill was going up in flames and im sure there were other things going on around the country/world. mika gets some serious respect from me Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1486-msnbc%E2%80%99s-anchor%E2%80%99s-paris-fit-storms-web/#findComment-13590 Share on other sites
mbhcity 3
It's not the networks fault for airing the report...Personally I blame it on the money-hungry executives...these are the ones who are responsible for stuffing propaganda upon us, such as focusing on a blonde girl as opposed to reporting about a mendacious war which is more than ever becoming unpopular, and the administration that carried it. It's people like Les Moonves and Rupert Murdoch that are doing this. trey 0
As a news manager...I'm a little torn between this story. I apologize in advance for my ramblings...my boss and I had a pretty heated discussion on this issue this morning. Ha! First off -- the publicity that has resulted from her actions is pretty incredible. It resulted in a lot of exposure for MSNBC and no matter how you slice it -- this video got their newscast exposed to audiences they probably would have never been exposed to otherwise. Exposure like this is something no amount of money can buy. While probably would have prefered for the exposure to come from something slightly more positive, you take what you can get. On the other hand -- this is what editorial meetings are all about. This is why we have them. The news anchor destroyed the credibility of that newscast. To me, it made the show look poorly produced, poorly planned, and completely unprofessional. She said that the producer "wasn't listening to her." In most newsrooms, news anchors are very important in the story selection process. They tend to be the most connected to the viewers -- so the feedback they provide is extremely helpful and is always taken into consideration. BUT, it is the producers job to ensure they are covering timely issues that he or she feels their viewers care to know about. The producer obviously felt that the Paris Hilton story was something that his/her viewers would care to be informed about. Like her or not, she did become a news story. People did follow her plight. The story had to be told. Would I have put it as the lead story...probably not, but do I frown upon the producer for doing so? Absolutely not. The news anchor and producer obviously discussed the issue. The news anchor didn't win? So what. She should have never carried the disagreement to the airwaves. Schedule a meeting with her supervisor and talk it over. I would bet money that if she would have just read the story as produced - NO ONE watching at home would have batted an eye. The producers job is to produce the news. The news anchors job is to read the news. In my eyes, she did not do her job and if I were running things she would have gotten a stern talking to. It just did not come across as being professional and certainly did not look like it came from a national cable news channel. I'm all for people standing their ground and sticking up for what they believe in...but there is a time just to suck it up and give in. This appears to have been one of those times. NowSTLexNY 1
Dan Abrams and company should have had the testicular fortitude to rise above this and not report the "story". In the broader scheme of news and world issues, not to mention the continued combat exercises killing our young people for who knows why, this story had no place on the airwaves. On Entertainment tonight, maybe, On credible news outlets, please. Her 5 min of fame are over years ago, and most folks are turned off by the story. MSNBC should have taken the high road, they didn't, and having that disagreement aired publicly is unfortunate but reality. I'm glad the anchor stood up, but, her management should be embarrassed. I know they have lots of air time to fill, and its the same stuff over and over, but there are far more important stories and issues to discuss. I hope I never hear of Paris Hilton and her stupidity ever again, and NBC can return to the serious news organizaton MSNBC should be.
