And speaking of WBBM and Lester Holt, here's a brand-new upload from NewsActive3 -- a weekend newscast from 1986:

Thank you, Ramona! Here are a few WBBM opens (and a close) featuring the faster-paced 1990 update of that theme:

From the beautiful town of Madison, WI, here WISC's midday news from 1991 with the unknown WBBM-like theme: Here's the original theme as heard on WBBM:

Some Phoenix news clips (but no opens) from 1982 -- all of them about radio station KZZP: EDIT: Well, the video got removed, so I'll take advantage of this break in our regularly scheduled programming to share a a few of my favorite non-news opens. WQED, Pittsburgh; The Infinite Voyage (a science documentary series), 1989: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=E8DOV2VLTzs;m=1;s=57 Yorkshire Television, UK; Whicker's World (a current affairs travelogue), 1980 -- with a truly unforgettable final shot: And from 1987, Our World, a short-lived ABC News series that looked back at important periods in recent American history:

Speaking of CKND, here's the station's 50th anniversary special from 2005 -- it includes a mention of CKND's pre-1975 existence as KCND across the border in Pembina, ND*: Part 2: Part 3: * KCND is mentioned in Timothy Green's The Universal Eye, a 1972 book about television around the world: "The village of Pembina in North Dakota seems a strange place to have a powerful television station. Only a couple of hundred people live there and the nearest American town of any size is many miles away. But the advertisers who queue up to buy time on KCND-TV Pembina have their eye not on Americans, but on the half a million Canadians living just north of the border in the city of Winnipeg. The investment pays off; the people of Winnipeg spend a fifth of their viewing time watching the Pembina station."

Speaking of The National, that was also the name of a short-lived flagship newscast on Australia's ABC in the mid-1980s. You may recognize the music from Channel 4 in the UK or KTSP in '80s Phoenix: Brisbane had its own edition, presumably because Queensland did not observe Daylight Saving Time:

Chicago's WGN pays tribute to former WGN, WBBM, and WLS news anchor John Drury, 2007:

Of course, the On Your Side theme itself -- with a different cut used for the open -- was introduced at the tail end of the previous look:

Besides a couple of promos and 4:30, I believe this is the only other YT clip from WLS's On Your Side era:

Thank you so much, 24994J! This certainly answers a lot of questions.

The following 1983 WLS newscast is really interesting; it's from the On Your Side era and features extensive coverage of the mayoral election that took place the following day. And because it's an in-studio recording, it includes conversations during commercial breaks: I've always liked the On Your Side era, but since it was short-lived and was followed by another anchor reshuffle, I presume WLS experienced declining ratings at the time. Does anyone know more about this time in the station's history? And the timing has always confused me -- the KABC-like set was introduced before Joe Ahern joined the station, right?
