Gainesville tripoly will use INN for newscasts

Our friends at NewsBlues.com report that Gainesville triopoly WGFL/WNBW/WMYG has signed a deal with the Independent News Network to produce their local newscasts, entitled “The Gainesville Television Network” (GTN). As Florida News Center first reported a few weeks ago, the Gainesville duopoly announced a new newscast for the market to challenge rival WCJB (who has the only local newscast in the Gainesville market).

The Independent News Network (INN) produces newscasts for several other small market stations from Indiana to Alabama, via the studios of Davenport, IA’s KLJB FOX 18. INN will produce newscasts to air Monday through Friday at 5:30 and 11pm on WGFL, 6pm and 11pm on WNBW and 7pm and 10pm on WMYG. The stories will be gathered by reporters and videographers and then edited locally in Gainesville. The stories will then be sent to INN for the GTN newscast to be produced and anchored 1,100 miles away in Iowa.

Am I the only one who thinks INN is an absolute joke, and that it's just dishonest and a huge waste of time to pipe in news from another end of the country? Yeah, I know they use local reporters, but it still reeks of cheapness and viewers like local anchors they can connect with, which is hard to do when they're in a whole different state.

And the rumor was that former WCJB sports guy Joe Girvan was going to anchor it. I'm sure Gainesville residents aren't dumb and they're all going to still tune in to WCJB or WOFL err..WOGX. Even they just stuck to only having a little 6 and 11pm newscast that would've sufficed. During football season WGFL won't have the 6pm news on weekends due to CBS's SEC schedule and the NFL on most Sundays.

I think the'll do ok. Most people don't notice or (care):) about the INN setup, I think it might challenge WCJB somewhat, the crap with staff they've been pulling lately.

PS: I didn't realize Lisa Wolf was with them (I still remember her at Beartooth NBC!), but she hasn't been there long enough to be a long-timer as WCJB is saying.

Thoughts: It's too bad that the ND there is a tyrant, I have a very good friend there (he's an on-air guy, he's staying btw.) The owners generally cared about there stations in the past. Too bad they've gone downhill but there actually HD so go figure.

Here in Detroit, WMYD (the Granite-owned MyNetworkTV affiliate) once had its newscasts (which premiered July 14th 2008) produced by INN. The music was not good, the graphics was not good either, and the anchors were not great. As of August 2009, its newscasts are now produced by its sister station, ABC-affiliate WPTA in Fort Wayne.
