KOKI/KMYT couldn’t be considered “legacy” Cox stations since they were offloaded to the company in 2012, along with WFOX/WJAX (then WAWS/WTEV). Stations like WSB, WSOC and WFTV can be considered legacy stations since Cox has owned them for much longer (KTVU also can be called one, even as it’s now owned by Fox, given Cox owned it for the better part of five decades).

And it was WHBQ that was sold to Imagicomm along with KOKI/KMYT, and that station was sold to Cox as part of the 2013 swap that gave Fox ownership of KTVU/KICU; WLMT was sold to Nexstar/Mission as part of the Newport breakup and is now part of Tegna.

I guess what I meant to say instead of "legacy" was "pre-Apollo".  Imagiconn basically took all of the former Northwest stations, and the Memphis/Tulsa stations that had existed under the "old" Cox.

Don't know where WLMT came from... Fixed my prior post.  Just mixing up Memphis call letters, after all of the crazy transactions in that market over the past decade.

  2. Tulsa seems like a scary place for this to be going down especially since Sinclair and Scripps compete there.  Has Scripps done any "Scripps-a-fying" of KJRH?

At least they still have a dominant Griffin station that keeps things LOCAL.

Another tell-tale sign of the Tulsa market was that KOKI was one of the two "legacy" Cox stations cast off to Imagicomm (along with WHBQ in Memphis).  This was one of the Clear Channel stations purchased by Newport, who instead of dumping them to Sinclair or Nexstar, sold them to Cox at the time.  Cox is still the primary cable company there, right?

I vaguely remember her BRIEF time in Cleveland at WEWS as primary anchor with Ted Henry between Wilma Smith and Lorna Barrett.

I think it was something she said on air that sent her back to Milwaukee...

In the 1999 book "Cleveland TV Memories" by Tom Feran and R.D. Heldenfels, it was something she said in a Cleveland Plain Dealer article that WEWS management didn't like.

  5. If the FCC had real powers (and if Detroit was once like it was many decades ago before the automakers ruined it), they should have stripped Kevin Adell of his FCC license in favor of someone who could provide a better public service than he has.

This would have been nice in the 90s when CBS was looking for a new home, and WGPR could have stayed true to it's original mission, instead of being sucked away by CBS to provide a network station for Detroit.

  6. Apologies for the bump.

Here's a picture of WKRG's old set in use at the University of South Alabama.  They kept the desk, and parts of the backdrop.

This was during a visit of Alan Sealls, who also teaches meteorology classes at South Alabama.

  7. How much of the CW content is Canadian, and where does it come from?

If the Adell deal is cancelled, I could see Nexstar buying one or more of the low-powered stations in the Detroit area just to get a station to bundle retransmission rights with NewsNation to get it on cable, satellite and the OTT platforms.  Even if they have to enter into a time brokerage agreement until the regulation clears, these stations should be free and clear.  But entering a new market for this purpose could be another regulatory hurdle the FCC could take issue with....

  8. What's the harm (benefit) in showing CW network programming on NewsNation in the Detroit market?   Just like the old WGN days when they were used as a WB affiliate for the entire country, especially those markets that couldn't clear the network.

I know it's never going to happen because of how highly Nexstar (and Perry Sook) thinks of this third-rate "news" operation that gets trounced by NewsMax in the ratings....

  9. In Detroit, how many Canadian stations are available to American viewers?  IIRC, CBET (CBC) was the only one, and actually has cable viewership that extends past Toledo into places like Bowling Green and Sandusky.

When I was in Windsor many years ago, They carried all of the Detroit stations (sim-subbing American content with the channels it's carried on) but all of the Detroit newscasts were carried on their respective stations.   This was back during WWJ's first attempt at news.

For pre-season NFL, those are usually Friday/Saturday games in August, and I don’t know about y’all, but can’t recall seeing any gripping network programming on a Friday night in August…

[…and I look at the Washington Commanders who have had their preseason matches on WRC in the past (I didn’t pay attention this year), so there’s at least one network which does it on O&O stations…]

    J

Preseason NFL seems to be the exception because of the time of year and days of the week.

But if they try and pursue the rights carried by the RSN's, (MLB, NHL and NBA) those games are all over the place.  Maybe if the ecosystem breaks down enough, the leagues will have to start scheduling games at more "TV-friendly" times.

But Tegna's potential grab may be fractional, while most games could end up on a streaming platform run by the league(s) themselves, WHEN Bally Sports collapses.

  11. Unless Tegna has a duopoly partner (like in Denver & Seattle), I don't think the networks they're affiliated with would be too happy pre-empting network shows to air a local ballgame.  The network contracts are more iron-clad now and don't really allow for deviation unless it's a local news or weather emergency.  Not to mention all of the retransmission consent dollars the networks have their hand in.

And this includes stations like WBNS, who used to openly flaunt the OSU Buckeyes during basketball season, proudly pre-empting CBS shows to air an ESPN+ game in primetime.

  12. Looking into the WLMA sale to Marquee.  They are airing WTLW's existing programming on their old frequency after the old owner (American Christian Television) sold them the channel 4 facility and hung onto a low-powered station for their WTLW channel.

They've entered into a time brokerage agreement that started on March 1st of this year and ends February 29th, 2024 that simulcasts WTLW on WLMA.  No word on if this is a year-to-year agreement, or a 1-year opportunity for Marquee to forge their own path for WLMA.

  13. Even back in the 90s, CBS This Morning aired Arnold's "Shame on You" segments to a national audience, complete with the unforgettable intro and jingle, that ranks up there with Marvin Zindler's "Slime in the Ice Machine!".  CBS even produced several Shame On You hour-long collections of investigations across the country, including those done by Arnold Diaz.

Arnold was a trailblazer in using his brash style and presentation to get things out of people when they screwed others out of things.  He will be missed.

I wish Ryan the very best in his future!

I worked with him early in his career as he was wrapping up his degree at South Alabama, while doing fill-in weather in Biloxi.  He later got his first job in Albany, GA, then Knoxville, then landed his job in Atlanta.

Interesting.  This was a year before Media General sold WDEF to Morris, who basically maintained the Media General style at the time, well into their transition into HD.

That look at the time was originally done by VDO, and later brought in house by Media General, with some additions from other stations, mainly WFLA.  Perhaps the look was done "in-house" by a former employee who left Media General?

  16. I cringe to think what's next for some of the former Tribune stations out there that got some "last minute" changes before Nexstar took over.

Hopefully for stations like WGN and WJW, these changes are years away...but others like KWGN/KDVR and WTTV/WXIN were converted pretty quickly from some of their Tribune looks/packages...
