  1. It's shrinking but the audience is going elsewhere, that's why the media companies are investing on the free apps (CBSN, ABC News Live, etc..), that's how I'm getting my news these days since cord cutting. It's sorta neat to watch WABC or WPIX live from San Diego on my big television screen, same thing about watching ABC World News Now live at 10pm Pacific Standard Time. These companies need to embrace the future or else they will fail. I hope Nextstar brings their stations up on these free apps, would live to see KTLA on the big screen. As for CBS Evening News, I'm in the same bandwagon with those who wished Jeff Glor was given more time to make the show his own, he was on his way there when CBS leadership decided they wanted change. The costly Norah experiment didn't work and won't work, the move to Washington D.C. seems very pointless. For me, it doesn't seem like the brand means much to CBS, just look how they gave up on the weekends and replaced it with a very low budget production. I'm very curious if the merge with Viacom will change things again for their evening format. Like someone said earlier, the evening new format ain't dying, ABC World News is the most watched show currently. People are tuning in and ABC News has proven to have gotten the formula right in terms of content and talent that the audience appreciates.

  2. As a Chicagoan who was used to local games on WGN Sports where they didn't use sideline reporters, I was fine with it. When they needed to interview someone, they would have a producer and a camera operator slap a headset/mic on a player or coach, and the play-by-play commentator would interview them from the booth. The teams all split games between WGN and NBC Sports Chicago. When I would tune into their games on NBCSC, I would always find the addition of the sideline reporter (plus the "insider" and sometimes the extra "field commentator") to be extra fluff. I actually preferred the "less is more" approach of the WGN telecasts. At the national level, the NFL on CBS didn't use sideline reporters for a number of years. Their coverage seemed to do just fine. For injuries, I assume they would have a producer gather the information from the locker rooms/training staff and would feed it to the play-by-play commentator to relay it to the audience whenever needed.

  3. Norah just isn’t the right fit as anchor of CEN. And if anyone has any common sense at CBS, they should give Jeff another shot at it in 2024 (if he hasn’t left by then). With all due respect, I have no clue where you’re getting your #s from. People have been talking about the imminent death of broadcast network news for years. They aren’t going anywhere.

  4. No. Katie was 100x times better and, by the end of her run at CBS, was putting on a solid program. Bob Schieffer, in my opinion, was the best Evening News anchor. ABC World News Tonight has been the #1 show on all of television for over two months and is having its most watched season in 17 years.

  6. C'mon, be better. 1. His name is Dave, and 2. It's summer. He's just taking some time off. 5 days off-air isn't enough to file a missing person report.

  7. Not to mention the guys who run that are straight up jerks! Before I got let go due to "Newsroom Restructuring", this email was sent to us from a former reporter in Alaska.

  8. Like what's happened in other outlets/newsrooms elsewhere in recent weeks, there seems to be a growing uproar against management at Fox 29; in this case, it's been described as "toxic, super-white, and Trump-apologizing." Some background: 1) https://www.phillymag.com/news/2020/07/13/ken-rothweiler-fox-29-firing-black-lives-matter/ https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2020/7/14/gone-in-philly-for-being-pro-blm July 13: Former Fox 29 Legal Analyst Ken Rothweiler, who had been at the station since 2009, alleged news director Jim Driscoll reprimanded and later fired him for being "too pro-BLM"/"too anti-cop" on his social media. Driscoll is alleged to have surveil Rothweiler's comments more closely in recent years. The tension reportedly erupted after Rothweiler sent an email to former colleagues discussing the nature of his firing, after which a fiery back-and-forth ensued. 2) https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2020/7/17/philly-we-have-a-problem July 17: An update from the previous development -- Rothweiler reportedly sent a letter to GM Dennis Bianchi with legal concerns after hearing stories of similar experiences. 3) https://www.phillymag.com/news/2020/07/21/fox-29-philadelphia-fox-news-conservative/ July 21: The Philly Mag 'exposé,' if you will, of the station was published, written by Ernest Owens. Former on-air talent (specifically a male anchor from 2013-2016; I think I know who, but won't name him if he's not named here) claimed management was "extremely white, conservative, and everything wrong you would expect from such leadership overseeing news coverage in a diverse city." Some of the incidents listed include the Lauren Johnson n-word incident, the infamous Burlington incident, and microaggressions such as when Sheinelle Jones "[sounded] 'too proud' when saying President Obama’s name on-air." Additionally, Driscoll reportedly put his "right-wing slant" on Trump-related headlines posted on the website for the station's stories and on social media. My thoughts? If anything, the allegations make the station sound like a tumultuous place to be working at, and even if you might have agreed/sided with management's reported opinions/proclivities, it still sounds a lot like walking on eggshells. Owens acknowledges that the station has more diversity in its on-air talent overall, but the conclusions are that the management seems to be the root of the problem. Driscoll has been with FTS since 2001 when it acquired WWOR and joined WTXF in 2012, the same year Bianchi joined as GM from WCAU. Rothweiler has threatened to possibly sue (allegedly, as reported in the first FTVLive link) but in the end, will any of this make an impact at Fox 29/raise eyebrows at FTS?
