Are CBS O&Os going to pot in quality?

I bring this up because of late, it just seems to me that CBS O&O have been going downhill or just treading water. Let's review shall we?

KCBS - Judging by the reaction to the new graphics, this station is unwatchable.

Have you taken the time to watch KCBS News? They are quality journalism. You just can't judge by graphics. Let's use your point shall we? According to you, WABC - Judging by the reaction to their graphics, this station is unwatchabe. It's all bullshit. It's the journalism, not the fing graphics. When you take the time to watch KCBS News, then use another argument. This argumet is bullshit.

I think all of the former Group W stations (except WBZ) are either the best in their markets (KDKA, WJZ, KPIX) or have made major strides in the last few years (KYW). KYW is doing well because they have many veterans who have stuck with the station even through their most horrible years and have made a few big acquisitions in 2003 with Marc Howard, Kathy Orr, Larry Mendte, and Alycia Lane.

I've always looked at the new KYW as the polished turd effect. Everything looks good on paper but when you look at the overall product, there's no real substance. Their evening newscasts look like (half)hour infomercials with flashy graphics, weather reports and fluff pieces interlaced.

I think they get ratings because they attract viewer with dumb promos ("That's Why I Love This Town" promo anyone?), name recognition, and the also the fact they dumb down the newscasts to the point where you only need an IQ of 65 to watch and comprehend what's going on.

I live in Southern California and from time to time I watch Channel 2 and Channel 9. They have both been struggling in ratings for many years. Especially since Channel 2 fired the great Jerry Dunphy in 1975.

Did you know that in May 2006, they grabbed the #1 position? CBS 2 is right now at the number 2 position at 11PM, not bad. But they could do better. KCAL 9 even beated KTLA for 2nd place. You are living in the phantom of the past. So what if the fired Jerry Dunphy? It bitted them in the ass for 30+ years, but they have done many things to regain the viewers confidence. And I agree with Eric, KYW's newscast is full of fluff when you watch it

Yes to whoever said it before, wcco is pretty good. THey just got new graphics, and what I've seen of their building on the outside (and on tv in the inside) it's pretty nice. It's our only station in downtown mpls and they remodled a couple years ago.

their ratings are consistantly first or second

I must say, although my info is dated, I was able to tour when the renovations occurred and the "new" street side set premiered (the one facing west, I believe). I find it kool they are located in an outdoor mall. This would never fly in FL - ask WTVJ in Miami, its close to an outdoor mall.

When they remodled, they actually made 2 new sets, one on nicollet mall, which they use for mornings and the 5 oclock news and on the "wcco plaza" on the other side of the building for the 6 and 10. The weathermen sometimes do the weather out there, and occasionally the anchors will come out as well. They also use the plaza for live concerts.

I know in other cities, multiple stations have streetside studios, but in the twin cities, wcco is the only one.
