I don't think that should have led the show, but whatever. I'm actually more curious about the security guards. I'm not familiar with their building but Google street view makes it look like it's a standalone facility. I can understand a large shared building having security, but private security just just for a station? Is this the norm in the top large markets? A temporary things?

And they aren't lowering the price....

I don't follow LA too closely but am curious, in what way is this a "get" for KTTV? Because she was popular years ago at KTLA? Were other LA stations clamoring to hire her or was KTTV the only one interested? Was KTLA even interested in getting her back at all or have they "moved on"?
-
I've watched some of the LA choppers night time protest coverage on Youtube and have been really impressed with the quality, clarity, and brightness of the cameras at night. Must be expensive special cameras compared to other markets.

I don't say this much about people, but he is one of those very old school anchors who has not changed with this times. I wonder how the anchors get chosen. CBS or station's choice? BTW, does anyone know how the production actually happens? Does CBS staff produce the show remotely and then send the content (video/graphics/script) to the local station to load into their system and then produce out of their control room? Or is just a studio camera feed from the station sent to a CBS control room and then the show is assembled there?

TEGNA Broadcasting and Digital General Discussion
PTVNews replied to ABC 7 Denver's topic in Corporate Chat
Can someone explain why/how Soo Kim and Standard General board members would benefit Tegna? I've heard each sides take, but I'm not educated enough to really understand what is going on. Can anyone here give an impartial summary? Seems like many here have a feeling of not liking the direction of Tegna, so any new board member is good....? Or is there something specific Soo Kim/Standard General can bring to the table?- 3735 replies

There may be a tinge of truth to this, but I'd love to hear women's perspective. Maybe as a society people have a subconscious preference for the way we'd like to see a woman appear on TV, and this comment is a manifestation of that. I'm not saying the preference is invalid or not ok, but I've never seen anyone comment on this site about any male anchor not smiling enough.

Interestingly, looks like Tegna has wiped clear their job postings. Only 2 are listed when there are usually dozens. Wonder if it's due to COVID-19 or the acquisition attempts? https://www.jobs.net/jobs/tegna/en-us/all-jobs/- 3735 replies

Here is an example and explanation of KGW's "social distancing" at the start of their 5pm show Monday. They have also ditched their usual 7pm entertainment show for a half hour of responding to viewer questions. They have this new thing as well where people can text in questions to their newsroom phone number.

Except in local TV....lol. Spending "hours each day" building a show is what newsrooms across the country do all day, every day, for multiple shows. It's not unique to networks. News organizations of all types will/do discard those hours of work on a whim to cover breaking news. As for the network news shows tonight (and other times), they did multiple updated live versions across time zones, so the version you saw may not be the same as what someone else saw.

Either the control room set it up wrong or the reporter called in on the wrong number or they switched to a different one without telling the control room.

Interesting idea to move the Evening News to a different time slot, but I'm not sure if it would be better. I imagine most people have heard the news of the day by that point, and are more interested in relaxing with entertainment content before bed, rather than news. I wonder what it would be like if primetime across the country moved from 7pm-10pm, local news 10-11pm, then network news at 11pm, with the late shows at 11:30pm? Anyways, despite whatever reason people may claim is the problem with CBS in the short term, I think it's really much simpler. Do you really think people are not tuning in to CBS because 20 years ago something happened that most people aren't even aware of? I don't think so. While there may be a few specific reasons CBS Evening News is struggling against its competitors, I think it just comes down to the fact that TV news is slowly dying. Yeah, that sucks for "us" as fans or myself personally, it being my career. But society and culture is changing, and TV news is losing out to other methods to get news and to other ways people want to spend their free time. Some organizations are experimenting (Tegna) to see if there is something they can produce that consumers want....maybe they'll strike gold, but currently I don't see that happening. Ultimately, I view TV news like a landline phone. Slowly dying. Some people still have one and enjoy it, but others have dropped it and moved on to other options. Then there's others that will never use one because there are better, more attractive, more convenient options (cell phones, internet), so they will never want a landline. Which means there is almost nothing landline providers can do to attract people unless society/culture shifts in some way to prefer landlines again, which doesn't seem likely.

It seems to me that the new Nexstar copyright has a transition that animates onto the screen, compared to the old version that seemed to be a plain video clip.- 3735 replies

I think there are at least several current Tegna stations that don't use/have the Tegna ID at all except for when it plays during DBL.- 3735 replies

KGW renovated their newsroom a couple years ago and now has a circle "Content Discovery Center" (assignment desk) in the center of the newsroom. You can see a behind the scenes view in this video at 13:27. But this is how it looks on-air at their newsroom cam (@ 5:10):- 3735 replies

Music is bland and unrecognizable. Listen to that open....it goes nowhere. The graphics, like Weeters said, look cheap. The title slate with the logo is way too big! You have to move your eyes across the entire screen to read it. I'm curious about that technical glitch. I'm only speculating....Since it's a repeating video, it made me think maybe some of her on-cam segments were prerecorded to make sure there were no mistakes for the first show. But it's also possible that if this was a technical glitch with the switcher, the camera feed could have been captured and looped with that transition. (But I don't know why/how the switcher would be recording it's own feed like that.)

I know it's small market but that news writing is terrible! Almost as if the anchor is reading the press release itself. Doesn't help that she sounds robotic and bored.

The tease part of that I hadn't fully heard before, but it seams like it's probably just a different portion of the track that is used in the rejoin, which I have heard in a KGW stinger before.- 3735 replies

I think hubs are great. They are very efficient. I've never heard of "channel-in-a-box". What is it and how much "attention" does it need from "existing staff" (who I assume are not MC operators)? I've worked at stations with different hub setups. One was completely hubbed and we never really had any technical issues (at least on air) that made me think it wasn't worth it. Another was a hybrid setup where they had local operators during key portions of the day to do MC duties, but then during overnights and weekends, the hub took over. I don't know why it was hybrid instead of entirely hubbed. At first I thought it was a union thing, but then heard that the MC operators contract had a "no manning" clause, meaning the station was free to hire and fire according to whether there was enough work to do and they weren't required to employ a minimum number of employees. So now I'm guessing the union contract would not prevent going fully hubbed.- 3735 replies

I don't really have complete knowledge of the process but I know at least some stations bring in the DBL feed through their TVU receivers. IDK what path the signal goes before that and/or info about commercial insertion. Guessing it's similar to a network feed where there would be a spot or 2 for local fill.- 3735 replies
