1. Adam & Cecily have been doing live behind the scenes videos on Facebook. Just watched one now. It was really cool! Cecily did it from her page but Chris Sowers (who is working during the week????) took over for a bit and actually showed Cecily and Adam on the video feed while they were live on the air! Neat concept!

He's also the weather producer so he's probably driving graphics behind the scenes.

  2. Question: how come in Philadelphia they always talk about Action News having the oldest and most respected talent. However NBC10 is second and I'm pretty sure only Glenn Schwartz, Vai Sikahema, and Bill Henley have been there a long time. CBS3 has older talent like Ukee Washington, Walt Hunter, Natasha Brown, and Lesley Van Arsdall. How come they're not close to 10?

10 does hard news. 3 does entirely too much fluff to be taken seriously these days. In fact 3 reminds me a lot of 10 bad in the dark days of the Jeff Zucker/John Wallace reign of terror at NBC. They tried to do this "hyperlocal", positive, feature oriented product and no one tuned in to watch.

  3. Being that 3 is trying to promote itself as the optimistic alternative to the other stations in town (translation: don't look for much hard news there), it doesn't surprise me that they wouldn't mind turning the morning show into a giggle fest. This new thing they're going to try with Nicole Brewer smacks of just that. They're going to end up in 4th place if they keep this up. These light, feature heavy news formats just don't work in this town and every station here that's tried it has tanked as a result of it.

  4. Noticed some key personalities have had off for a day or two this week. I wonder if it's an "early" weekend in anticipation of having to work all day Saturday (as in wall-to-wall coverage).

Most likely. They gave both Bill Henley and Glenn Schwartz off yesterday. You figure Saturday is going to be an all hands on deck sort of day.

  5. They also have this, by the way. Maybe it's for the parking lot on "First Alert Weather Days".

That's at the Blue Cross Riverrink at Penns Landing. They are the media partner of the Riverfront Corporation.

  6. They're fully loaded on the weekends. Justin Drabick and Lauren Casey already fill that role. If they carve out a role for a fifth meteorologist, I imagine it'll be noon and 6pm.

Forgot about Lauren. Maybe either Kyla or Justin fills Kate's old role doing the Noon and splitting the 5PM.

  7. A little odd. Jim and Jaqueline anchored the 4pm together, but Keith is anchoring solo at 5pm.

Minor Update: Jacqueline is co-anchoring at 6pm with Jim.

Could this mean a new hire or some shuffling is coming, especially with Chris leaving?

Rosemary has been anchoring with Keith all week. Dunno what's up.

  8. Would anybody rate WCAU 10's coverage of the pope, last among Philly news stations because of this issue or because of the way they handled the coverage?

They were and still are hamstrung by the strike.

  9. Let's also not forget, back at 6 & 11 in the early-to mid 2000's, Action News was pretty close to getting beat when Larry Mendte was at CBS3 and NBC10. Also, if Jim Gardner asked for too much money, I know ABC-Disney would let him go in a heartbeat. He really means nothing to management.

That's a bit harsh. I know for a fact from people I've talked to that their GM loves Jim and will have him there as long as he wants to keep working. I can't speak for anyone above him at ABC but I'm sure you're assessment is accurate when it comes to them just given how little they want to have to do with their stations.

  10. But has anybody dethroned Action News in all newscasts in a certain time frame? NO. Action News has won the Philly news ratings for 40 years. That's not changing anytime soon. Besides, I love their station, Jim Gardner, MCTYW and their news van again!

That's until their viewership ages out, then everything you fanboy about will have to change or they'll get left in the dust. Their basic presentation hasn't really changed much in that time span. Yeah it's gotten a modern polish over time but yeah you have the same basic principles in place for the past 40 years but if you really watch closely, what really separates them from everyone else, is that unique time locked presentation paired with talent with familiar faces. Their newsgathering and story telling isn't much different than 10's. They pretty much just have precedence on their side.

  11. Let's be honest... NOBODY and I mean... NOBODY is going to have a chance of dethroning Action News anytime soon. As long as...

    1) Jim Gardner is still there.

    2) Action News is still... Action News.

    3) The MCTYW theme is still playing.

Then there will be no dethroning from WPVI 6, anytime soon. I just don't see that happening.

Never say never. It's already happened before.

  12. It's a pile of crap because they brought the replacement photographers in a week before the Papal Visit when the union made their strike vote in the first place. That would have given thfem plenty of time to screen and credential anyone that was going to be working the festivities. They're reaching at this point.

Also anyone who lives in this region knows this is par for the course the kind of tactics that their union boss John Dougherty pulls all the time. He's going to lead a bunch of his rank and file to pink slips if this keeps up

  13. Are the strikers following WCAU live trucks out to the shots or are they finding out locations from the radio (assuming WCAU still uses radios)?

Have any WWSI live shots been interrupted?

That's probably how they're doing it. Intercepting radio communications. Last I checked they still used radios to communicate with reporters.
