newswatch 1 Posted July 11, 2009 Share Posted July 11, 2009 In several markets, and few in networks, there are a few anchor teams, which consists of a female and a minority (black, hispanic, native-american). This trend started in the 1970s, where the need for women was in greater demand, and blacks no longer just worked behind the scenes. WJLA (ABC) in Washington, DC - It began during the 1990s. The anchor team and Paul Berry and Kathleen Mathews. Matthews is white female, and Berry is a black man, and they co-anchored the 6pm and 11pm newscast. Before Matthews retirement from news business, she had other black males co-anchoring with her. The same deal at rival WRC (NBC) Washington DC. It started in the early 1990s, where Jim Vance (african-american) and Doreen Gentzler (female) anchors the news at 6pm and 11pm. Jim has gone through many co-anchor changes, and they were all male (including Marty Levin pre-KNSD San Diego), but Gentzler was the first female co-anchor Vance has ever had. WTEV CBS-47 in Jacksonville, FL - Paige Kelton (white woman) and Mark Spain (black male) anchor several nightly newscasts. They do more than anchor the 5, 6, and 11 newscasts on CBS-47. They also anchor the 10pm news together on WTEV's sister station FOX-30 WAWS. WVTM (NBC) Birmingham, Alabama - There was an anchor team for the newscasts at 5pm, 6pm and 10pm. That anchor duo was Mike Moore (black man) and Theresa Durden (white female), and they anchored the three nightly newscasts together. KOAA (NBC) in my hometown of Colorado Springs, CO - I recall seeing the anchor team on the weekends during the early 1990s. The anchor team was Blake Chenault (black anchor who's now at WUAB in Cleveland) and Robin Adair (whatever happened to her?). They anchored the weekend news during the early-90s. Anyway, WCBS (New York City) - Maurice DuBois and Kate Sullivan anchor the morning and noon news together. WPVI (Philadelphia) - Rick Williams and Monica Malpass anchor Action News at 5. TennTV1983 767 Posted July 11, 2009 Share Posted July 11, 2009 I don't know too much about TV history, but in the Memphis market (since the 80s), it's always been the opposite (white male / minority female anchor teams): WREG (CBS) - Beginning in the mid-to-late 80s, their evening news consisted of an anchor team of Jerry Tate and Pam Crittendon. After Crittendon left the station, Tate was paired up with Pam McKelvy. Since the mid-2000s, McKelvey no longer works at the station and Jerry Tate has retired. The evening newscasts are now anchored by Claudia Barr (formerly of WHBQ) and Richard Ransom (formerly of WMC). WMC (NBC) - I think it started back when they had the anchor team of Mason Granger (retired) and Brenda Wood (now at WXIA-TV in Atlanta). Since that time, beginning in the 80s, Joe Birch (who replaced Granger) has been anchoring the news, and has been partnered with several minority female news anchors including Brenda Wood, Mearl Purvis (now at WHBQ), Kim Hendrew, Donna Davis (formerly of WJW in Cleveland) and currently Ursula Madden. WHBQ (formerly ABC; currently Fox) - Going back to the days when Claudia Barr was doing the news at that station, she had been partnered with Jerry Tate (who had a short stint at WHBQ before returning to WREG), Byron Day, and Steve Dawson, IIRC. Dawson and Purvis are the current evening anchor team at the station. WPTY (ABC) - When they started a news department from scratch in 1995, their first evening anchor team consisted of Lynn Carthane and Wendell Stacy (deceased). Currently, the news is anchored by Cameron Harper and Dee Griffin. I can think of a few instances where I've seen a white female/minority male anchor team: WKRG (CBS) Mobile / Pensacola - Mel Showers and Rose Ann Haven are the current anchor team for the evening newscasts. WSMV (NBC) Nashville - Tom Randles currently anchors the noon and 6:30pm newscasts with Jennifer Johnson. WPTY (ABC) / WLMT (CW) Memphis - Terrance Bates and Bonny Kinney are the current anchors for the morning and midday (11am) newscasts. WHBQ (Fox) Memphis - Valerie Calhoun and Ernie Freeman are the current anchor team for the morning newscasts from 6am until 9am. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ken McLeod (a white man) & Dawn Hasnbrouck (African-American Female). Co-anchor the Weekend Evening newscasts at WBZ. Steve Lacy (a white male) & Shiba Russell (African-American Female) co-anchor the weekend morning news at WCVB. Pam Cross (African-American Female) & Bob Halloran (A white male) co-anchor the Sat night news on WCVB. Do white majorities like (indian, filipo) count as well? Today, there are a myriad combination of anchor teams: female/female, male/male, female/male, black/white, white/white, black/black, asian/white, hispanic/black - the LIST(!) goes on and on...
