YES NETWORK may become part of Disney/ESPN

If the speculation is true, Disney and 21CF should be announcing tomorrow that Disney is buying Fox's movie and television studios, cable channels including FX, NatGeo, and their shares of SkyTV in the UK and Star India. Also included will be the Fox Sports Regional Sports Channels, including YES since Fox bought controlling interest in YES a couple of years ago. Whereas, FSN has not changed too much at YES, seeing YES ESPNized, will be sad to see.

At least WABC will have more sports. Too bad ESPN, having already lost a lot of viewership because of cordcutting, thought that letting politics get in the way of sports was a good idea. Big mistake. And as a result, among others, their former sidline reporter Brit McHenry has joined the most hated news channel on this website... Fox News.

The Yankees still control their broadcast rights pretty well and pretty much refused most of the Fox Sports Networks tweaks (especially 'embrace debate'). They'll continue to exercise their right of first refusals pretty liberally under ESPN so that 'hawt takes' won't become a regular part of the network. The worst that'll probably happen is that the few Yankees broadcast games move to WABC, or even the Live Well Network. Since they're based in Stamford like the NBC Sports Group, a spin-off to Comcast would make more sense, though it would monopolize NY baseball onto Comcast networks.

Not sure the few OTA games would move to WABC considering they have been on PIX11 the last few years despite Fox's ownership. If Sinclair decides they will not pay the fee (possible since they are a cost cutting organization in reality), then the other stations may bid for it including CBS to broadcast on WLNY, that is unless CBS plans on moving the CW affiliation away from Sinclair once they take control of PIX11. As for selling to the NBC Sports Group (Comcast), that still could be a possibility. Their investment in SNY is much smaller. And remember, years ago, Cablevision owned all three (at that time) RSNs: MSG, Sportschannel and Sportschannel Plus). It was probably that move that got the Yankees to realize they could own their own RSN that launched YES. Time will tell.

Not sure anyone uv talked to has complained about politics in ESPN reporting outside of those who believe Trump’s word to be the gospel truth, guessing that includes you.

Most people have pointed to their annoyance with the new changes to replay and the length of sporting events as the reason they’ve stopped watching.

The Yankees and Mets games on WPIX are time-buys. YES and SNY produces the broadcasts and pays PIX to air them. And it’s a total of 45 games per season between both teams, mostly during the summer months so it’s not hurting anyone.

Other than WGN-TV, I seriously doubt that the few remaining over-the-air stations that still carry local MLB/NBA/NHL games are actually paying rights fees to teams. Those days are loooooong gone.
