WBRC now has SEVEN meteorologists!
tyrannical bastard replied to tyrannical bastard's topic in The Weather Lab
Birmingham is not too far from Huntsville, home of Baron Services, the other major supplier of broadcast weather systems next to IBM (WSI/WeatherCentral/The Weather Company). It was founded by meteorologist Bob Baron, who worked at WAAY and WAFF in the 80s and 90s. WBRC also uses Baron products including their VIPIR radar. WTVA has always punched above its weight for that market size. It's been a trailblazing station going all the way back to its founder, Frank Spain, who literally built the station by hand (the equipment) back in the early days of television. It's good to see Allen Media keeping the station above the pack. -

If Larry King was still with us, his infomercials would have higher ratings! -

That, and helping out their Gulf Coast stations (WJHG, WALA, WLOX, WVUE) if a tropical storm or hurricane were to strike, especially if one was knocked off the air. -
With the return of J-P Dice to WBRC, they will now have SEVEN meteorologists on staff. Likely the most out of any station in the southeast region. https://marketshare.tvnewscheck.com/2022/08/08/wbrc-birmingham-adds-familiar-face-increasing-meteorologists-to-7/ IMHO, they should have stayed at 6, it would matched their channel number. And lest we forget down at 33/40, where one reigns supreme over all...

Considering that KVVU did not start doing regular newscasts until 1998... that's a long way from the initial half-hour 10pm show they launched back then. Fox must have lit a fire under them to get a newscast going, because the way Vegas was growing, it was likely one of the largest markets without a Fox station airing news at the time.

That seems to be the new trend emerging at the news-intensive stations that don't have to deal with network programming at the time. WGN Chicago goes from 4am-1pm central. Any other station exceed that time, locally? Only 1 hour of that is devoted to lifestyle programming...Daytime Chicago, from 10-11. Might be a good time filler on some former superstation of theirs, but alas....

An update...the midday news will be at 11am-noon and Studio 10 will be 2 hours from 9-11am beginning on September 5th.

NewsNation The Turmoil Saga of NewsNation

Fun fact: Perry Sook and Matt Lauer both worked at WOWK in the 80s. Sook was an AE, and Lauer was a news producer. https://www.nexttv.com/news/sook-builds-broadcast-powerhouse-105694 Years later, Sook would own the station through Nexstar's purchase of Bray Cary's West Virginia Media. Maybe NewsNation is holding out for Bill O'Reilly too...maybe as a last ditch effort before pulling the plug? -

Million dollar idea here....to fill in the late night hours. Pillow Talk with Mike Lindell!!!! Not only does it give him a platform to spew his views to an interested audience, it's also the perfect opportunity to sell off all of those pillows that all of the other stores cancelled their orders of! You're welcome, Uncle Perry. This will be ratings gold!!!! -
NewsNation The Turmoil Saga of NewsNation

Meanwhile, Nexstar is still forcing their affiliates to have their footage credited as "NewsNation" when sent to their respective affiliate news services. Case in point, the deputy who was shot in Clark County, Ohio...the footage was likely shot by WDTN. Will it ever see the light of day on NewsNation itself? Or is it just another way to boost the ego of this "news" operation in it's futile quest for more viewers? -

...Or Nexstar is trying to kill off the network. After her disastrous stint on Megyn Kelly Today, all she has to do is say the wrong thing, and she can be the scapegoat...er...savior and WGN America will be back so fast, Bozo the Clown and Matlock reruns won't know what to do with themselves.... -
Man, that's sad. Jon Loufman is a fixture of Cleveland TV. I think he's been on every station (starting as a fill-in meteorologist) before getting permanent roles on WKYC and WOIO. He just comes off as a likeable person, so what's not to love about him?

WTOK (and the Meridian, MS market) is finally getting a midday newscast! Their only competition is WMDN/WGBC which only puts out a 6 and 10pm newscast, as well as a 9pm on WGBC's Fox station. All former Waypoint stations, so these are produced from afar. At least Coastal Television hasn't put their mark on these stations....yet.

Sooner or later, the golden goose of trying to make something out of WGN America is going to dry up. Once the OTT providers start dropping it, it's toast. Even worse is when a network that is FREE over the internet and gets roughly twice the viewers as NN (NewsMax)... I'd be shocked if Nexstar succeeds in getting the CW and trying to put NN's content there....then again, no I wouldn't. I'd be curious to see how the WFLANow content does. It does a much better job of covering the news than NewsNation does....sort of a low-budget HLN before they became the "murder porn" channel and home of endless Forensic Files marathons.... -

I see that WKYC finally came to their senses and brought back "news" on Saturday nights at 11pm. How long did the "Mike Polk Experiment" last before getting changed?- 3735 replies

In WALA's case, it's filling the two hours for the outgoing The Real at 10 and Nick Cannon at 11. Wasn't Judge Jerry cancelled as well? If they do two hours of Studio 10 and a 2 hour Midday newscast, that would be 8 1/2 hours of local news and programming. I know Gray is ramping up their local news and programming efforts, but this could be the most of any market in the country up to this point, and a sign of things to come for local TV as we know it...

WALA FOX 10 is expanding Studio 10 to TWO hours and adding a midday newscast this fall. Not sure if the midday news will be on at 11am or noon. Joe Emer announced this morning on Good Day Gulf Coast, and he will be moving to these new shows, bringing Eric Reynolds back to the program with Sarah Wall. Eric currently anchors the 4:30-7am portion. That's the first time I've seen a lifestyle program expand to 2 hours....has this happened anywhere else?

That's good to hear. I figured that a potential move to San Antonio would be overkill, especially since that operation handles their 3 stations and does news for Winston-Salem. Hopefully they were compensated well for the eminent domain to overtake their current facility.

Joce Sterman has jumped ship from Sinclair to Gray, where she'll be part of the "InvestigateTV" unit: https://www.investigatetv.com/page/meet-the-team/

It sounds like all of the Georgia stations they are launching will all be part of a network based out of the affiliate they are launching in Atlanta. So this may be the way that Gray is entering Macon without having their own full powered station in the market.

The Ever-Evolving Gray Graphics Situation...Thread
tyrannical bastard replied to NEOMatrix's topic in Graphics
The "honeycomb" look is probably the closest thing Gray has for a national package right now, only because it's the package they're using for their "Local News Live" channel that uses their stations' content to fill time on each other's streams. Outside of the Southeast, are there any other major clusters of stations that have picked it up? The only other two I can recall are Clarksburg and Harrisonburg...
