  1. Mostly a generic commercial compilation from a July 1987 airing of an adaptation of "Anna Karenina"; but a rarity around the 6:30 mark with a CBS News promo using the theme that would, that November, become the CBS Evening News theme for Dan Rather from 1987-91 and again for Scott Pelley for all but the last year of his tenure at the anchor desk.

  2. The same channel this copy of the first CNN newscast originated from also has rare rehearsal footage of the first 24 hour newscasts w/Walker and Hart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXJU7VIfrhw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg3tIXoGGgg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_ULpPZH6EA Also, ABC News Nightline w/Ted Koppel previews the then-soon to launch CNN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccNDC1_qf8s

  3. Vintage CBS Evening News and WBBM newscast from 1986. CBS Evening News anchored by Forrest Sawyer. Most of the time slot of the newscast was taken up by The Masters. WBBM newscast with Robin Robinson, Brian Rooney, Susan Wallace, John Coughlin, and Howard Sudberry. This is a personal rip from a tape I found at a yard sale this past weekend.

  4. Like what's happened in other outlets/newsrooms elsewhere in recent weeks, there seems to be a growing uproar against management at Fox 29; in this case, it's been described as "toxic, super-white, and Trump-apologizing." Some background: 1) https://www.phillymag.com/news/2020/07/13/ken-rothweiler-fox-29-firing-black-lives-matter/ https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2020/7/14/gone-in-philly-for-being-pro-blm July 13: Former Fox 29 Legal Analyst Ken Rothweiler, who had been at the station since 2009, alleged news director Jim Driscoll reprimanded and later fired him for being "too pro-BLM"/"too anti-cop" on his social media. Driscoll is alleged to have surveil Rothweiler's comments more closely in recent years. The tension reportedly erupted after Rothweiler sent an email to former colleagues discussing the nature of his firing, after which a fiery back-and-forth ensued. 2) https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2020/7/17/philly-we-have-a-problem July 17: An update from the previous development -- Rothweiler reportedly sent a letter to GM Dennis Bianchi with legal concerns after hearing stories of similar experiences. 3) https://www.phillymag.com/news/2020/07/21/fox-29-philadelphia-fox-news-conservative/ July 21: The Philly Mag 'exposé,' if you will, of the station was published, written by Ernest Owens. Former on-air talent (specifically a male anchor from 2013-2016; I think I know who, but won't name him if he's not named here) claimed management was "extremely white, conservative, and everything wrong you would expect from such leadership overseeing news coverage in a diverse city." Some of the incidents listed include the Lauren Johnson n-word incident, the infamous Burlington incident, and microaggressions such as when Sheinelle Jones "[sounded] 'too proud' when saying President Obama’s name on-air." Additionally, Driscoll reportedly put his "right-wing slant" on Trump-related headlines posted on the website for the station's stories and on social media. My thoughts? If anything, the allegations make the station sound like a tumultuous place to be working at, and even if you might have agreed/sided with management's reported opinions/proclivities, it still sounds a lot like walking on eggshells. Owens acknowledges that the station has more diversity in its on-air talent overall, but the conclusions are that the management seems to be the root of the problem. Driscoll has been with FTS since 2001 when it acquired WWOR and joined WTXF in 2012, the same year Bianchi joined as GM from WCAU. Rothweiler has threatened to possibly sue (allegedly, as reported in the first FTVLive link) but in the end, will any of this make an impact at Fox 29/raise eyebrows at FTS?

  5. This is also a sad reminder of what we have lost when CNN decided to follow Fox News and go the talk-radio-on-TV route.

  6. Finally found some more WNCT from the last "NewsCenter 9" era... the station had recently been purchased by Media General at this point. No newscast, but here's a promo with Allan Hoffman:

  7. I'm starting to go through a bunch of my old tapes again - so fair warning if you're a subscriber of my channel - you're about to run into a bunch of 1986-89 Houston & Cable TV content. That said, a more recent upload aside from commercials & movie opens & news stuff focuses on the sequences or segments I've simply just dubbed "legalese" in my uploads. They are the moments where general information about the station, technical data and copyright information is relayed and may or may not be accompanied by the SSB or similar patriotic song or sequence.... but don't necessarily lead to a sign-off or sign-on. This one is from KRIV, circa April 1986 (I've been able to narrow down to the week based on the episode of Star Search in a commercial compilation I posted), and runs just under 30 seconds. The first image is actually a vantage point from the roof of the former studios on Westheimer Road and Weslayan Street - one that would be recognizable to viewers of the Midday News in the early 90s, as this was often the backdrop for Matt Lavine's weather segment on the roof.

  11. I think LMAD on CBS w/Wayne Brady has lasted as long as it has because it has been a proven brand in the industry (and we can give much credit to the late, great Monty Hall for building that brand into a household name).

  12. And where is the money coming from to staff and produce a soap, without it being a joke? These employees are already ABC News employees, with experience in this type of production. It's not happening.
