WAGA goes O&O

Yes, all those promos I had been hearing about were true, FOX 5 Atlanta has taken the plunge into the world of Station Standardization. At least they didn't get the stupidly flashier HD version that WTXF got (with the tilting 29 and all that), but they had to dump HOTHAUS GRAPHICS for this! What an irony! If I were News Corp, I would have gotten Hothaus to make the entire graphics package for this, although the graphics are nice though...

WOW i like their set! its different than the other O&O's. Have any caps of the news desk? Question: was WAGA always "Good Day Atlanta" ? or were they previously FOX 5 news morning or something like that. I feel that some of the O&O's are switching. Here in Detroit I have been waiting forever for them to get rid of their 10 year old set. Also I am wondering if we will get our own "Good Day Detroit" instead of "FOX 2 News Morning" which I don't really like. Can't wait for the changes hope we are next!

It has been Good Day Atlanta for a long time. Anyways, I think that there interpretation of the O&O graphics are pretty good. I thought that WAGA's old graphics seemed to be a little dated to me. Does anyone know how old their old graphics were?

We don't have Good Day Chicago and they have benn 0&0 for a while.

Yeah, several O&O's don't use that name as they aim a bit more towards a more news oriented newscast. WJBK and WFXT use Fox 25 (or 2) News Morning, WFLD, KTBC, WJW (from 6-9 only), and KTVI use "...In The Morning" (Leading to the famous mouthful, "Fox News Chicago In The Morning". Come on, change it to "Fox News Chicago This Morning" or "Fox News Chicago Daybreak", or even just use "Good Day Chicago" if you have to!), KMSP and KRIV use Morning News, KSAZ uses "Fox Arizona Morning", we also have "FOX6 Wake-Up News", Fox 6 This Morning, Good Morning Memphis, and the rest.

Also, it couldn't have been 5 years, I think they may had changed around 2005, since this screenshot (from a very hilarious viral moment from Good Day Atlanta) from 2004 uses a different bug. I think with their current old graphics set, it's all transparent (unless there is an L3 up), sorta like WCBS's low-quality bug...

The old graphics WERE Hothaus graphics, okay?

That clip isn't from 2004. Melissa Sander (the grape-stompin' gal), Gurvir Dhindsa, and Ken MacLeod were long gone before 2004.

Also, correct me if I'm wront but they have a different voiceover than the other stations?

I think that's David Kaye in the video, they were using Chris Clausen if I'm right. I think voiceovers are a station thing, their promotions dept. choose. Scott Chapin and Greg O'Neill seem to be popular with the FOX O&Os.

You know, wayyyyy back in the 90s WFLD's AM news actually *was* called Good Day Chicago...oh, the 90s...

I'm impressed with this incarnation of the FOX O&O look. This looks closest to the edition FOX 29 got in Philly, but it's executed a lot better, with a mix of some New York elements thrown in.

Agreed. WTXF has tweaked their gfx and it looks a lot better (no more tilting 29), but like with WCAU, I can notice right away which elements come from Fox News/Fox Network and which elements were made in-house, and it ain't pretty (although it's prettier than WCAU's locally-done gfx... oof)

hmmm...i'm not sure what all the excitement is about WAGA in Atlanta. Sure, I don't live there, but I 'do' live in Houston and KRIV Fox 26 looks EXACTLY the same. Same studio, same set up, same weather center, same graphics. Not sure what y'all have seen, but to me...it looks the same.

Oh well, no offense to anyone...that's just what this reporter has noticed.

Oops, two minutes to air... :p

If you really compare and contrast the O&O corporate set designs, there ARE differences - in many cases, pretty major ones. WTXF and WNYW, for example:

--WNYW's set is huge. There's an interview set, a huge video screen, "home base" (anchor desk, even with how little they use it there), full working weather center, and about a million stand-up locations that are used ad nauseum.

--WTXF's set is smaller. The huge video screen, "home base", and a few of the stand-up locations make it to the revised design. The weather center does too, but is much more scaled back and I don't believe it is a working one. (The weather center is used for non-weather stuff as well - the banner says "FOX 29 NEWS", no mention of weather). There is no "interview" set, just two chairs used at the three-plasma stand-up display. This is partially because Good Day uses their street-level "Studio 29" and weather had its own massive working weather center constructed just last year.

--WNYW's set has way different lighting and fixtures. There is silver and blue everywhere and the place looks like a spaceship- sleek, modern, but a little cold. Lights tend to cause a glare effect. WTXF's iteration uses a lot more wood textures and the lighting setup is different - and as a result, everything looks way warmer.

And that's only the set. Graphics I could go on all day about.

Now one funny thing I caught on last night's WTXF newscast. Note the channel number... then note the city...

BOSTON?!?!?! I have a hunch on how that may have happened :p

Now, who do you think will go to the O&O look next?

We still have WJBK (Detroit), WOFL (Orlando), WJW (Cleavland, in HD), KDVR (Denver), WITI (Milwaukee), KDAF (Kansas), KTSU (Utah/Salt Lake City, one I'm watching to see what they offically do with the logo, will they adopt the WTVT-ish 13?), WRBC (Birmingham), WGHP (Greensboro), and KTBC (Austin) to go, I personally think it may either be WJBK or WJW...

WDAF/Kansas City. KDAF is in Dallas.

My money $$$ is on WBRC, WITI, or KTBC. Mainly KTBC, since KDFW and KRIV have already changed.
