1. Crain's Cleveland Business has an interesting article on how a (fingers-crossed) successful Browns team benefits the stations.

    https://www.crainscleveland.com/kevin-kleps-blog/browns-resurgence-good-everyone-cleveland-tv-industry

The author seems to be poking a bit of fun at WKYC's 'director of content:'

    Quote

One other note from our conversations with the TV networks about the Browns: Northeast Ohio native Adam Miller, WKYC's director of content, had been a senior producer for the "Today" show prior to returning to the area. Miller had this to say about the sports-mad region: "It's been interesting in the eight months I've been here to see how much sports drives news for this town."

My sources — social media, TV, the internet, my 10-year-old daughter, the horns that blared downtown after LeBron James announced his return, the insane parade that followed two years later and the NFL draft's former status as Cleveland's Super Bowl — say that is accurate.

Could a clue be in another post on today's FTV Live?

Or...is her ego so large she's headed towards something a bit more....mainstream?  I'm not so sure though since she undoubtedly has a very "urban" style...and was a major component to WOIO's success in the mid-2000's.  (Her sparring with Mike Trivisonno was classic.)

With WOIO's direction changing, it's obvious that Tanaka's ass is grass. He definitely knows he doesn't fit in with 19 News, so what to do: not give a f*ck obviously.

It isn’t too hard to read with enthusiasm...or is it?  Not to go into speculation territory here, but could Chris Tye be coming to 19? If Tanaka signed a three-year deal, his contract would be up this summer.  And if Tye has a 6-month non-compete, it would expire around that time....  A quick look at Instagram shows Tye is friends with Jason Nicholas.  So, who knows....

Tiffani Tucker is sort of like a low-budget version of Romona Robinson.

Haha... I can't believe she's been with 19 for more than 10 years!  And it's funny how we're harkening back to "19 Action News" as a "success" - particularly since "Cleveland 19" was such a snooze!

Cleveland is a funny TV market. It seems 19 and 3 basically traded their entire stable of personalities over the past 5 years.  Lynna Lai, Danielle Serino, Dawn Kendrick for Romona Robinson, Lydia Esparra and Mark Nolan.  And they all lost their personalities in the process!

If they want to bring the "Action" back into 19, they need someone with some personality...

"Calling Danielle Serino from her Jim Donavan sidekick role at Channel 3......!"    (Oh WKYC, talk about a station with a deep bench of talent yet so few newscasts. But I digress.)

Good look, but the first 30 seconds of that newscast is enough to make me want to change the channel. Shaky camera and the anchors seem a bit unsure of themselves. Plus, holding tablets looks d u m b. At least you can fold papers.

I agree.  And somebody needs to give Chris Tanaka a cup of coffee.  His style is very bland for this reboot.

They need to invest in some personalities to help pull this off.  It is like they’re pressing the “undo button” and going back to the future...but new graphics aren’t going to fix the poor production and bland anchors.

I think this one is not that surprising considering that David Crabtree did not move out of the anchor chair like many had thought he would. Wonder if he will go back to Cincinnati?

“Back” to Cincinnati? Not sure his family actually left after looking at his recent Tweets about Mason HS and departing CVG airport.  WKRC could use him, IMO, since their new 4pm anchor is less than stellar.

They could’ve at least just acknowledged things changed when Crabtree decided to stick around.

    THIS!!

Now, WTOL is "spilling the tea" on the now-viral video. http://www.wtol.com/2019/03/28/its-time-spill-tea-wtols-cringe-worthy-video/

They probably shouldn't have led their statement with more slang - but the takeaway of that article comes from the teachers who wrote the station:

"I personally would like to say thank you to you and the rest of the anchors at your television station for having the courage to stand up and do something that teachers have been doing for years."

Yep.  Anyone who has ever attended a pep rally can attest to that.   Like I said earlier, folks are too hasty to judge.  And I totally disagree with Scott Jones/FTVLive on his continued ridicule.  I think the Toledo Blade does a nice job summing this up - and alluding to a larger concern in the "Twitterverse":

So...is this a record for TEGNAization with WTOL's morning show crew, even without the Newzatonix chanters and graphics? 'Enjoy' this painful 53 seconds of 'how do you do, fellow kids?' where Gray HQ is like 'yup, we made the right call in keeping WTVG'. 🙃

These folks do not deserve all the hate they're receiving.  This is not an actual newscast, but instead a video made for the school district - to help with a social media campaign "encouraging students to do well on their tests."   It's no different than some of the 'funny' promos created to promote newscasts.  It isn't abnormal for a local news station (or its personalities) to attempt humor.  Look at the quasi-journalists on the air past and present....Robin Swoboda, Bob Herzog, Kristen Hampton.  They all have a "schtick" that isn't for everyone - but they stay employed (or keep getting new jobs) because...on some level, it resonates with the target demo.

I feel badly for these folks - but judging from how Melissa Andrews engages with folks on social media...she won't be taking the s***.

If ABC winds up canceling GMA Day Strahan & Sara (what are their ratings like?) and does announces a comeback for the cancelled soaps, they can only bring back one or the other, since they gave 3pm back to the affiliates back in 2012 after OLTL's replacement The Revolution, bombed. And don't expect them to cancel the View too, that show just got it's second wind by becoming another anti-Trump outlet.

My money is on the older All My Children getting the reboot, but who knows?

Entering Spectulatron territory here, but - they could also make them both a half hour a la Bold and the Beautiful on CBS. Or be truly unconventional (and old fashioned) and divide the two hours into three 40-minute shows.  Since they all function in the same “world” - it could open the door for some fun crossover and hook fans in to the whole lineup.  (Because I’d assume they’d film in LA like GH and AMC towards the end of its run.).

Best guess is that they end up on a Disney-owned streaming platform.

Hmm. Yolanda Harris, I would say, but Pete I can't co-sign, However,  Yolanda plays second fiddle at BNS where she was the mainstay at WSYX.  I was told many told her (Yolanda) not to go over to BNS. It might be #1

but inside it, a mess and many are still wondering how long the Wolfe family going to keep the station in their hands.  Yolanda was a band-aid to keep the machine pumping, but nothing last forever.  Remember SYX was fighting with

    CMH for #2.

If I recall correctly, BNS was trying to get Yolanda as early as 2012, to replace Andrea Cambern.  Perhaps if she would’ve joined them then, the energy could’ve remained. (Kristyn Hartman simply wasn’t a Cambern clone, and it didn’t work out - but I do feel badly for how she left...given the 10 still dominated with her at the helm.)

BNS is a tough station to watch...because truth be told, any energy and personality that station had left with Andrea Cambern.

(But I digress...Mitch Jacob will have his work cut out fo him at WSMV.  I remember his work at WTOL after his stint in Phoenix.)

He made WSYX more aggressive in their news coverage, there were some spikes in #2 at WSYX but it wasn't across the board in all newscast.  Jamie Justice the current ND she couldn't keep the momentum going... I think he couldn't do what he did at WSYX for WJLA.  A different market and Sinclair was ready to cut that budget at WJLA and he resigned during Sweeps.  So he has his work cut out at WSMV.

Some of the momentum for WSYX was also lost once WBNS poached their talent (Yolanda Harris and Pete Scalia) and sterilized them.  (You won't see this kind of "personality" when Yolanda is paired with Jerry Revish.)

WKYC had Duji from the "Rover's Morning Glory" morning show on WMMS-FM fill-in at the anchor desk this morning, and she even gave a weather report as well.

Tomorrow is going to be Robin Swoboda filling in again.

Their new news director "director of content" seems to want to make his impression on WKYC....and it isn't a good one. He's trying to turn their morning show into something like the Today show, but without the actual personalities who can pull this off. (Though arguably, Robin Swoboda could easily be the Kathie Lee Gifford in this scenario.)  They're pulling a Fox 8 by making the news all about the personalities (Hollie Strano's "deeply personal story", an official dog "mascot," putting chocolate syrup on cereal)  - but to me, it is just falling flat.  (If you notice, their director of content rarely tweets actual news...it's an endless stream of love for Kathie Lee and Hoda...)

These days are long behind us...

  13. They were very careful never to say that Brad Johansen would directly replace Crabtree. He was obviously hired to fill a vacancy that would be left by Crabtree leaving, but I was under the impression that Gerald Owens might move up to 6p and Johansen would be the 4p/5:30p/late night anchor. When Jeff Hogan was hired it was said from the start that he would replace Bill Leslie, but the same has not been said of Brad that I recall.

Interesting - especially since viewers likely assumed Johansen was going to get a full-time anchor role when Crabtree retired.

This is speculation, but I wonder if this opens the door for him to come back to Cincinnati. A little digging on his Twitter feed reveals his high school age daughter is still attending HS in the Cincinnati area. And Kyle Inskeep isn’t terribly captivating at the anchor desk. (They should’ve given that role to Adam Clements, who was very publicly trying out for the role, but I digress.)

It has to be frustrating to leave WKRC after 20+ years (with no Rob Braun retirement in sight) for a lead anchor gig, only to get sidelined a year into it.

  14. Dave LewAllen has been named lead anchor for WXYZ in Detroit replacing Stephen Clark. At 31 years he is their longest tenured anchor/reporter.

So this is their new team going forward:

    Dave LewAllen

    Carolyn Clifford

    Dave Rexroth

    Brad Galli

Nice reversal of trend! But the sports guy needs socks.

  15. I saw on another forum back in '09 that there were rumors that WEWS was thinking of pairing Kimberly Gill with Duane Pohlman for evenings. How would that have worked for a team, and wasn't he up for Ted Henry's spot after his retirement?

I think it could’ve worked. Not sure if it would’ve been enough to turn the ratings, but I’ve always thought Gill should’ve had a better chance there...especially compared to Danita Harris, who I think was best-suited for Good Morning Cleveland.

‘09 was a volatile time for channel 5...it seemed like they were trying all kinds of different pairings around that time. (Even Joy Benedict had some anchor time during that period if I’m remembering correctly.). This was when they started calling themselves “channel 5” outside of newscasts and had a very inconsistent look and feel.

  16. In person Kimberly Gill seems friendly enough... but on air her stiffness really only works in some places and at some stations... she is a good replacement for who she replaced but that’s about all one can say about her...

She isn’t as stiff as Romona Robinson...who was pretty successful in Cleveland. Or Lorna Barrett, the face of a much-stronger WEWS in the 1990s.

But I do think Gill is doing well in Carmen Harlan’s seat at WDIV.

  17. And WEWS should have never ditched Macie Jepson for Jackie Fernandez (pre-ticket scandal).

Agreed. That’s when they decided to go for the Ohio City/hipster/club crowd with promos like this:

And going way back...I still think they made a HUGE mistake ditching Kimberly Gill. Cleveland (and Pittsburgh’s) loss is definitely Detroit’s gain. WEWS should’ve sent to Danita back to mornings in 2009 and put Kimberly in the main slot.

  18. JD Rudd appears to be gone from WEWS. The station is now looking for a new AM meteorologist, along with a temporary part-time one.

Will WEWS ever learn?! They should’ve never ditched Tera Blake for the short-lived duo of Somara Theodore (pre-ticket-scandal) and Jason Nicholas (pre-WOIO). But I guess things worked out for Tera Blake since she’s now at a dominant WKRC instead of a weak WEWS...

  19. Becoming a part-time fill-in/swing position on WTOL or WTVG would be a promotion.

She's already worked at WTOL - she was one of the folks let go during the Cards Against Humanity debacle. Totally agree that she deserves better.
