  1. Another follow up on the Gil Tyree situation. His first day was today as advertised, but Joyce Peterson revealed they will be doing an atypical anchor lineup. Gil Tyree will anchor Wed - Sun. Andy Burrell will anchor Mondays and Tuesdays, then report Fri - Sun. Essentially they want to emphasize sports for the weekend since that's when many major events happen anyway. Doc Holliday will apparently go back to news reporting though I imagine will be the primary fill-in for either one.

It is an atypical setup, and something WTVF in Nashville did as well to some extent following the retirement of Hope Hines. Not sure if they still do that type of arrangement.

Also, according to a press release on the LocalMemphis page (http://www.localmemphis.com/content/newstation/story/TV-Stations-Welcome-New-Talent-to-Local-Sports/qg0WzyQ-2USvw_3vH0JKsA.cspx), Doc will have a dual role as both a general assignment and sports reporter for the stations, which is also not unusual as WHBQ did that with Marcus Hunter and Kristin Tallent in the past.

Also as revealed last month, the new sports department is expected to begin producing special programming in the future as well. Speculating but maybe a Sunday night show will be in the works.

That should be interesting considering the fact that WREG no longer does a sports show on Sundays (they used to have one that was hosted by George Lapides, who does a morning sports show on WHBQ-AM), WMC dropped their show to do an hour-long newscast on Sunday nights, and both stations do abbreviated 10pm newscasts on Friday nights (dedicating the rest of the half hour to an extended sports segment).

  2. Former WREG news anchor Pam McKelvy is returning to Memphis television after an 8 year absence, most of which was spent being a full-time mother. McKelvy will officially begin work today as the new 4pm co-anchor at rival station, WMC-TV, alongside Jarvis Greer. Former 4pm co-anchor, Lindsey Brown, was recently moved to the weekday morning shift a few weeks back, where she now shares co-anchor duties with Kym Clark and Andrew Douglas.

  3. Some more sad news to report - this time from the Fox station in Memphis. Longtime WHBQ-TV anchor Ed Craig passed away early Monday morning at the age of 80 after complications with COPD. Craig started his broadcasting career in radio in the 1950s before joining the station in the 60s as a reporter as well as its first weatherman. Eventually, he became one of WHBQ's news anchors during the 70s and 80s until his retirement in 1990.

We at TVNT give our condolences to the WHBQ-TV family, both past and present, as well as to Craig's family in their time of mourning.

  4. The Palmer package is still in use — and it's 27 years old this year. WJET dropped it last year, making it a race between KESQ Palm Springs et al. and WPTY Memphis et al. to see who will drop it first.

For the record, WPTY stopped using PNP early last year. They have since decided to use no music at all for their newscasts.

  5. Here we go again...

A few weeks after WHBQ's "big announcement" which ended up being anchor switches at several of its newscasts, two Memphis stations are touting big announcements about one of their main personalities tonight at 10. At WMC, its Dave Brown, and at WREG, Claudia Barr. Both could conceivably be about pending retirement, especially Dave Brown who's been on Memphis TV for nearly 40 years, but will have to again play skeptic given we're at the end of sweeps and 3/5 are very very close in the 10 PM ratings so far this month. Both have gotten a good amount of buzz on social media today like WHBQ had with theirs.

I saw both "big announcements", and both of them were disappointments with one of them was just another sweeps gimmick.

Dave Brown, who has been in broadcasting for 50 years, will be sticking around at WMC-TV for at least a couple more years even though he's close to retirement age as was mentioned on air, so that was a bummer way to end an otherwise nice tribute to him. WREG, on the other hand, announced a shopping spree at a luxury retailer as the last part of their Prize Box promotion, and included Claudia Barr "showing off" a pair of black Christian Louboutin heels with her hands.

I got nothing else to say. :bang:

  6. Didn't want to create a new thread for this but wanted to note WHBQ's interesting campaign the past two weeks touting a "major" announcement they are supposedly making tomorrow on Good Morning Memphis. Don't know what it is, and it will almost surely be underwhelming, but their method of promotions for it has been rather creative and does have a lot of people talking, especially on social media. They've been running numerous promos both on-air and through social media, and have been using a TMZ-style format with the actual TMZ staff doing intros to fake segments with "paparazzi" bombarding Fox 13 staff with questions about the impending announcement.

Its generated a fair amount of buzz on social media, especially today with a lot of people guessing what the announcement will be, from staff changes to location changes and various other wild and humorous speculation. Like said, I'm guessing this "major" change will be no big deal at all, but it has accomplished its objective it seems, just in time for the start of sweeps tomorrow. If its something truly major, I'll report back.

As it turns out, the big announcement was a major anchor shakeup at WHBQ with the return of Ernie Freeman and the addition of Joey Sulipeck to mornings alongside Valerie Calhoun from 6 to 10AM. Lauren Johnson, Jason Carter (who recently returned to Memphis), and Ed Echols will be doing mornings from 4:30 to 6AM. Greg Coy has been moved to evenings at 5:00 alongside Mearl Purvis (who will still be doing the 5:00 & 9:00 shows), with Darrell Greene now doing the 9:00 & 10:00 newscasts (replacing Freeman). Meteorologist Brian Basham will replace Sulipeck on the nightside shows. Don't know if there will be any changes to the midday newscast.

EDIT: No changes were made to the midday newscasts (it only competes with WPTY during the 11:00 hour).

  7. WKRN-TV in Nashville is reviving its weekend morning newscasts beginning this Saturday (10/8) with Lauren Murphy, who was recently a reporter at KVVU-TV in Las Vegas, anchoring the new program. The last time WKRN had morning news on the weekends was in 2004, only to be cancelled a few years later. Hopefully their second try will be better than the first one.

EDIT: The new weekend morning newscasts on WKRN have apparently been pushed back to next weekend (10/15), likely in tandem with the launch of HD newscasts in the coming week at the station.

  8. More news from Nashville:

WSMV has hired KGUN's Ian Reitz as the new co-anchor for Channel 4 News Today alongside Holly Thompson.

    http://www.wsmv.com/story/15422513

He will be replacing Aaron Solomon, who left the station a few months ago (he now hosts a local sports radio show on WPRT-FM). WSMV reporter Josh Devine has been filling in as co-anchor since then. Reitz will officially take over early next month.

  9. Just a heads up from Nashville:

Per their Facebook page, WSMV has posted pictures of their new set, and based on the control room images, they will also be getting the NBC Look C treatment (along with a tweaked logo). Expect a full blown launch of their new look in the coming days.

  10. News from Memphis, TN:

WMC-TV will be starting a new 4pm newscast beginning August 22nd (replacing Oprah, which has since ended). Lindsey Brown (from WTOK in Meridian, MS) and Jarvis Greer will be anchoring, and John Bryant will be doing the weather. This is the first time that Greer, who is also the station's sports director, will actually be anchoring a news program, but it's likely that he'll still be doing sports highlights for the 6pm and 10pm news in addition to his new role at WMC-TV.
