Although not official yet--nobody even negotiated, sources say that conversations within the division have began. His contract expires in December.

Even though his departure was imminent for some time now, it's still sad to see him leave the program, and to watch the program without him.

(And yes, before you ask, this is in the wrong place. I wanted this in the National News thread, but clicked the wrong thread.)

When Osgood goes, so does CBS Sunday Morning. Get ready for CBS This Morning Sunday.

Not a chance. Sunday Morning is a gold mine for CBS. Whether Jane Pauley, or someone else, gets the job, it will still be the same show.

In my opinion, I'd rather see Lee Cowan become his successor.

I enjoy his presentation style and I thought he does great filling in for him the in several times over the years. He's essentially perfect for the role.

Although...Mo Rocca would be a great choice too.

Putting Mo Rocca in Charles Osgood's place would be like if Andy Rooney had become one of the main presenters of 60 Minutes. His strength is out in the field telling the story in his own unique way rather than being the main host of it all.

Brian Stelter's email list says CBS wanted today to be all about Osgood, but that Jane Pauley is the favorite to take over. I agree about Mo Rocca being best out in the field. I also think it would make sense in theory to use this opportunity to tie it closer to CBS This Morning, but if the ratings are as good as they've always claimed they are, then there's probably little reason to mess with the format.

Charles Osgood will still do his thrice-daily radio commentaries ("The Osgood Files") produced by CBS News and distributed by Westwood One d/b/a the "CBS Radio Network" - he's under contract by both entities for the next few years.

"See you on the radio."

I thought Anthony Mason was a prime candidate for the gig, but it looks like he's firmly established at CBS This Morning: Saturday.
