PHL 17 Drops The "My"

I've kind of been expecting this for awhile now, but WPHL has finally eliminated "My" from its station branding and fully reverted back to its old, pre-WB name of "PHL 17".

Sort of.

This before and after reveals the stunning, groundbreaking new logo that assuredly took millions of dollars and the most high-end design studios to produce. That or a hastily-done revision to the MyNetwork logo that was done in an afternoon. You decide.

To be fair, they do seem to be doing some neat stuff on the one station ID I've seen so far, complete with a WPIX-like jingle. Still... I wonder why they bothered to adapt a logo for a dying network instead of just going with something new.

EDIT: Oh, and the station remains at its old myphl17.com address. PHL17.com was registered long ago by squatters, and until Tribune buys it back or starts advertising the "wphl.com" address, my is going to remain in the web address.

I wish they'd bring back the 1987-90 "17" logo or the 1990-95 revised "17" logo with "PHL" italicized. Heck, WPIX, another Trib station, brought back their circle "11" logo (1970-76, 1985-95) with the 1995-2006 "11" logo, somehow next year (i hope) PHL would bring back the "17" logo that I grew up with.

Has anybody checked out how their news at 10 looks now? Or what they're referring to it as? I keep meaning to but never remember.

I first noticed this on their new bus and billboard ads. It sucks that they've stuck with the MyNet logo, but it's not too terrible. I really like their quick station ID's featuring shots of the city and that little "P-H-L 17" musical signature.

Always interesting when a station makes a shift in their presentation.

That's actually the old Great Entertainer signature.

WPHL needs to do its own newscast. The market is so weak right now, this station could make a mark and make some money. As the Phillies station, they could really make a mark.

They tried this like 8,000 times before and it failed 8,000 times.

I disagree - news in Philadelphia is AWFUL - WPHL has a real opportunity - I agree that what they are doing at other Tribune stations is not the answer - but a real Philadelphia hyper-local newscast would be a pleasure. Plus - WPHL needs a newscast or it will lose the Phillie contract - there is no added value with that station.

Yes, that was then, but now sports teams want "extra value" and that come from A- spots and B - newscasts

News is not part of the Phillies deal.

Aside from that, what sort of value is The PHL17 News at Ten O'Clock Powered By NBC 10 and NBCPhiladelphia.com and Friends really giving the Phillies? Ratings? Extra money? Wild women? Ripping? Tearing?

If news were important to the Phillies when crafting an OTA TV deal, the hard 9:59 start would preempt a late ninth inning, not the other way around.
