Better yet, the whole newscast is available, in 60fps:
Worth noting — this is a generation of KCRA opens I had not seen. They'd change again in 1996, including an updated music package (the NMSA groups both).
Great find. I think that music package dates to around 1992 - the lower third graphics are also from around then (they borrowed from the early 90s NBC News lower thirds).
Liked how they'd sometimes key the feed from LiveCamera 3 behind the anchors for the two-shot. One thing a little off about that set - the 'CHANNEL 3 REPORTS' lettering above the anchors never matched lettering they used for the masthead on air.

It's a distinctive look but doesn't hold up as well as the Jimenez sets. Those bulkheads hang down too low and make the talent look compressed. The WTVQ set is the best of that lot.

An interesting KRON promo from 1986 about a station's story that ended up on its competitor KGO:
A lot of navel gazing there - no wonder they only had moments of being competitive with KPIX / KGO in the late 80s.

Not a video - but classic TV news history talk - after reading the passing of Ed, did a little searching, and this came up.
Great long article about the competitive dynamics in Houston TV news in 1994. KHOU usurping KTRK, and the downbeat mood at KTRK dealing with it. Even a mention of changing the theme.

Grrrr. Wavy 10 Fan. Info junkie. You're so gonna get it.
KHOU 11 news 1985
Interesting they slapped on some Magid red white and blue on the set after launching the 'Share the spirit' campaign. Which coincidentally CBS ran with a year later.
Didn't seem to help either of them!
Also didn't realize they used And You per Info Junkie's video - always cool to see that Telesound work in action.

That’s just a standard 2000’s Gray open to me. Not bad, not great.
You must be a youngin’... this is what that open replaced. I remember WCTV being mocked around these parts for having this logo:
I like it - someone cared about theatrics with the anchors walking on the set. Some 3D action, gold, and well, it's definitely distinctive which is more than I can say about half of the opens these days.

This is very rare for KBVO (KEYE), Interesting to see "The Spirit of Texas" campaign being used on a non-Big Three station.
That '42' logo has a bit of a KUTV 'S2' logo feel.

Didn't realize KCRA licensed its 'where the news comes first' trademark to another station (KSDK). They both use the registered trademark symbol, and in the trademark database KCRA and Hearst are the only entries dating back to the early 80s.

It was, arguably, the ABC O&O's formula for success in the 90s: Copying WPVI.
I think only WTVG, WJRT, and WTVD were doing anything resembling a deviation at the time.
Even today, all the major O&Os have their video wall backdrops and what do they do? For most it's just a still image of the skyline.
If any of them could find a way to make the blue wall look attractive on a monitor bank today, they'd probably do it!
KGO was an outlier too. Did its own thing except for a quick couple of years 1985 - 87 when the company built them a new building and they got the KABC set. That got quickly dumped for something in house.
Then when the WLS manager came in 1998 he brought the WLS set and theme - that lasted 4 or 5 years. Well, the theme only two years before Stephen Arnold's Signature in 2000.
They even dumped Cool Hand Luke three times - from 82 - 84 and 87 - 88, then in 94 instead of going with Eyewitness News they commissioned News One. Didn't get around to using Eyewitness News until 2006.

A 1997 edition of Tonight Arizona (the 10 p.m. news) from KTVK in Phoenix:
That's a pretty cool animation - kind of 80s retro. There's an extended version from 2000 here - has some of that HBO Feature Presentation vibe.

I’m starting to think Pulitzer kept roughly most of Gannett’s L3’s and remnants after the WLKY acquisition.
That close sounds a cousin of the 9 or 11 Country package KUSA and KARE used.

Not exactly discovered...but five seconds into this Mitsubishi commercial you get the first 5 notes of the Enforcer / I Love Chicago signature.

Though in this case the music is a take on an 80s Twisted Sister song.

Another from KTRK...
Clip is split between a 6 PM Saturday Newscast from 5/24/1986 & half of a 6 PM weekday newscast from 4/25/1986
They must have one of us as an intern this summer posting these 'on this day in x' newscasts. Great stuff.

The Today Show moves to a new set, 1990:
Loved the old apartment set - so well lit and warm - made the guests look great. One of my favorite sets of all time for news. Wasn't a fan of the new one. Just plain dark.

Pretty advanced ABC network show promo graphics in there - some 3D and nice text for the titles / times - holds up there

Horrible quality - it's a DX pickup of KCRA from someone in Vancouver. But this is the brief 1989 close to what I think is a 5pm newscast. KCRA didn't run credits or closing music...they'd play a bumper into the copyright chyron. This bumper was around from around 1988 - 90 or so.

While we're on KMGH...here's that Newsmat set and graphics still in use in 1989
Also you get to hear one of the synthesized Great News cuts. For some reason, most of those didn't make it into the package set that's been floating around the trading circuit. Guess Gari kept it out of the package when they released the later series.
Also here's the open from that era / another one of those missing cuts. The vamp is without a voiceover.

KMGH in 1985 (60fps!) with coverage of a flash flood in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The open is clipped but it's a nearly full half hour with a young Harry Smith, the Welch Newsmat look and set, and a fantastic close:
Great looking set. Also near the end, the first bulletin of news about the crash of Delta 191 - about 15 minutes after it happened.

Thank you, Ramona!
Here are a few WBBM opens (and a close) featuring the faster-paced 1990 update of that theme:
Cool to see they had the separate studio and newsroom set going, and changed up the studio set elements for each broadcast.
And wow - Lester and Adele...

WCBS August 1984 5pm - great wide shot of the dual sets at the end when they throw to the 6pm. I think this one gets an award for a set that maximizes a small space.

Also in that same video...
Promo for Channel 7 News (while the newscasts were still using 'News Scene' branding). Guess the changeover happened shortly thereafter. Lots of competition from a surging KPIX those days.

KGO January 28, 1986 - Challenger coverage newscast with Van Amburg. He's one of a kind, great anchor, though takes a little liberty with speculation at times here trying to take on a complex national story.

Classic Video Thread (pre-2008)

Great find without the call letters in the Youtube title.
First time pretty much all of the closing music has been found in the clear. That lasted I think from around 1980 until just a few months after this clip. They updated the music a touch when they introduced a new set later in the year - but that music update only lasted about a year and a half before Kevin O'Brien the legendary GM came on board and commissioned the classic 1987 theme and 3D SF Bay open.
Someone get this to NMSA in case it's taken down.
