  1. Not sure if the list on the first post is being maintained but there is no longer a news helicopter in Portland. I think it went away around the start of 2022. Before the final chopper went away, all stations had been sharing sharing the video the past few years, but KOIN left the sharing agreement several years earlier and went without one. Before that there were 2 choppers (KGW/KPTV) and KOIN/KATU. And then of course go back far enough into the 2000s when they all had their own.
  2. Nice! I'm not a fan of it in 1A.
  3. Well it's a new day at CNN... -CNN Newsroom International at 4am Eastern debuted with with an updated open and sound. Interestingly there was a lot of co-anchor chit chat between stories which is unusual for CNNI. -Early Start was trying a few new things, one of which was a bad start. Christine Romans was standing at a monitor for pre-show teases. Then they rolled the open, which is only about 4 seconds, and apparently expected her to race back to her seat in that time.....which didn't happen. The open revealed to her just about to sit down. Story count is also higher with dedicated segments to hit stories around the nation/world. (It had a funky name but I can't remember what it was.) -CNN This Morning....overall a pretty good debut so far. A bit of a chat off the top talking about the show's debut. (In contrast to New Day's almost non-existent goodbye). I'm liking the color pallet. Light woods tones. The show open is unique for CNN. Though I'm not liking how the "This Morning" text renders as a result of the 3D lighting effect. The sound is piano based and much more calm than New Day was. The CNN logo has an interesting texture on it. Almost like snakeskin. They have custom post-open tease graphics which are ugly and do not match any other part of the new look. They have also been leaving the anchor mics open as they toss to break letting us hear them chat or whatever. I don't see that effect lasting long. The studio is nice but it's my understanding this is temporary? They did a segment standing at a rectangular counter in an area that I would call "kitchen inspired" with props and such. Dr. Sanjay Gupta was there with a model brain to illustrate a story.
  4. Monday is a holiday.... Halloween. I wondered if that was why haha.
  5. Surprised people still "watch" ads in this day and age. If I've ever been counted in a TV show's ratings by chance, their's a 99% chance I fast forwarded and didn't see any of the ads.
  6. Is one year post merger announcement actually when Tegna can pull out without penalty?
  7. Interesting story. I like the lighter cut for the main theme. Fits better for a midday show. Having the time to commission custom music makes me wonder when did NBC make the decision to launch this show considering the seemingly last minute public announcement.
  8. Oct. 6: Nancy Pelosi sends letter to FCC starting concerns about the deal..... Standard General responds
  9. I've noticed New Day has started doing a new type of pre-produced "Around the world" segment. Gives me CBS Eye Opener vibes.... CNNW_20221005_110000_New_Day_With_John_Berman_and_Brianna_Keilar.mp4
  10. I've seen several station do custom thumbnails. For example KGW and KING. I prefer KGW's as KING's text is too small. I'm actually surprised more stations don't do it.
  11. The 1pm hour is an odd time for affiliates to fill with live news cut-ins. The morning crew normally will have left and the evening crew not yet in. Seems like stations would likely be prerecording something from their morning/noon team...
  12. Jennifer Hudson is definitely on Ellen's set. The main stage looks significantly different but they should have done more changes to the audience side of the studio to make it no look like Ellen. Three of Ellen's old EPs moved over to the show as well.
  13. Tell that to the networks/cable.... I think having different names, so long as the content and presentation is different, is a good thing. It shows differentiation and gives viewers a chance to latch on to a show that they like. If everything is just "x news"....then most people will think, seen it once, seen them all.
  14. I've heard KGW may be replacing Ellen with........ Dateline. Interesting and odd choice as a lead in to a 4pm newscast. But they probably didn't have much to choose from.
  15. TBH, the first caller is my spirit animal. But seriously, if someone tease a story as "next" it better be the first story after the break. It's slightly forgivable if it's second or even third (if the preceding stories are maybe short VOs), but if a story is teased as "next" but is multiple stories later or even several blocks later, it's super annoying. At least some viewers notice if not a lot, and I'd argue it adds to distrust of "the media".
  16. KRCW (Portland) has been airing a few minor league games from the Hillsboro Hops (just outside of Portland) this year. The production values were very simple and the picture quality wasn't great. I only tuned in once and can't remember if they had a TV announcer or if it was just nat sound. I wonder how it was being produced. May have just been the feed that normally streams online? Doubt the TV broadcast was specially produced, but if it was I wonder if they outsourced it or had KOIN staff do it.
  17. What happened?
  18. He's worked at other "major" stations before so the question must be asked why is he doing this? Didn't make it there so trying to do it on his own? I know his health may have been a factor at one point. But making a TV newscast on your own isn't gonna happen. I get the feeling he just likes being on TV or thinks it's impressive to others that he puts out videos....but anyone can do that nowadays with the internet. It was impressive what he did when he was young but why does it seem like he is doing the same type of thing? As others have said, many Youtubers with basic equipment can put out compelling high quality content. Why doesn't he try that instead? He needs to put himself in the shoes of potential viewers and what would be interesting to them. Low quality stolen clips from competitor newscasts is not it. The ratings may never be great, but you could do some interesting stuff. I saw a "drone 53" in one of his videos. If he actually has one, why not take it out daily and broadcast a 5-10 minute flight over an area. That's 10 minutes right there of unique local content which beats out what he's currently doing. That's just one of many ideas I'm randomly thinking of as I write this. If "news" is what he wants to stick to though, why not go to an event of the day and do a 15 minute story on it, even if it's just a long straight interview. At least it'd be on-site and not in "the basement". Use a smartphone to record HD, an external mic, and stabilizer, and the quality right there should be quite good. Wouldn't be too hard to edit in some b-roll, etc to elevate it. I can root for him like others want to, but there are also expectations that someone with his "experience" level (if we can call it that?), should be able to put out better content than this at this point in his career. Which brings us back to the question of....why is he doing this?
  19. I feel like... 10% bad for him. News seems to be his passion and I wish the guy luck, but he's been in the biz for decades now. He started in his teens with public access "news" programs. Which for being a teen, was impressive. He even got his show posted on NMSA under "Rose City News". But...he's not a teen anymore and he's since had multiple stints at professional stations in various positions. So he's more than had enough time to bring his skills up to snuff. If this is what he's putting out, the criticism is deserved.
  20. Only if they actually watch it though, right? I DVR a lot of news programs but only watch a select few. I do so just in case I hear of something of interest that happened on one, I can go back and look for it.
  21. I wish he'd come back to Portland! But KGW just hired a replacement for the original Joe Donlon replacement who left last summer. (And there's no other apparent openings elsewhere in the market that he'd fit into.) But I hear Joe has people already knocking on his door, so I wouldn't be worried for him. He made the choice not to renew his contract, so idk if I'd expect to see him on a Nexstar property. But who knows...
  22. Reading through the posted docs, looks like Standard General is trying to get special permission from the FCC for the deal due to the percentage of funding being considered "foreign" is higher than regulations allowed. Standard General is arguing that it's not really foreign, just money in foreign accounts controlled by US citizens. Anyone know if this will be a sticking point, or easy approval on this matter?
  23. Some more context about the deal: https://www.poynter.org/business-work/2022/tegna-standard-general-sale-local-tv/
  24. That's more than just a quirk. It's bad implementation.
  25. That voiceover sounds like the automated female caption voice from Instagram.
