Gannett Gets New Logo, Starts Promoting Itself

No more globe-G. (Boooooo!) The new logo is pretty much a Trebuchet wordmark, as seen on the new homepage.

And, the homepages of various Gannett properties. Apparently the aim is to associate Gannett's properties closer with its parent company, so "A Gannett Company" is showing up in the headers of homepages now. I'd also assume it'd have some presence on television, though apparently everyone's moving to "Multimedia Holdings Corporation" in the copyrights for some weird reason...

Has anything changed with the on-air branding of their stations? They're going to great lengths to plaster "A GANNETT COMPANY" on everything, so it's undoubtedly reflected on-air...

With all the "clutter" (ads, HD mention, slongans, etc.) many of the Gannett stations have tacked on to their opens, I'm sure they can squeeze a Gannett logo in there and even mention "A Gannett Company (or station)" in the open itself.

It's "A GANNETT COMPANY". All outlets, regardless of whether they're a TV station, newspaper, or website have to use it.

Oh, and they have a 100-page standards document telling you how to.

No, I'm not kidding.

It's quite interesting. Okay, I'm lying, but they tweaked some of the logos to fit that in there - even though the usage is anything but consistent...

That's nothing new.. And I'm pretty sure you'll be seeing some Gannett stations not following the document fully. Most companies out there (which allow individual locations, franchises, etc. with a certain level of creativity like restaurants, gas stations, media, etc.) have similar documents, books, binders, etc. on the standards/usage of their logo/brand. I can tell you 100 page is nothing. A few I've worked with in the past have been 300+ pages. Only if you got to look at the ones Subway or The UPS Store gives to their franchisees and I can say from seeing those personally, I've seen many of the franchisees not follow them. The one I still have from an old company I worked for a LONG time ago (no longer in business) is 586 pages (not including the index or contents) and that binder dates from the mid-'90s. You can be assured that a number of Gannett properties will break some rules..

Actually, after reading the Gannett one, they did a pretty good job simplifying it for their properties/entities. Most I've seen are filled with lots of legal mumble jumble and details/information that most people out there would never understand..

Well, I for one like the new logo. However, I can not say the same for the new NBC logos and the new Comcast controlled NBC Universal logo, oh well. I really like the new logo for Cincinnati.com, the website of the Gannett owned Cincinnati Enquirer! Anyway, it looks nice! It's just a logo anyhow, I cant see myself getting too worked up over it... I also like the new Gannett website design, much more understated and (I never thought I would ever say this about anything from Gannett) elegant. I'm not in love with the "A Gannett Company" concept, although. It wouldn't seem to be any more intrusive on a newspaper than the Scripps lighthouse is, but apply that to a television station, and it seems a bit like their desperate to show the world how much they have "reinvented" themselves. Now, if only they would reinvent the standardized graphics package!

First NBC' date=' now this? What's next? CBS loses is eye?[/quote']

No! Don't say that! How will CBS be identified then if the eye is no more? But IMHO, the new Gannett logo is a step down or a step up from the Deathstar logo they've had for more than three decades, whichever way you see it. Anyways, it better not be like the Gap logo (has nothing to do with television) where customers complained about the new look.

You won't have to worry about that anytime soon.. The eye is too important to the guys that run CBS and they even have their own set of rules on how the eye can be used. The stations, especially the O&O's, that have misused the eye logo have been punished. The most I can think of anything happening to the eye is that the eye itself gets revamped but the eye would remain in one form or another..

Maybe I should be a bad person and send that to KSDK's webmaster.

I'm curious...what is improper usage of the eye, and how have the O&Os used it improperly?

I don't remember the "rules" off hand. I've heard there was a large doc file of rules but I myself have only seen a couple page doc file of rules floating around online. I believe the "eye" is supposed to be in the clear.. Shouldn't be overlapping a number in a station logo (like the 2001-02 WBBM "Works For You" logo). There are ways it shouldn't be used in graphics. I know corporate/execs weren't happy with the way the logo was used in WBBM's Giant Octopus graphics back in 2001-02 but they don't look much different in those graphics than they do now in the current CBS O&O graphics. It's one of those things that if they see something they don't like about the eye in a station's work, they'll let the station know. CBS seems to be more strict on their eye than I've seen NBC is on their peacock or ABC is on their circle abc logo.

How does WBTV get away with their awful logo?

Look at WTVR here in Richmond. They don't have the eye in the "CBS 6" logo (they've been using it since 2002 or '03) Heck, Cfif complained about it a few times. And WRIC recently started using the ABC logo beside the "8".

But back to Gannett's new logo. I like it and their slogan too.

Thank you. That's an interesting site, even though it does appear to be a bit dated.

That's the simplified one I've seen. I've heard there's an actual hard copy that the stations receive with much more detailed information.

How does WBTV get away with their awful logo?

It's a Raycom Media station, so you already know how they mutilate the "FOX" logo with their "Southeastern Media Holdings" stations. They seem to believe they can invent a version of a network logo and get away with it...

The current WBTV logo is from 1999 (the "3" was originally red), when the station was owned by Jefferson-Pilot
