  1. A couple of stories from the Memphis market:

    - WMC-TV weekend meteorologist Tim Van Horn has left the station to become a full-time real estate agent for Crye-Leike. His final day on the job was this past Sunday (http://blog.memphisdailynews.com/?p=33694).

    - Cox Media Group has appointed former WOOD-TV news director Patti McGettigan to the same position at WHBQ-TV (http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/82144/patti-mcgettigan-new-whbq-news-director).

  2.

GM John Koski and ND Ken Jobe are gone from WHBQ. Cox wants to bring in their own people (of course)...

A follow up per the Memphis Daily News:

Cox Media Group has tapped Paul Briggs, an 18-year veteran of the media company, to be the new vice president and general manager at Fox 13. He comes to the station from Charlotte, N.C., where he was the general sales manager at WSOC-TV.

He’s also worked as general sales manager at Charlotte’s WAXN-TV and as an account executive at WSOC-TV. Briggs replaces John Koski.

Meanwhile, Cox’s executive vice president of television, Jane Williams, told The Daily News the company also is looking for a news director to succeed Ken Jobe at the Memphis station.

In a statement about Briggs’ new role, Williams said: “We are thrilled that we can tap such phenomenal internal talent like Paul for this important leadership position at one of our newest TV brands.”

  3. Not sure when this happened, but WATN sports anchor/reporter Marcus "Doc" Holiday was recently promoted to sports director at the station, replacing Jamie Griffin, who is now a sports writer for the Memphis Flyer.

  4.

As for KDNL, they have to be making some kind of profit. As bush-league as they are, and what little effort they put into themselves, they're still there and ABC hasn't been wooed elsewhere. Now if it were a CBS of a FOX station, KDNL or KTVI would have certainly snatched up the affiliation by now.

I'm guessing Sinclair had to sell a lot of ad time to keep KDNL afloat despite not having a news operation.

  5. WSMV morning anchor Ian Reitz will be leaving the station at the end of this week. He was recently hired to become the new morning anchor at WTSP in Tampa/St Petersburg, replacing Joe Gumm.

  6.

WMC Weather Team lineup beginning sometime next month, officially announced today:

Ron Childers - bumped to Chief Meteorologist, weeknights at 5:00 and 10:00

Dave Brown - weeknights at 6 until sometime next year when he will retire

Spencer Denton (new from WAAY) - weekdays at noon and 4pm

Andrew Kozak (new from KTUL) - weekday mornings

    Tim Van Horn - weekends

    Bailey Melton - fill-in

John Bryant left the team early this year and is currently training at WATN.

That should make severe weather coverage all the more interesting, especially if they have all 4-5 at hand plus Melton if needed.

  7.

In an unexpected move, former WMC meteorologist John Bryant has joined WATN's weather team.

On a related note, WAAY chief meteorologist Spencer Denton is leaving the station to fill the role that John Bryant vacated at WMC. His last day at WAAY will be August 22.

Bryant hasn't been at WMC for months, so I'm guessing his non-compete clause was a short one with this move, and comes at the right time for WATN with both Lauren Raymer and Joy Lambert expected to go on maternity leave in the coming weeks.

I thought Bailey Melton was Bryant's replacement though. Does that mean Melton is gone too, or is WMC just adding another meteorologist to the four they already have?

  8.

Bert Case is working at WAPT.

I see. So by the time he does eventually retire, Bert Case will have worked on every TV station in the Jackson, MS market.

  9. WHBQ is expanding its morning newscasts to seven days a week. Beginning July 6th, Good Morning Memphis will air on Sundays from 6am-8am in addition to Saturdays. (I don't have a link, but commercials have started airing this week.)

  10.

If they do, please 'CNC, NO DATED, LATE 90s-LOOKING, UGLY "NBC36" logo. But, IIRC, Gannett stations don't use a "(Network)(Number)" branding, correct?

For the most part, yes. If a rebrand does happen, they should just go with either "WCNC News" and leave out the channel number, or go back to being just "News 36".

  11.

Haha that's actually pretty funny. Spurs are huge here and how dare you talk bad about them Heat fan ;)

While we're on the subject: KSAT and WPLG are making a friendly wager again. If the Spurs win the Finals, WPLG's morning anchors have to wear Spurs jerseys on the air and donate $500 to a San Antonio charity. If the Heat win (which they won't), then KSAT's morning anchors have to wear Heat jerseys on the air and donate $500 to a South Florida charity.

At least theirs is better than the lame ass wager made between the governors of New York and California over who wins the Stanley Cup Finals (NY Rangers vs LA Kings).

Speaking of which, Are WNBC and KNBC doing friendly wagers?

  12.

    Website predictions, anyone?

    WOI: CentralIowaMatters.com

    WHBF: QuadCitiesHomepage.net

    KCAU: SiouxlandHomepage.net

I was thinking it would be more like this:

WOI: IowaFirst.com (since Des Moines is the capital city and all)

    WHBF: 4theQuadCities.com or WeAreTheQuadCities.com

BTW, KCAU has their own Nexstar page up under the domain http://www.SiouxLandMatters.com.

Also, in terms of WOI and KCAU, how long before we see a statewide newscast along the lines of Arkansas Today?
