  1. Another newscast from WAVY-TV's archive; this time from October 4, 1983

Okay, hearing the bumper/close music in the clear proves to me that WAVY 1982 = Tuesday2. As if KGTV just so happening to use it at the same time wasn't enough evidence...

I just remember I had this... I pulled it from an old Harborfest newscast WAVY had on their website a few years ago. This is a longer sample of the bumper theme that sounds like "Tuesday2" (it probably is)

  2. I have a longer cut but don't know who composed it:

You're definitely looking in the right places. I know WAVY has used Megatrax throughout much of the 2000's and assume it's their current production music. Before that was Firstcom. Preceding Firstcom I believe they used Network.

To me the production track sounds like it has that "90s FirstCom" vibe, particularly with the string instrumentation.

Found it... I was fairly certain it was Firstcom. It's called "Going Global" in their PowerPlay archive.

  3. KING in 1997:

From the same channel... KOMO weather promo from 1997:

Anyone know what the production music track in that is called? I want to say it's Firstcom or Network Music; I found it online a while back, but the name slips my mind. I remember WAVY using the longer version of it on their midday news as a headline bed years ago.

  4. Noticed around the 2:20 mark that the Chyron under Leanne Rains' name read "WAVY News 10"; so it looks like the station was phasing out the Daily News branding around this time (still used the Daily News in the intro)

It's verbally mentioned as "WAVY News 10" too.

From the aforementioned 1989 special, they had the new logo on the building when they moved into it in April of that year. They didn't start using it on-air until September.

  5. Noticed WAVY-TV's YouTube page has its own archive section (most of the footage so far has been raw Chopper 10 shots from the first few years that was used); but I did see a couple of specials they did also included.

WAVY has an incredibly extensive archive. During their 50th anniversary in 2007, they posted a 30-minute special from 1989 about the history of the station and move to their new building on their website.

Here are two newscasts from 1998... 11pm from January and 5pm from March (before and after the set change on Super Bowl Sunday)

  6. I have another find.

When the WTKR noon "Discover the Land of the 3" open appeared in the Internet Archive a while back, I was instantly reminded of a theme from one of its then-sister stations: the WPRI 1986 "Right at Home" theme. I knew that Discover the Land was a Klein & piece, but we didn't have composer information for Right at Home.

It does appear in the Copyright Office records with a date of 1986. It was registered by Alpenstock Productions, Inc., and the authors on the application are Robert A. Klein and Rick Krizman (who did the KRON "24 Hour News" theme).

Interesting info. I brought the similarity between the WTKR and WPRI themes to Mr. NMSA's attention a few years ago, and he could confirm the "Discover" and "Right at Home" image songs were both Klein &, but not the WPRI theme.

    I have a

with the "Discover" theme I found long before that open surfaced. I originally thought it was the same as WPRI 1986, given their shared ownership and sound.
  7. I'm beginning to suspect there may be multiple versions of "WNDU 1991" (WSOC 1985), with one produced as late as 1993. All the additions would have been made by WSOC.

Yeah, I think that makes sense. As you implied, WSOC seems to have been the client for the whole thing. I've already basically confirmed from Hal Brown that the WNDU 1991 package was done by VTS (having licensed the rights to the music), and he seemed to confirm to me that it was done for WSOC?

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but...

    Take a look at this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb7IVxYjboM

That sounds like VTS's "The Team to Watch" in the teaser. Maybe that's what the WSOC 1986 theme actually is?

  8. It's waaaaay too early for the Olympics logo to be tagged on anything.. The fact that NBC's been promoting the hell out of it since the start of the football season bothers me.

When does that usually start on the network side (logo bug)? Right after the new year?

  9. This is what Image VII is based off of and was also used by WSET in the early 90s: "This is Virginia, so many sights to see, with friends that you can count on at WSET." I have it stored on a hard drive somewhere. Theirs wasn't nearly as polished as KCNC's.

In fact, Image IX, X, Spirit News and the 1987 update to Image IV are also based off the theme.

  10. I don't know if this was posted before but here's a really nice promo campaign from KCNC from 1988. Probably one of the best if not THE best promo campaigns ever.

  11. Unfortunately there's no sign of whatever theme they might have been using regularly at the time...

Pretty sure they were using the WSLS 1988 theme at the time, but the theme from the WBMG sample on the NMSA. Back when Charles Fishburne returned to anchor a newscast during their 60th anniversary celebration several years back, they played a snippet of the news open in the mid-80s.

  12. I recently came across a rare clip from WSLS-TV. This is from 1986, and features a tease for "The News Tonight" with Ken Surpan and Monica Shuman. The theme you hear in this clip is Tuesday13 from Tuesday Productions which was also used on WDEF, KCCI and others.

Interesting because the NMSA lists WSET as using that theme.

They also list WNCT as using it too (not sure when that was added, I must not pay attention as well as I used to!). Must have been a Park thing?

  13.

Also noticed in the video you linked to that about 30 minutes in; someone accidentally slapped a Proud N peacock just before the sign-off.

In this 1984 signoff, the script is nearly identical but with a different voiceover.

Bad tape quality so I can't see what NBC logo is used. I'm assuming it's the same Proud N peacock.

My guess is it was originally produced around 79/80 with the Proud N peacock, and they updated the station logo and voiceover every few years but kept everything else the same.

  14. Late rebroadcast of WAVY 11pm Saturday night news from October 1987:

Includes a version of the "You're Covered" promo and the station signoff at the conclusion of the rebroadcast. Also, what was up with the abundance of fuel company ads in the late 80s?
