WPDE in Myrtle Beach is getting a new set, and when done their newscasts will be in widescreen SD. They look to be on a temp set right now. This will replace the old set from 1996 that was moved to their new facility in 2002.

Well it's about time. WPDE's weird funky set is finally getting the old heave-ho, weird wood elements and all.

Hmm widescreen SD up against WBTW? Meanwhile, neither of them dare go up against WMBF and go HD. If I've been reading correctly, WMBF since coming into the market in 2008 has managed to overtake both WBTW and WPDE in ALL time slots.

Maybe if WPDE goes HD and adopts better graphics and a music package that wasn't originally designed for FOX stations, then maybe they would have a shot to be #1 or even #2 again. For now though, WMBF and WBTW just make them look embarrassing.

I kinda liked the old set, but it needed to go. The desk was nice. It looked out of place though... no weather center or anything. It was like someone took a morning show set from the early 90s and made it into a news set.

Are you sure WMBF is #1? From what I understand, a lot of people in the area were upset that it replaced WIS on the cable systems, and its signal isn't as powerful as the others. Sure, they have the most streamlined, high-tech news op in the market but that doesn't mean they're #1. Personally, I haven't seen WMBF because from where I am when I'm down there (Bladen County NC) I can only pick up the Wilmington stations along with WBTW and WPDE.

I prefer WPDE over WBTW for some reason... not sure why...

Well at least it's number 1 in the Grand Strand, according to Neilsen ratings in their promo below. Although, there are a lot of stations now adays that claim they're number 1 when they probably aren't. You are right about their signal quality, very choppy in Charleston.

EDIT: According to the video this is based on the May 2009 ratings, now if you're correct, WBTW or WPDE could have resurged in more recent ratings. I have no way of knowing though, I don't know where you can find that out.

watching the set on youtube. why they be usin the X Package if they are an ABC Affilliate? isnt the X package only commissioned for FOX Stations? shouldnt they be using the X2 package?

Non-FOX stations can use the X package. They just don't get any cuts (or are not supposed to use the cuts) with the FOX drumroll. I believe the only markets where non-FOX stations can't use the package are markets that have an actual FOX O&O station. Since Florence/Myrtle Beach doesn't have an actual FOX O&O station (they have a FOX affiliate), they can use the package.

X Package has two different sets of packages. The Original edition was with the drumroll, just recently they added the Generic cuts. That package doesn't have the Good Day cuts attached to it either. So in reality it doesn't matter if a market has an FOX O&O attached to that market. A. They have their own package B. Most of the stations that were O&Os did not use the package at all. I think only KTTV and KDVR used the package as an O&O. As far as Myrtle Beach, hardly anything has been made of the market in a long time so to hear of WPDE going widescreen is good news to hear. The only reason why people "like" WMBF is that its HD. WMBF though is the only station RAYCOM has ever built and just signed on 3 years ago. Many people loved WIS and were contempt with WIS

I'm only saying that based on my experience with various O&O station music contracts I've worked with.. KTTV originally commissioned the music. I don't know exactly what FOX has going when commissioning new music, but with I know with CBS and ABC, when one of their station commissions a new music package, they typically have written in that in markets that have one of their own O&O station, no other station is to use the package other than their own O&O (whether that station chooses to use it or not). It's usually effective for the life of the package. I absolutely know FOX has the same with a few of their packages and I'm 99% sure The X Package is one of them. There were a couple instances where it was only a 10 year deal or some # of years for non-package promo music, etc.. It's not a music "free for all" just because another station in your market doesn't use a package like many here think or many composers/producers would like it to be (so they could make more $$)..

A good example would be In The Groove's Heart of our City package. WBBM was the station to commission the package and the only CBS O&O to use it. There are plenty of non-CBS stations using the package. However, if for some reason, KABC wanted to use the package, they couldn't due to the market having a CBS O&O and it doesn't matter if they're using it or not. The composer has to follow O&O contract agreement for music.
