  1. How much of the CW content is Canadian, and where does it come from?

If the Adell deal is cancelled, I could see Nexstar buying one or more of the low-powered stations in the Detroit area just to get a station to bundle retransmission rights with NewsNation to get it on cable, satellite and the OTT platforms.  Even if they have to enter into a time brokerage agreement until the regulation clears, these stations should be free and clear.  But entering a new market for this purpose could be another regulatory hurdle the FCC could take issue with....

  2. What's the harm (benefit) in showing CW network programming on NewsNation in the Detroit market?   Just like the old WGN days when they were used as a WB affiliate for the entire country, especially those markets that couldn't clear the network.

I know it's never going to happen because of how highly Nexstar (and Perry Sook) thinks of this third-rate "news" operation that gets trounced by NewsMax in the ratings....

  3. In Detroit, how many Canadian stations are available to American viewers?  IIRC, CBET (CBC) was the only one, and actually has cable viewership that extends past Toledo into places like Bowling Green and Sandusky.

When I was in Windsor many years ago, They carried all of the Detroit stations (sim-subbing American content with the channels it's carried on) but all of the Detroit newscasts were carried on their respective stations.   This was back during WWJ's first attempt at news.

For pre-season NFL, those are usually Friday/Saturday games in August, and I don’t know about y’all, but can’t recall seeing any gripping network programming on a Friday night in August…

[…and I look at the Washington Commanders who have had their preseason matches on WRC in the past (I didn’t pay attention this year), so there’s at least one network which does it on O&O stations…]

Preseason NFL seems to be the exception because of the time of year and days of the week.

But if they try and pursue the rights carried by the RSN's, (MLB, NHL and NBA) those games are all over the place.  Maybe if the ecosystem breaks down enough, the leagues will have to start scheduling games at more "TV-friendly" times.

But Tegna's potential grab may be fractional, while most games could end up on a streaming platform run by the league(s) themselves, WHEN Bally Sports collapses.

  5. Unless Tegna has a duopoly partner (like in Denver & Seattle), I don't think the networks they're affiliated with would be too happy pre-empting network shows to air a local ballgame.  The network contracts are more iron-clad now and don't really allow for deviation unless it's a local news or weather emergency.  Not to mention all of the retransmission consent dollars the networks have their hand in.

And this includes stations like WBNS, who used to openly flaunt the OSU Buckeyes during basketball season, proudly pre-empting CBS shows to air an ESPN+ game in primetime.

  6. Looking into the WLMA sale to Marquee.  They are airing WTLW's existing programming on their old frequency after the old owner (American Christian Television) sold them the channel 4 facility and hung onto a low-powered station for their WTLW channel.

They've entered into a time brokerage agreement that started on March 1st of this year and ends February 29th, 2024 that simulcasts WTLW on WLMA.  No word on if this is a year-to-year agreement, or a 1-year opportunity for Marquee to forge their own path for WLMA.

  7. Even back in the 90s, CBS This Morning aired Arnold's "Shame on You" segments to a national audience, complete with the unforgettable intro and jingle, that ranks up there with Marvin Zindler's "Slime in the Ice Machine!".  CBS even produced several Shame On You hour-long collections of investigations across the country, including those done by Arnold Diaz.

Arnold was a trailblazer in using his brash style and presentation to get things out of people when they screwed others out of things.  He will be missed.

I wish Ryan the very best in his future!

I worked with him early in his career as he was wrapping up his degree at South Alabama, while doing fill-in weather in Biloxi.  He later got his first job in Albany, GA, then Knoxville, then landed his job in Atlanta.

    We got one from WMGT.

    Looks like a MG knockoff

Interesting.  This was a year before Media General sold WDEF to Morris, who basically maintained the Media General style at the time, well into their transition into HD.

That look at the time was originally done by VDO, and later brought in house by Media General, with some additions from other stations, mainly WFLA.  Perhaps the look was done "in-house" by a former employee who left Media General?

  10. I cringe to think what's next for some of the former Tribune stations out there that got some "last minute" changes before Nexstar took over.

Hopefully for stations like WGN and WJW, these changes are years away...but others like KWGN/KDVR and WTTV/WXIN were converted pretty quickly from some of their Tribune looks/packages...

If that were the case, WCTV would pretty much have a monopoly on news there.

They've pretty much owned the market since the beginning.  Florida State University nabbed the VHF allocation for Tallahassee (as a non-commercial station), while WCTV nabbed the next closest one in Thomasville, Georgia.  It wasn't until 1976 when WECA (now WTXL) signed on, and not until 1983 when WTWC did.  WALB in Albany still had city-grade coverage in the northern fringes and served Tallahassee as their default NBC affiliate until WTWC.

The ratings pretty much have reflected this for years...WCTV owns the market by a large margin with WTXL as a distant second, and WTWC as a perennial non-factor.  Even Sinclair opted to still have WCTV produce WTWC's .2 (FOX 49) newscasts and have absolutely nothing for WTWC/NBC.

    It's WFTX.

That's probably even worse, unless they are getting crushed at 10pm by the WINK-powered newscast on WXCW.

That's a FOX affiliate's calling card unless the station is a total ratings dog or mismanaged by its duopoly partner.

All the while Scripps is heavily investing in sports on the broadcast properties while the newscasts are getting the shaft in smaller markets.

  13. FTVLive is talking about a Scripps station in Florida that is no longer doing a live late newscast...could this be WTXL in Tallahassee?

If that's the case, the news vacuum continues in a place where Sinclair gave up 20 years ago as well, in a state capitol controlled by a wannabe dictator governor who's only in it for his own ego and political career.

  14. When GrayOne hits WHNS Fox Carolina, I wonder if they're going to tweak the package since WSPA's is pretty much the same thing (font and lower-wise).  They're a legacy Meredith station, so that package may stick around a little longer (and since its the package GrayOne is based off of)

Nexstar hasn't had any great packages in the wings either, the newer one on WDCW, WRIC and WMBB is more of a downgrade.

  15. This "cult" Dagmar was in.....was it any way related to the Ernest Angley Ministry?

Her first TV job was at WBNX-TV.  The onetime station manager was named Ronald Midcap.  I don't know if it was her ex-husband, but knowing all of the stuff there, it's likely the same family she was "arranged" to be married into.

From what I remember, she did voiceovers for promos, and even served as a kids host before "Patty" took over when they picked up the Fox Kids network in the WOIO/WJW affiliation swap.

  16. Sinclair is starting up another diginet "The Nest"

    https://tvnewscheck.com/programming/article/sinclair-to-launch-the-nest-broadcast-network/

Basically, Sinclair is trying their hand at "TrueReal" which Scripps/Katz folded earler this year.

The channel will replace "Stadium" on the broadcast stations that carry it.

I also came to discover, that Sinclair divested most of their stake to Silver Chalice back in May, while still supplying some programming to the network

I really think Sinclair's only hope is that someone gets re-elected in 2024.  And that all of his supporters will funnel in the "dark money" to keep the lights on and the messages flowing.  Other than that, this company is a zombie walking trying to cash in on trends that have little to do with TV.

  17. The silver lining for TV is when the digital bubbles start bursting.  Streaming companies are sucking away more content and jacking up the price because of it.  Then you have dumpster fires like Bally Sports, where sports teams are bailing out left and right, and in most cases, end up on linear TV once again.

But the amount of rehashed content on TV is quite alarming.  Who would have thought stalwarts like Judge Judy and Jerry Springer would survive in syndication as reruns after production of shows like these wrapped several years ago?

It doesn't help when you have shows like Mathis Court on TV while the OG Judge Mathis is still filling time in repeats....

  18. In a place like San Antonio, it's an irony for Sinclair to be marketing the station that way, with it's strong and historic ties to the Hispanic population.

Because we all know downstate, stuff is going on at the border that they sure love to cover, along with someone's very important laptop.
