Don Corsini Lands at KTLA-TV

Former KCBS-TV general manager Don Corsini has jumped to KTLA-TV, the CW affiliate in Los Angeles owned by Tribune. The longest-serving general manager in the history of the CBS owned-and-operated station, Corsini announced in August he would leave the CBS duopoly he managed at the end of his contract on Dec. 31.

"Don has an impeccable reputation in the Los Angeles market as a visionary and a leader who knows how to recruit and manage top talent," said Ed Wilson president of Tribune Broadcasting and Tribune's chief revenue officer. "His track record in news, programming, production, marketing and sales is without equal. In addition, Don has long-standing relationships with the area's major sports franchises and has negotiated broadcast-rights deals with them regularly."

A veteran L.A. broadcaster, Corsini was named general manager of KCAL-TV in 1996, rising to president and general manager of CBS' duopoly following its purchase of KCAL in 2002. More recently, Corsini oversaw the merger of the two TV staffs into one state-of-the-art facility at Studio City Broadcast Center.

In addition to CBS, Corsini also spent 15 years at KABC-TV, ABC's owned station. He was also one of the founding executives of regional sports network Prime Ticket (now Fox Sports). He also served as vp of original programming and development for Liberty Sports.

Variety makes note that Don Corsini has extensive experience in negotating sports deals and that KTLA is looking to expand its sports programming either through a digital subchannel or a regional partnership.

This is huge! He was huge at KCAL/KCBS! Now I wonder if some of the KCALers will jump ship.

I believe the Clippers' deal with KTLA is up at the end of this season, even though they're having another horrible year, 5 would probably look to keep the Clips. All of the other teams in the area are locked into long-term deals with their respective carriers. The Kings are the only local team without over-the-air coverage (just a 65-game package between Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket), and if KTLA is serious about expandings its sports offerings, maybe they and the Kings can come up with a 15-20 game a year package on weekends, much like WGN-TV's deal with the Blackhawks.

A great move for them would be to wrestle broadcast rights to Angels games away from KCOP. That would put them toe-to-toe with KCAL and their Dodgers broadcasts.

Nobody cares about hockey in Southern California. For that matter, we can't even support an NFL football team. The Dodgers, the Lakers, USC & UCLA football & basketball...and soccer if you want Hispanics...that's about it.

The Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim will never put you toe-to-toe with the Los Angels Dodgers. Period.

While the Angels may not be the Dodgers nor get the same amount of viewers, they are a good alternative for KTLA. A lot better than syndicated programs, having the Angels could increase KTLA's revenue a little bit. Let's hope that Corsini can do something good for KTLA, but I'm not holding my breath.

Clippers are the lowest rating NBA team. KTLA would be doing themselves a favor to get rid of the contract. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-arbitron29-2009jan29,0,7504580.story
