NBC "NFL '81" opening (really bad video quality)
-
Yep, it happened (if you're referring to "mrwrestlingtape1," which I believe you are). What I don't understand is what the NFL has against its past. Whatever it is, it isn't good. I'm surprised that the NBA has not chased off all those clips of when CBS had it. There are tons of CBS NBA clips around YouTube, and virtually no one at the NBA has said anything of them. Why does the NBA seem to care about its past while the NFL doesn't? It's a mystery to me.

It was pretty good, I thought. I only sampled it up to the part where the actual titles occurred, but I have to say that I actually liked this 1990 opening. I don't think that Brent lost any of his verve. The best part was where the animated football formed and was then kicked towards the title, lighting it up and creating the title card. Unfortunately, considering what the NFL did to "mrwrestlingtape1" (that person had to take down all those old NFL clips, no thanks to Roger Goodell of the "No Fun League"), the bigwigs that run "ESPN on ABC" will probably find a way to take this clip down. It virtually never fails.

Here it is:

I saw that opening, and several others from the page of which it is a part (wpdehistory), and while the aforementioned opening was good, one of the best (at least in my opinion) was the 1990 opening of "Action News 15." Not only was the opening music top-notch, but the opening announcement (by, I believe, Charlie Van Dyke) was short and sweet-- no beating around the bush: "Now...from the eastern Carolinas' live news leader...this is WPDE's Action News 15." The opening seemed to reflect the station ID jingle, "Action News Is Everywhere," with visuals that showed WPDE's news team all around the area putting a newscast together, reporting from different places in the area, etc. Here's the clip:

This clip is of Ara Parseghian with Brent Musburger on a program called "The NCAA Today" from 1982; apparently, as far as content and format were concerned, this was the precursor to "The Prudential College Football Report" that Jim Nantz would present starting in 1985 (if I'm not incorrect, the "College Football Report" gave Jim Nantz his start at CBS Sports, according to Nantz's recent book).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcL1uHmNaRE 1979 "NFL Today" scores and highlights. This is before the days of fancy computer graphics for halftime reports (and I believe that this is a halftime report). The scores are shown full-screen, but instead of fancy computer graphics between score reports, as Brent announces the scores, the camera simply pans to each display. The individual gameboards, it seems, were also operated mechanically. One other thing-- this is (I believe) when NFL halftime shows were not sponsored by anybody. In other words, this is way before the days of Visa, Dockers, NASDAQ-AMEX, and Sprint. The studio was also called "CBS Sports Control." You'll also see Jayne Kennedy in this clip on the left, and here, Irv Cross and Jimmy "The Greek" are seated to the right (all those placements are from our view, the way that you would have seen it on television).
