  1. Looks like something is up studio wise. They've got a temporary setup in the streetside studio (the former 10! Show studio) they've been using since 11AM this morning. I can't see them getting a completely new set since they're moving downtown in 3 years but their current set had been around since 2008 and it could use a refresh to hold them over til '17.

  2.

I remember the old baron systems did that - hell WJZ's does (it looks like they up convert their radar to HD despite running Accuweather).

As for the power of the radar it is most likely the ERP which takes into account of the gains of the antenna. Wikipedia uses an example that a 100kW radio station would typically only use 10-20kW of power.

6 uses Barons for their live radar so there's that.

Could someone explain to me why when I see their weather forecast when they show the Doppler radar there are two beams rotating different speeds from the same radar site? Correct me if I'm wrong but dual polarization radar "scans" the horizontal and vertical resolution at the same time from the same radome at the same speed.

I realize that double scan is their marketing term that refers to nothing in particular but those two radar beams also move way to fast considering the average radars on the market (including private manufactures, NEXRAD and the TDWR) take 5 minutes to do a full 360° rotating

That double beam on their radar is not the actual radar beam. It's an animation overlayed on to the map. They do go to the actual live radar when there something they need to show and you can see the actual radar beam and it's more in tune with a regular 5 min sweep.

They have five mets, really - they dropped the "AccuWeather team" bit and strictly refer to Karen Rogers as traffic nowadays.

I don't think the first choice is WABC, because they do use Cecily and Adam pretty heavily if there's a big weather story. They're also more telegenic (IMO) than most of the WABC staff. (I'd argue Amy Freeze as the big exception, of course.)

Karen while she is the morning traffic reporter is still part of the weather team (and a meteorologist). They still include her in weather promos and when Murphy or someone on the weekends is off she usually the one who fills in for them.

Ah the power of VizRT, WSI and a properly coded rundown.

There is a reason why graphic creators oftentimes make a style guide with each revision - it's so that the local office doesn't f..k it up. If you want a look at how not to use Look F you have to go to Las Vegas's NBC Affiliate KSNV (look at their lower thirds they use a serif font and have to hastily rotating peacocks one of which is upside down).

Thing is is though for this current look, 95% of it was done in-house. 6 contracted a firm to do the logo, the end of the open and the base elements of the look. They did everything else themselves.

Yeah, too much going on, too many changes, particularly ones that don't make sense. Just give Vai and Tracy the entire 4-7am shift. As for the 11am, they should give it two anchors and stop rotating it! Either give it to Keith & Renee, or Vai & Tracy. Keep Chris on the weekends!!

    The 11AM is Renee's

  7. Surprised there hasn't been one made yet so here we go with its first post.

The Daily News is reporting that WCAU is shaking up the morning show...again and going with three anchors spread out over the 3 hour show. Chris Cato joins the cast and solos from 4-4:30AM then Tracy Davidson joins him at 4:30 and they pair up from 4:30-5:30. Vai Sikahema then comes in for Cato and does the remaining 90 mins with Tracy. I wonder if there will be different feels to the show with the varying personnel.

All that said - is it me or is there trouble with the 4?

10 has chosen that newscast as the one to mount its strongest attack. For the better part of the year, they've run full 22-minute news blocks to start the broadcast, and they now squeeze Ellen's credits to tease and start the newscast. 6 seems to be making panic moves such as shortening the open and downplaying the cutesy elements. And now, apparently, they do a newsbrief at 3pm, a three minute update that cuts into the beginning of Katie. Katie cannot be that much of an albatross for them.

10's 4 and 11 seem to be their hardest newscasts and it's not outlandish to say the 4 is the harder of the two esp in that 22 min A block. I get to watch the two 4PM shows side by side and you can almost literally see the shots being fired back and forth across City Line Av.
