susquvalleywgal 517
As you all know, the latter of August has the annual listings of DMA's ..... the great list that ranks the markets of TV news and it's stations. I think it's a great time to start this thread. Use this thread to discuss where you want your market to be this year. Who do you think will make a big leap this year? Who will make a great fall? As for me and market #41 (Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York), I would like us to be up above 40 this year. We are growing and I think it will be a good statement to this area. Discuss .... -- Matt Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1738-200708-dma-predictions/ Share on other sites
NewzPimpin 1
I predict Memphis will move up to 43 and that OKC will overtake Albuquerque/Santa Fe. I believe other small changes will cause Glendive and North Platte to finally fall off the DMA chart. allstar2003 0
I'm think that Columbus,OH will be at #35. I really can't see how we can rise higher, but I can see how we can drop a couple of spots. NewsMan 0
I bet Boston will stay at number 7. Ntropolis 596
I predict we'll stay at 42... I guess we're still growing, but with losing the Ford plant, I don't know if that took a big hit in TV households. kjohnson 17
Little change is expected in St. Louis. St. Louis will probably remain 21. Pittsburgh will hold at 22, and Sacramento will hold at 20. alaskanews 113
hopefully seattle will stop its free-fall and stay at 14 or move back up i really wish whoever compiles this list would take into consideration that the anchorage market broadcasts to the whole state, so instead of just 250K we really go to more like 700K. that would probably put us up around 100 or so. but alas, it will never happen Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1738-200708-dma-predictions/#findComment-16473 Share on other sites

someguy 0
The Phoenix market has been steadily moving up over the past 2 years and we were only slightly behind Tampa in terms over population as of last year, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Phoenix moved up to claim the number 12 spot. WXmanTim 88
The Phoenix market has been steadily moving up over the past 2 years and we were only slightly behind Tampa in terms over population as of last year, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Phoenix moved up to claim the number 12 spot. One would logically think that, unfortunately Nielsen seemingly employs little logic outside the top-3 markets. It counts "households" not total population. If they did, Houston would be in the top-five instead of barely being a top-ten. Houston is, according to the US Census Bureau, the fourth largest city in the United States (with 2.016 m residents - not including the suburbs where easily another one to two million people reside) but Nielsen only counts 1.938 m as total households making it the 10th largest market. In fact, San Antonio has a larger total population (1.256 m) than Dallas (1.213 m). But because of the number of counties that make up the Dallas/Fort Worth DMA (and by the way, Fort Worth only adds about 650,000 extra residents to Dallas's 1.213 m residents) they rank higher in total households. One thing that hampers Houston's market size is the fact that most of the fringe counties around the Houston metro are considered parts of other markets and that the Houston metro is very densely populated (most of the population lives in Harris, Galveston, Montgomery, Brazoria or Fort Bend Counties). Victoria (to the south down US-59) is its own market. Bryan/College Station (northwest up US-290) is part of the Waco-Temple market. Beaumont/Port Arthur (east on I-10) is its own market and parts of eastern Liberty and Chambers counties are considered part of that DMA and then there is Lufkin-Nacogdoches (north on US-59) which is its own market as well. But then again, according to Nielsen, there are several counties in Wyoming and Nebraska that are much much closer to Lincoln, NE, Cheyenne or Casper-Riverton, WY or Rapid City, SD that are considered part of the Denver DMA so go figure. : Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1738-200708-dma-predictions/#findComment-16515 Share on other sites
NewzPimpin 1
I predict Memphis will move up to 43 and that OKC will overtake Albuquerque/Santa Fe. Scratch that. After taking a closer look at the DMA maps, I have a feeling that Memphis might actually lose a county to Jackson, TN (most likely Dyer or Crockett). or to Jonesboro, AR (Mississippi or Poinsett). I say this because there has been somewhat of an exodus from metro Memphis population wise, therefore the non-Memphis DMA counties are receiving population boosts, especially the ones that border smaller DMA's. Therefore, after much more careful analysis, I believe Memphis will either stay at 44 or actually drop down to 45. I see OKC taking Memphis' 44 spot, Memphis down to 45 and Albuquerque/Santa Fe holding 46 all by themselves. PelicanGuy 117
New Orleans will either stay put at #54 or move up one or two notches as more people slowly move back into Orleans, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes. Baton Rouge will likely stay put at #93. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1738-200708-dma-predictions/#findComment-16532 Share on other sites
jdcnow 14
I'm hearing that Dallas Ft. Worth will move up to #4 and overtake Philadelphia. Anyone else hearing that? I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we did move up to 4. The southwest Collin County area (on the city of Dallas's north-northeast side) has had a population boom in recent years. You have one of the local high schools (Southlake-Caroll HS, on the northern side of Dallas) which happen to be one of the premiere high schools in the entire nation because of its football/athletics program (there have been several people who have made it to the NFL through Southlake-Carol). So people are seeing that this is would be a good place to raise a family, so they're moving in. The job outlook is decent in this neck of the woods. So, yes, I expect the DFW/North Texas region to be a top 5 DMA by this year, if not next.
