  1. I don’t know if there is a thread for this, but Gray Television has updated their livestream players into HD for some legacy Raycom Stations. They are no longer pixely like the Raycom live-streams. Also when they go to break it says that you are watching a gray tv station. WMC’s livestream has been re-playing Friday’s live update during the Today show. They used the new livestream for the 3pm newscast yesterday. They also updated WLBT’s

  3. As promised, Portland (OR) witnessed deployment of ATSC 3.0 tech across seven stations on July 28, covering pretty much most of the English-language programming in the area. Meredith - KPTV (Fox 12) + KPDX ("Fox 12 Plus") Nexstar - KOIN (CBS) + KRCW (CW) Sinclair - KATU (ABC) Tegna - KGW (NBC) Oregon Public Broadcasting - KOPB (PBS) John Hane, president of BitPath (broadcast data services firm leading the transition here), said: More information can be found here: 1) https://tvnewscheck.com/article/top-news/251746/seven-portland-or-stations-launch-atsc-3-0/ 2) https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/major-broadcasters-launch-nextgen-tv-on-seven-local-television-stations-in-portland-or-301101679.html ------ In other news, this dives into the specifics surrounding the new emergency alert system launched by the ATSC group. Earlier, I mentioned how WJLA and WTTG in DC are preparing to test the system out over 60 days before officially launching. The new technology is designed to hand stations more power, flexibility, and streamline ability over content dispersion and, of course, monetization potential. An example of the optimization is Sinclair creating templates that will be embedded with relevant information/media that viewers can get/watch directly. The content will also be bolstered by geo-targeting so that area-relevant emergency alerts could run as a bug or crawl on screens just to those in affected areas.

  4. Sinclair had four months to rebrand the RSNs as MLB is now underway and NBA & NHL comeback next weekend. I wonder whether a rebrand is in the works or if the pandemic delayed any action on Sinclair's part. Also, Sinclair could've used the time to negotiate new deals with MPVDs who've dropped them in recent years.

  5. Speaking of KPNX/KTAR, I don't think this 1970 promotional film featuring weatherman Frank Peddie has been ever posted in this thread; it provides a few interesting behind-the-scenes glimpses of the station half a century ago:

  6. As I'd "threatened" in the non-news Classic Video thread, I've been in the process of pulling clips from tapes in the past few days and will continue to do so for the near term. Not a ton of news-related content to date, but I do have a couple of things to share from KTRK. The tease and intro to Live at Five, circa November 1989 at the tail end of the Bob Boudreaux-anchored era. He moved to weekends several months after this was recorded. The open had been updated several months prior to include Joe Diaz while Ed Brandon was in rehab, and this was an exceptionally brief period where the closed-captioning logo appeared before the station ID in the open. And just about a year prior (October 1988) there's this... A group of elementary school students, primarily from East and Southeast Houston, form the Challenger Children's Choir and sing the revamped Frank Gari image campaign that aired on the station at the time - "Houston's Coming Back". My previous channel had a :30 version featuring the anchors, and I had seen another 1:00 version uploaded in the past (perhaps by @compubit?) featuring clips from the Space Shuttle Discovery "Return to Flight" launch that occurred in September 1988. I've found the original version on one of my tapes from early that month that tends to fit the lyrics better and will post it when I get a chance.

  7. Some new developments in Phoenix, AZ. Last week, on July 8, Scripps' KASW (CW) became the second transmission source for the ATSC 3.0 signal. The station will host the signal for KSAZ (Fox 10 / O&O) as well for its initial launch. Earlier reports last October sort of mentioned KNXV (Scripps' ABC 15; probably just discussed because of their shared ownership) in the developments, but the launch is set to eventually happen for the whole market. After Portland, OR's full launch following July sweeps, six more markets are slated to launch in August, and another five after November sweeps. These are all contingent on operations not being too derailed by COVID.

  8. I guess no one should be surprised, but Tim Fleischer is finally retiring after 35 years at Eyewitness News. He is being celebrated at 5 pm tomorrow. I have attached the news article from Pittsburgh when he was hired away. Going to miss Tim. This basically has been his reporting staff for a long time.
