  1. YouTuber Clancy Burke has left WKRC after 3 years.  Before that, she worked at WKEF in Dayton for two years.

She talks about her decision in her most recent video:

Didn't they just hire Jeff Andrews from WAOW a few months ago to be their chief? They seem to go through chiefs (and talent in general) like infants go through diapers. Not to mention, the previous chief, Jason Lindsay, didn't last long in that position either.

TG should rent, not buy, once Morris finds out he's not moving the needle.

I think Morris is giving it a big college try - recently hiring Lexington media veteran Miranda Combs as news director.  Between this - and Lee and Hayley coming from WLEX after that controversy, perhaps they’re trying to better position WTVQ amid a likely weaker, Scripps-controlled WLEX?

That should change soon with Matt Quinn now in charge. Not saying things will change quickly (100+ stations is a lot to handle), but they'll get there.

Glad to hear Matt Quinn is in charge - I enjoy his aesthetic.  This also means the Meredith legacy stations should stay in tact for a while…

Hopefully, WVUE is on his radar…

    3) Is that a talent open or mugshot? The meteorologist practically looking to the left.  It’s about as awkward and cringy as WJET’s talent open.

Overall, I give this a ‘C’ - it’s definitely an improvement, but more could be done on the design/creativity side of the graphics and music.

A Google image search of "Heidi Moore WVNS" reveals this is really her preferred "look" for photos.  At least she's consistent!

  5. In Toledo, Melissa Voetsch announced her retirement from TV news.

She worked at WTOL as an anchor from the late 1980s through 2012’ish, when she left quietly after facing some heart issues. She then resurfaced at WTVG where she was a reporter since 2014.

WATN in Memphis has been using the updated look for the last couple of weeks now. I'll post a compilation on my channel later this week.

That WATN open uses two different versions of the ABC logo...  when "ABC" is by itself, note the distance between the letters and the edge of the circle...

Other than that, it really does look better than the version before it.

  7. Moderators - can you please consider renaming this thread to “Gray Graphics” since this thread has long passed the scope of the topic…and ironically, the WOIO graphics aren’t even the standard Gray graphics.

(It might be a better idea than being rude to people who post threads with this topic/title, then belittle them and shut down the thread…)

  8. Resurrecting this topic after a year to report that WKYC seems to be going with a more “traditional” (and very blue) open for its 6pm newscast.  (The name remains…as does the circle 3 and in-newscast graphics.) Are bigger changes coming?

WBKB does it again. Man, this station is filled with bad opens

First thought - is this intentionally tacky?  The way they have the anchors pose leads me to wonder...

But - I have to be honest, other than the creepy eyes - there is at least an EFFORT to produce a unique opening here.  With cleaner typography (Script font for anchor names) and a "KISS" approach to some of the graphics - it would improve quite a bit.  I actually like the way the words are rendered within the environments - and Northern Michigan has plenty of beautiful spaces to use as inspiration.  I'd also invest in better music and a professional VO.

So yes...it's bad.  But there's also some effort here that I can appreciate.  Compared to say...Scripps, there was certainly way more effort and work that went into developing this open.

Maurice from NY and Norah from DC?

Margaret Brennen is also a possibility although perhaps Maurice and Norah is a better idea.

We're probably getting into speculatron territory, but I see Vladimir Duthiers as a potential co-anchor as well, as he has a higher profile at the network level.

  11. WTOL meteorologist Robert Shiels is leaving after 27 years.

    https://www.wtol.com/article/about-us/wtol-11-chief-meteorologist-robert-shiels-leaving-station-weatherman/512-0dc6b4ed-8cbe-468a-9775-cb4272cfeda7

While WTOL hasn't had a deep bench in the news department and completely turned over its weekday anchor teams over the past year, WTOL meteorologists Chris Vickers and Ryan Wichman have been there for over a decade, so expect one of them to fill this spot.

Diane and Lee will still be anchoring for a while on WTVG

I hope so...Diane singlehandedly adds some “gravitas” to Toledo TV.

2021 will be her 40th(!) year on Toledo television as she started at WDHO/WNWO before heading to WTVG in Dec. 1984.

Overall, I like this move for WTOL.  I was hoping WTOL would make this move when Jerry Anderson retired - but it’s better late than never.  It instantly adds some much needed longevity to WTOL, and likely increases morale for the station, since Jeff Smith has been in Toledo for 20+ years and doesn’t view the market as a stepping stone to something bigger.

  13. In Toledo, anchor Jeff Smith crosses the street from WTVG (where he was morning anchor for at least 15 years) to WTOL, where he’ll join former WTVG reporter Mel Andrews as co-anchor at 5, 6 and 11pm.

    https://www.wtol.com/amp/article/about-us/anchor-jeff-smith-joins-wtol-11-evening-news-team/512-2db7900f-eef6-4659-a367-ceb6e4a3541b?__twitter_impression=true

This, plus the addition of Tiffany Tarpley (from WKYC, but also of WUPW when it had its own operation) completes the anchor upheaval WTOL has had since Kristi Leigh left for KMPH in Feb 2020.

Overall, solid hires...and folks with experience in NWO.  Smith put WTVG on the map as the morning newscasts, led by him, were the first WTVG newscasts to lead the ratings.  Now, 13abc is a dominant #1.  We shall see if his move makes an impact on WTOL’s numbers.  It could...as I would expect Diane Larson and/or Lee Conklin to retire in the next 3-5 years...

Ten years ago, it was a kick ass newscast with David Whitman, Sharon Reed etc. Looked like a Top 15. What happened?

Romona Robinson was the first step in removing any “Action” from “19 Action News.”  They dropped Reed, Lynna Lai, Danielle Serino and many others once Romona arrived.  Imagine that team with the current look and energy - IMO it would rival Fox 8 for the best newscast in town, especially since WKYC is a mess and WEWS is a shell of its former self.  (And yes, it’s ironic many of those folks ended up at Channel 3, but neither Lai or Serino are being utilized to their potential.  Choosing Betsy Kling to anchor over Lynna Lai wasn’t a great idea. But I digress...)

I wonder how long WOIO/WUAB is locked into their home in Downtown Cleveland.   Any idea why they moved there in the first place?  It seems the WUAB building in Parma could have worked, but at the time, the area around it was booming and it gave way to an OfficeMax store, and it was "cool" to be in downtown Cleveland.

Flash forward to now, and Parmatown is a ghost town, and there are plenty of former big boxes that could be the new home for WOIO and WUAB.  A little breathing room could help their issues, as it seems they are packed like sardines (amongst the rats) in the basement of Reserve Square.   Gray has built new homes for their stations like the showplace for WRDW/WAGT in Augusta, but I doubt Gray would do such a thing for WOIO/WUAB.

They just installed a new set at Reserve Square, so I suspect they’re locked in down there for a bit...  I do agree that more space would do then make good.

They had a really decent team then let them all go...

Apparently, WKYC is in third place (even fourth at times) according to this email.

It’s reassuring to see some sort of resistance at WKYC.  But it is certainly not coming from the top, as GM Micki Byrnes nominated Adam Miller for a Crain’s “40 under 40 award.”

WBNS went the cheap tegna route. If they wanted experience, they would have promoted Scott Light, or brought it someone of similar caliber. Instead they bring in a kid from Toledo, who is good, but hardly the most qualified.

And, he is probably going to make 125k, instead of what the job should pay.
But its not just WBNS. Look at CMH. They passed over the older white guy there (Johansen) who is clearly more experienced, for a younger kid, who looks misplaced next to Colleen.

Same for WKRC in Cincinnati. Lots of young Black guy/older woman anchor pairings in Ohio lately...

I thought WBNS would go after Mark Taylor after he left WCMH to replace Revish.  Wouldn't a more familiar face be a better option to join the evening desk as opposed to someone from another market?

That’s what I would’ve thought as well, seeing that Mark had a pretty strong following in the market.  Maybe, if they intend on filling the Scott Light slot, they could pursue Taylor for that?

I am honestly surprised by this move - and think it would’ve went a different direction if Dispatch still owned 10TV.  One thing jd clear -  the days of superstars like Andrea Cambern are looooong gone.

But, as an aside, I’ve been bewildered by many anchor assignments made in Ohio this year.  (Inskeep over Johansen at WKRC, Johansen displacing Taylor at WCMH, Kerry replacing Mike Jackson at WCMH, Kristi Leigh leaving her home market and WTOL taking 7 months to fill that seat internally, Laura Caso/Sara Shookman swap at WKYC, etc...)

Melissa Andrews has finally been named evening anchor at WTOL, reuniting with Andrew Kinsey.  She replaces Kristi Leigh, now at KMPH.

And now, Andrew Kinsey is leaving to replace Jerry Revish at WBNS.

    https://www.10tv.com/mobile/article/news/local/andrew-kinsey-joins-wbns-10tv-as-evening-news-co-anchor/530-5a9e8a19-7475-4ea5-a898-c55fd4f2a623

Lots of volatility at the WTOL anchor desk this year.  To be expected since WTOL is firmly in second place and Toledo is shrinking from a DMA perspective.  Maybe they’ll pick up Jeff Smith from WTVG?  Doubtful...since he would likely cost $$.
