It does have a Gannett vibe to it. At the time, WKYC was an outlier as an O&O. WJW had beaten them to the punch by launching NewsCenter8 as much as the NBC stations were branded at the time, and had to resort to Action News, years before WOIO even existed. By the late 70s, the News Ticker theme had given way to Classical Gas/Streets Of, and in the Gannett-esque era, You've got a Friend. WKYC was such a farm team of a station back then, with people like Al Roker, Amanda Arnold, Tom Ryther, Wayland Boot, Doreen Gentzler, Dawn Stensland, Steve Browne, Terry Burhans, and later picking up second and third-winders like Doug Adair. Jeff Maynor, Dick Feagler, and Jim Mueller. Even in marketing, they resorted to a Klein& promo to promote themselves in 1979.

And whaddya know....it's been 40 years since Ted Turner signed on CNN. If he was still in charge, would you think he would have played "Nearer My God to Thee" by now? I hate to say this, but this image of what protestors/rioters did to the CNN center in Atlanta (and this logo) sums up exactly what Jeff Zucker has done to this network, and how his recklessness has helped this country get to where it is today. They had a great opportunity (and seized it) due to Tegna's GRAVE missteps with 11Alive (far beyond their atrocity of a logo, but with talent and format changes), but once again, squandered it to become the perpetual joke of Atlanta TV. Would some group or person PLEASE buy this station out of its misery?!?!?!?

I was expecting a much tougher sentence for Davis....but many of his counts had concurrent sentences. His probation goes much longer and if he violates it, it could mean more prison time. Let's just say that it's been a terrible few years for WBNS. The death of Chris Bradley, this, and one of America's few family owned stations succumbing to corporate ownership. That being said, if the Wolfe Family was aware of ANY doings while Davis was on the clock, there's blood on their hands too.

Going down now in Columbus, Ohio. Former WBNS Meteorologist Mike Davis is being sentenced for his child porn charges. ALL 3 stations, including WBNS are carrying it live. He was sentenced to at least 4 years in prison.

I think this COVID mess is far from over, and the way it's been handled by the government at ALL levels, (and the general population) a second wave is a certainty. That would mean more cases, deaths, and all of the economic calamity from the government trying to control it. Financially, if the lockdowns happen again, many companies are going to be in deep trouble, and we could see more cuts, layoffs, furloughs, and maybe a bankruptcy or two in the media sector. Companies like Meredith are going to have to decide if they have to sell off their PROFITABLE assets for a short-term surge, or if they need to dump the money-losing ones and go pure-play.

Oh the Speculatron entry HAD Tribune kept WGNX and still taken WPCH off of Time Warner's hands....can someone say "SuperStation"? What's taking Gray so long to put the Meredith group out of it's misery? It's one of the only almost perfect mergers left!!!!

Yet another reason Meredith needs to be bought out of its misery. This station has been cursed ever since Tribune traded them off and WGNX became WGCL.

Some news in the Mobile/Pensacola market... Lance Crawford has left WPMI to become the Director of Media Relations for the University of South Alabama. He worked two stints at WPMI as Sports Director, with a hiatus in the middle when he was released by Sinclair only to be re-hired back two years later (when his replacement didn't work out). He also worked at WALA in the 90s along with stints in Palm Springs, Medford, and Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia. And WALA reporter/fill in anchor Steve Alexander has been busted for DUI. CBS was finally beginning to gain some traction in the morning with Bill Kurtis, and it began to slip again after Diane Sawyer left the show. Even Meredith Viera was a contender, decades before she inherited the co-anchor slot on Today when Katie Couric left for CBS. Bottom line, it was a bad pairing to bring her on to the show (after a short trial and a 3 year deal), and it seemed to tank her trailblazing career up to that point. Bill Kurtis went back to Chicago to anchor at WBBM.

WATN needs it, BAD. It's half Nexstar with the other half being the Tegna look (with the COVID-19 scheme) I'm sure it's all because of the pandemic and Tegna had these ready to roll out to their stations. But it looks really weird and hacked together. Almost as bad as when Newport was schlepping through its final days as WPTY ABC 24 only for Nexstar to save the day by killing their former sister stations down in Little Rock (KLRT/KSAN and stealing their set, literally!)

Well crud, I'm finally getting the circle 3 logo on the WKYC.com website. It would probably be a disaster had it been introduced in the SD era....with the moire effect.

In WBRC's case, the "6" at the time drew from their longtime neon sign on top of Red Mountain...(hence the "on top of it all" slogan) It even translates to their current logo. At least this has history to draw on. As for WTSP, this what they REALLY looked like in 1979.

Could we be seeing a new package for their uber-dominant stations like WVUE and WBRC that still have the old package?

The whole TV-Sports thing has been bubbling over for some time now. People are dropping their subscriptions because it's so expensive, and because millions of people don't have jobs anymore. Do we even need regional sports networks anymore? Sinclair may have shot themselves in the foot since they own the former FOX RSN's, which will eventually have to drop the FOX branding, or pony up licensing fees.... It's the absolute perfect time to rebrand a network with a name that few would gravitate to, and that companies have dumped or restricted their carriage as well... Either way, it's going to cost a lot of $$$$$$$ that people are tired of paying for.

It's another hit, but the $48 million is less than the $60 million cash it coughed up to Nexstar. They probably have some bigger issues down the road with their finances, but will it put them back in the M&A game again to scale up to Nexstar? The icing on the cake? Pai isn't going to revoke the licenses because.... ..."On the other hand, I disagree with those who, for transparently political reasons, demand that we revoke Sinclair’s licenses. While they don’t like what they perceive to be the broadcaster’s viewpoints, the First Amendment still applies around here.” How politics have ruined everything. THEY. BROKE. THE. LAW. AND. SHOULD. BE. PUNISHED. Even the RKO General stuff seems tame compared to how Sinclair conducted themselves in the Tribune deal.

Tried again this morning on the Samsung browser on my phone, and still.... Maybe they're on to me....for everyone who hates the new logo they get the old one and anyone who likes it gets the new one

I checked on two different browsers, the old "wkyc 3" logo was still there. Please, for the love of anything holy....dump the circle 3!!!!

The Station example was an extreme example on what could possibly go wrong. If anything down here, it just energizes the locals even more who have been cooped up in their homes for the last month or so and want their "rights" back. Lots of rogue businesses have taken matters into their own hands and seeing the law swoop down on them once the word gets out. Even if Greg Peterson gets a slap on the wrist or even suspended or fired, it won't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Basically they're the 33/40 of Mobile since Alan Sealls is there now.

Owning the business itself is ok, but deciding to make a spectacle for all of the other media to see, and openly defy the laws set forth by the state is another story. It's setting the agenda using your own business as a "victim" all while earning another living reporting the "news" of the day. Remeber the Station night club disaster? Jeff Derdarian was a part owner while doing a story for his own station about night club safety that ended horribly wrong.

I applaud them for doing that, at the very least. Even looking at the coverage of the story, WPMI's seems to be more constrained than the other two stations.
