John2016 7
What has become of this show? I remember back years ago when the station created the show and they developed multiple hours to showing sports highlights and interviews on their stations - KCBS & KCAL. Now they reduced the show to only half hours on Saturdays and Sundays, and sometimes having no airtime at all on the station on weekends. KCAL still has their sports central at 10:30 or 10:45pm weeknights. I remember before, KCBS would air at least 90 minutes of sports central after their network sports programming each weekend on Saturday and Sundays. The cost cutting has spread from the sports central department to their news department as well. I don't think the reason is just to save on $$$. Does anyone have any other ideas? KABC has been adding more local sports highlights on their station every Saturday during college football season and NBA season on weekend afternoons. Samantha 2895
I think some of it's just that sports highlights have become commoditized by apps. In some shops, you're seeing the axing of separate sports departments. Now, of course LA is a large market with no shortage of sports to talk about (two of everything in the major sports including college football), but it's a sort of times-have-changed approach. The Internet has disrupted consumption patterns for sports content generally, and more recently the disruption of sourcing (read: The Athletic) has come to the fore. I'm sure there are also some KCBS/KCAL-specific reasons; perhaps the ND wanted to deemphasize sports, or it wasn't finding as much of an audience as expected. FiveNews 372
Along the same lines, I'd like to know how many days in a row Jim Hill works. We all know Jim is legendary. He is the true dean of LA sports, but I tuned in to Rams preseason last Saturday and there he was. I mean damn! When does he get a day off? With the departure of Jill Arrington, who is his primary backup? I always liked Jaime Maggio, but she has 15 other jobs as well. Jim won't be around forever and it seems like KCBS hasn't figured out a succession plan. After Jim Hill and Pat Harvey, there is no reason to watch 2.
