The 80s TODAY living room set was kind of in house
There's a clip on YT where it debuts and Willard Scott mentions the two people who led it - one was the director of the show - the other was Carole Lee Caroll - a scenic artist who did work for Letterman and some Broadway shows - maybe she was retained as defacto for NBC around then - but no agency / set design specialty firm involved.

Full CBS News coverage (w/local coverage from KPIX in San Francisco) of the Bush/Dukakis election from November 8, 1988:
And some classic Pete Wilson anchoring for KGO thrown in there before the KPIX clips - great find

The good old days huh? Well spot the difference in this clip.
They might have a record for set and look changes in the 90s - just a couple years later they switched to the antique logo

Hope Bill stays / gets well
Wonder why Lee didn't do it outside his home - they do outdoor weather shots all the time

Somehow I'd never seen that. I doubt the '85 date, but yes, that's it. Matches with the fact that WOKR began using Hello x Great News cuts in 1987 too.
It came around the time WXIA launched the Great News package (you picked up on the signature there) - so 85 or 86

Airchive on a roll...KNBC 6pm 1988 - at the end a nice hit of the jazzy sax 1985 close.
By this newscast the 1985 bumpers had been retired for a synth version of NewsCenter II

Cool set - around the time WNBC went to a similar set - both of which were based on KNBC
Like the header with the masthead logo above and spot lighting

Didn't realize KCBS went through a "let's copy the legacy KABC set" phase
Right around when KABC updated its set to be more like KNBCs...

Great article on how news out of the box all went down

This has the longest recording of the KARE/KUSA 9 Country / 11 Country closing theme I've come across so far

Someone mentioned the studio got upgraded recently - I noticed the backdrop is seamless now which looks great - anything else change, only caught a glimpse

Ah yes the casual low desk (or high chairs) I remember that - a take on the Live at Five format
Ground breaking was the main KNBC set this was attached to - so many stations used a variant of it

If you go search for more videos with this 4pm set, the groundbreaking part was how the 4pm desk was extremely low. You were able to see pretty much what the anchors were wearing. I included a quick link of a that shows what I am talking about below
And here's a KOVR 1989 weather segment
Yet another transition period for 13...brand new station logo / graphics and News Watch package, along with a refresh of the set...but with another refresh to come months later
Here's what it looked like a few weeks prior
And here's the next change months later...skyline with blinds...
Followed by a newsroom set months after that

KNBC 1990 4pm preshow - there's a great wide shot at the end that shows how the 4pm set is connected to the main set
Groundbreaking set - so many stations used variants on the main set for years to come

KCRA May 1983 weather - still using 'KCRA and You' package - that puts the intro of the Where the News Comes First package sometime between May 83 and January 84

Even considering its small market size, this doesn't feel like a newscast from 1990:
I also just learned about W call letters west of the Mississippi

KOMO 'Live at 4' open 1984. Looks like the KTRK Live at Five opening animation, plus a special set - looks great in the wide shot

Not sure where this came from - maybe that WGN night where they recreated the NBC mid 80s Thursday night lineup - but first clean version of the long '85 Let's All Be There ID I've seen

KOIN, Portland, OR; 11 p.m. (complete), 1988:
Cool - Welch style graphics but without a Newsmat set
That's a bare bones newsroom!

At this point, it might be less time-consuming to come up with a list of markets where Udell hasn't worked!
He didn't stay long at any particular station, did he?
Here he is during his second stint in Chicago:
I was going to say that was peak Udell market wise then looked online and saw he did stints in LA and NY early on.
He figured out settling down in Hawaii though...long long run there. Looking good in retirement here

WLS 1990 preshow
Uses a bed that's a mixdown of the News Series 2000 main theme that eliminates the horns. Never heard other stations use the stripped down themes from that package - and have yet to come across clean versions of those mixdowns on anything discovered to date. Wonder if WLS was the only station sent those cues.

KNBC 1988 Olympic News Break
The ending has the synth bumper music that replaced News Center II cuts
I thought didn't debut until a year or so later...it lasted into 92, 93 I think

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the loma prieta earthquake. Here's a compilation.
Nice to see KNBC kept newscast archives after the move to the current building
