While 6 ABC and CBS 3 battled for first place at 11 p.m. during this November sweeps race, NBC 10, with no help from its dreadful prime-time lineup, limped into third place.

As of Tuesday morning (sweeps ends tonight), 6 ABC’s 11 p.m. newscast (Jim Gardner, Cecily Tynan and Gary Papa) leads with an 8 rating/16 share. (Each rating point is equivalent to around 29,000 households, and ratings are rounded to the nearest number.) CBS 3 (Larry Mendte, Alycia Lane, Kathy Orr, and Beasley Reece) is close behind with an 8 rating/15 share. NBC 10 (Tim Lake, Renee Chenault Fattah, Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, and Vai Sikahema) is third with a 5 rating/10 share.

Of course, network lead-ins are crucial to local news numbers. CBS 3 benefits from the highest lead-in, with a CBS primetime average of a 10 rating. 6 ABC gets a 9 rating from ABC, and NBC 10 gets a 6 rating from NBC’s lineup.

In other news races, at 10 p.m., Fox29’s newcast (Dawn Stensland, Dave Huddleston, Rob Guarino, and Don Tollefson) leads with a 4 rating/7 share. My17news, powered by NBC 10, follows with a 2 rating/3 share, tied with Dr. Phil on CW57.

At 6 p.m., 6 ABC (Gardner) rules with a 12 rating/22 share. NBC 10 (Lake) earns second place with a 4 rating/8 share, and CBS 3 (Mendte and Lane) is in third with a 4 rating/7 share.

At 6:30 p.m., ABC World News Tonight (Charles Gibson) leads with a 12 rating/21 share. Sadly, Two and a Half Men are better than two anchors: Reruns of the sitcom on myPHL17 are tied with The NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams (4 rating/7 share) and beating poor Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News, which has a 3 rating/5 share. At least Katie is beating The Simpsons and George Lopez.

At 5 p.m., 6 ABC (Rick Williams and Monica Malpass) leads with a 10 rating/19 share. Dr. Philadelphia has a 4 rating/9 share on CBS 3, Live at 5 (Vince DeMentri) is third with a 4 rating/7 share, and the Fox29 News at 5 p.m. (Kerri Lee Halkett) trails with a 2 rating/4 share.

At 4 p.m., Oprah on 6 ABC easily leads with a 7 rating/17 share. Judge Judy on Fox29 is second with a 4 rating/8 share, the CBS 3 news at 4 p.m. with soon-to retire Marc Howard and Angela Russell has a 3 rating/8 share, and NBC 10’s All That and More with Tracy Davidson is in fourth place with a 2 rating/5 share.

Also of note, at 11 a.m., NBC 10’s 10 show is getting destroyed by The View and The Price Is Right. The View, with new co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd, leads with a 5 rating/18 share. New host Drew Carey helped The Price Is Right gain a 3 rating/10 share, and 10 with Bill Henley and Lori Wilson has a 1 rating/2 share. On the bright side, co-host Wilson’s “muff” slip from a month ago is up to over 300,000 hits on YouTube.

In the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. slot, Good Morning America on 6 ABC leads with a 7 rating/21 share. The Today Show on NBC 10 is second with a 4 rating/7 share, Good Day Philadelphia on Fox29 is third with a 2 rating/7 share, and The Early Show on CBS 3 is fourth with a 2 rating/5 share.

And from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., 6 ABC’s newscast (Tamala Edwards and Matt O’Donnell) leads with a 5 rating/20 share. NBC 10 (Lori Delgado and Terry Ruggles) is second with a 3 rating/11 share, and CBS 3 (Ukee Washington and new co-anchor Liz Keptner) is third with a 3 rating/9 share.

Wow, indeed a close race for the late news in Philly.

If you look at the numbers, and do the math 10 got no help from NBC. Both 3 and 6 have their numbers because of their network lead-ins. Those are extremely important. I do agree though they need to help themselves more than anything else. Their promotion dept stinks for one. You see outdoor advertising all over the market for 3 6 and 29 but nothing for 10 aside from their two weather billboards on the Schulykill. Also their TV adverts are piss poor and at best are annoying. They need to hired either an imaging company (maybe they will when they go HD next spring) or a staff that can actually come up with good promos that will draw in an audience.

10 is fine in the other timeslots (save for the 4PM where it seems trash tv does better than local news). They are second at 6PM, 2nd in news at 5 (3rd overall) and 2nd in the morning.

The station to watch is going to be 29 though. If they rumormill holds true and they roll out with weekday 6 and 11PM newscasts they will be the station that has the best chance of beating PVI.

Actually ... these November numbers are pretty grim.

The BIG STORY on Action News Tonight ... is that Action News audience is eroding rather rapidly. And, IMO, they aren't doing anything wrong.

Too much city crime?

And no one is really replacing them. Look at all dayparts of each station's numbers.

Core audiences at Three and Ten seem fragile. And Three is losing M Howard, who was never really maximized as the asset he could have been.

Snow coverage and big story numbers may continue to show Six strength initially in new year.

If Fox adds all these newscasts, the pie may be even smaller to divide.

But, nothing indicates they are on a roll. Bolaris coming? So what? Great for people who want blizzard predictions.

Lead-in does matter to an extent, but when NBC was the top network and ABC was deeply in third, Action News still won, so it doesn't matter so much. Obviously people are wiling to pick up the remote.

It was sad to see 10! doing so poorly. Hopefully it still makes enough money for them to keep in on the air.

Lead-in is more useful if you haven't been Number One For Thirty Years ... duh!

CBS prime did something this time that was useful.

In NY, WCBS did comparatively well.

In Phila, KYW did well at 11.

And in Boston, a station which has a lot of problems, WBZ is claiming Number One at 11!

That Les Moonves is one hell of a news genius!

Meanwhile WNBC, and WCAU got clobbered at 11PM. It def counts for something.

WCBS has an incompetent main anchor team

And Les Moonves isn't that hell of a news genius. CBS Fluff Cake sucks at 6:30. I think CBS is having a good luck because of the NBC Meltdown.

Listen, leadins are important. However, it isn't the deciding factor. The great lead in CBS3 is getting is helping them compete with ch6, just as the great lead ins ch10 got during the late 90's helped them even beat 6 once. However ch6 has been consistently #1 thru the good and bad of ABC.

Time to face facts. Regradless if you like ch6 or not, everyone must accept that it is the most watched, and will remain that way until its core audience dies off, or someone at 6 is stupid enough to change the format.

I read an article about the ratings a few weeks ago when it had just started. Ch3 was winning at that point. It mentioned that ch6 was the only channel to see its ratings climb during the newscast. So obvisously, even those that give 3 and 10 a chance, must switch at the first commercial.

As for the 10! show. Its future isn't that bright thanks to NBC. Even when it came on at 10, it was getting beat by everyone (that that includes CW57, and MYPHL). Thats when its main competition was talk shows. So obvisously things didn't look great right away when word came they would be competiting with powerhouse programs like the price is right, and the view. Its a shame, giving it's the last local live daily variety program in Philly, and its really not that bad. I don't know why NBC10 just didn't keep 10! at 10AM, and have that 4th hour of today air at 11am. Then again, I Imagine that decision came from NYC, not Philly.
