Im probably going to get some fallout from this post, but im going to go ahead anyway.. According to what I've read, there is basically a zero chance that these stations are going to be off the air if nothing is done. These stations collectively, are the most watched in the nation and highest rated stations in arguably this part of the world. They've set the standard and culturally defined how we watched local news today. So I respectfully do not understand their unnecessary inflammatory drama to confuse the public. Honestly this is the issue, all of this public alarmist method of communication these days is what is strengthening the division and clash. Respectfully, they are entitled to voice their concerns for sure, but is it really that serious enough? Can someone help me understand what their intent is behind all of this?

Bill's first report post the anchor desk in his new role. He's already hitting the ground running with this. Glad to see him remain present in some capacity. He talks to Maria Shriver about her father's battle with the devastating disease.

Yeah that old KABC/KGO 7 logo could've been a fluke or a technical issue, or something they quickly needed to edit in, also if you notice the font and even the colors doesn't match its a weird font and the circle 7 is weirdly stretched so thats definitely not a permanent thing.

I watched the 2003 clip. Still having a hard time coming to terms with this revelation, still feels like it was just too soon for his departure. Hard to believe that broadcast was 23 years ago! Unbelievable how the time flies. Bill Beutel also really had an amazing voice as well didn't realize that he could sing too! Brilliant human being he was. Anyway may he continue to rest in peace, and now Bill Ritter, today leaves his own legacy behind. Its uncanny how he literally followed the footsteps of his namesake predecessor. He too will be so incredibly missed. I could see Liz being the solo anchor for now, but logically it makes sense to either put Mark Marza there, or maybe Bill himself could appoint someone to replace him so we'll see how the decision plays out, but I think for the summer we can see some rotating anchors at least till the Fall.

Liz Cho is anchoring solo tonight by the way for the 6pm. A teary Liz acknowledged Bill's departure today and she emphasized on how he will move on to a new role of doing reporting on Alzheimers from this point on. So tough to watch. . At least he will still be there with them for the time being as long as he's able to.

Its a remarkably repeated history, full circle 1999 analog moment in both respects.

I just have to say its a bit heartbreaking and bittersweet to witness this moment. That moment when Bill Ritter decidedly left his post which such honor and dignity. Its a testament to who he is. He seems to be quite a remarkable human outside of the broadcasting space. He is well respected as we saw other outlets like WCBS, and others taking the time to mention this just is a testament to the amazing human he is. Bill has had some tough shoes to fill when his namesake, Bill Beutel left the job to him 27 years ago. He did just that to the best of his ability. He did what he set out to do 27 years ago and now it is time for him to pass this baton along to the new generation as we were eluding to. He gave it his all. Bill is a very special person for New Yorkers. His voice and his personality really was compelling. His reassurance with his warmth and personality, humility and dignity is not something we come across often in this industry and he had no shame in displaying that over the years. It made us feel like everything was going to be okay in the end with his delivery of the story. He is really pure and as wholesome as one can be and had such gravitas which I don't think anyone else has quite just yet its something that takes time to build and he certainly did that during his tenure at WABC. He truly upheld the high standard that his predecessor Bill Beutel (may he continue to rest in peace) passed on to Bill Ritter who he too now is passing on to the next. He's shown his vulnerability to us and is now seated with the other legends that we all knew and love. But for Bill its a little heartbreaking for me to see this because it kinda feels like he departed a little too soon. He certainly had a lot more to give and thats where it feels a bit sad for me. Over the years as a child and to this day as a near middle aged adult. Channel 7 was always on in the background, my parents would turn the channel it was a definitive part of my early life, and to this day I've always been a loyal viewer, the voices of these legends are etched in my memory and will always be forever. I've always knew that I was lucky to witness the professionalism this station continues to uphold the diversity and the professionalism of the individuals that work there it is a snapshot of what New York is at its best the diversity and the melting pot of different backgrounds coming together to deliver a product so profound which is why they continue to be the most watched station in the nation. WABC created a standard that help shaped the rest of this country and possibly the world. It brought me to these forums to have these compelling discussions about how these stations work behind the scenes and I really truly mean that. Bill got us through some of our darkest times the unforgettable 9/11 attacks that changed our world today, the Blackout of 2003, Hurricane Sandy, COVID, these are the stories that shaped our city he delivered them with such grace. It is truly an end of an era as we know it with his departure, sure we will see other anchors and other personalities mold in the coming years but we will never quite see anyone like him again, he will be extraordinarily missed. Im glad he's going to remain with us while he shares his journey with us and hopefully he gets some more years to spend with his family and his beloved people in his life. Thank You Bill!

Absolutely 100%, Roger and Bill, they are legendary and they are the pioneers that defined and set the standard of that we know today so they will always have that distinction that nobody will ever be able to come close because they are associated with the creation of this highly successful format that Al Primo introduced and now used all across the country. But, to elaborate more, Bill Ritter, Roz Abrams, Diana Williams, Ernie Anastos, etc. are a part of the immediate generation that followed on the footsteps of these greats and they were task with maintaining and upholding the standard that Bill and Roger created and to this day has worked. So now we are at a point in time where they are now passing the baton down to the newer Generations, (Generation X and Millennials) up into their place which is what I meant by end of an era. So just a sign of the times really.

Aw, was hoping he'd stay till 80 like Chuck on WNBC, I grew up with Bill, he is the face of WABC, when he retires it will be truly an end of an era.

What happened? Did he say something out of script during a recent newscast or is this just a general observation?

You know come to think of it now, the studio lighting for WABC has always been on the dimmer side comparatively to other stations. Even with their previous studios at the former 7 Lincoln Square building which is now completely gone and demolished (as we've discussed earlier) sadly only in our memories now.. the lighting was also like that. I almost wonder now if the set lighting being dimmer is intentional, maybe they don't want it to be too distracting for the anchors. And yes I remember all too well that day, when the First at 4pm broadcast debut, they were so young! Haha as we all were. ;p. On a side note, its wild to see how their graphics at the time were quite beautiful even though their studio was not as nice. Almost as good as what we have today! Funny enough they were just months away from the debut of the Giant Octopus graphics which were also beautiful. They've come a long way, kudos to them for pioneering the 4pm broadcast here in New York! Can anyone identify specific key differences between the broadcasts in terms of tone and delivery? Is there a different tone for the 4pm, 5pm and 6pm? Here is how I note the differences: 4pm seems to be emphasize more on lifestyle and more entertainment, more light hearted. 5pm being more investigative and long form reporting a bit harder and the 6pm of course being the traditional hard delivery. Its also important to remind ourselves that that each newscast/show has its own dedicated staff. A lot of things behind the scenes that we don't know about its a lot more than just the people we see on camera haha.

A sign of the times that Bill's days with WABC are starting to be numbered. But its fair, he's 76 now.

Aw, she will be certainly missed. I will miss her for sure. I loved how graceful and warm she was with the forecasts. Her delivery of her forecasts always came from a place of humility. I wish her the best!

WABC, In my humble opinion, from an on air presentation (graphics and set) standpoint, I think we can all agree that they are comfortably "the best" just recently. KABC was always the better one for years and even today I think the KABC set is probably still a bit nicer than WABC's by a touch (they have the extra space that WABC doesn't have). The news product itself which is what ultimately matters has always been one of the most top notch local news productions in this entire country. They've always been prestigious at which all other local stations try to model. Both KABC and WABC stations do a near excellent job with that. And now we are starting to see both stations work kinda together on some stories which is kinda cute. For WABC, in terms of the on air graphics and set, I think that was a long journey for them. At this point the only criticism I have now for WABC and now KABC is I wish they used more of their news music package. I'd imagine they have full access to the entire suite of music. At this point, its probably safe to say that WABC is the best overall O&O ABC station now and now we are seeing the rest of the Circle 7 ABC O&O stations model them (Logo and Graphics etc..) A bit of history with WABC; from an on-air graphics and presentation perspective, they were always far behind the rest of the O&Os until this past year really. KABC always had the edge over the years. I would always envy KABC because of how they just excelled over WABC. It wasn't till probably around 2012 with the Giant Octopus graphics that their on air appearance represented what a flagship station should be but it was short lived, they literally took two steps back with those terribly looking flat graphics in 2016 which pretty much sucked in my opinion they were really boring and just lazily designed. We had to deal with that disaster for 8 years and finally they got their new graphics in 2024 followed by their new beautiful set in 2025 which KABC now modeled and has a slight edge over.

The Passing of the Legendary Anchorman Ernie Anastos
Vlad replied to IceManNYR's topic in New York News
A stark reminder of the fragility of life, just 2 weeks prior he was alive and well. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVcAtGYEhWJ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== His final message to the world couldn't be more fitting; "Now more than ever we need to promote and protect the truth! It's an obligation we all have. I'm still pretty sad he's no longer here.. . He was in such good spirits just two weeks before, definitely a tragic loss and gone too soon.
