  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fKSUsE8Jg4 NBC Sports "NFL '82" opening (from the AFC Super Bowl Tournament; in case you don't know, this unusual playoff format was used in the '82 season because of the strike that year)
  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgf8SQVpaeE ABC "Monday Night Football" opening 1980: Tampa Bay vs. Chicago
  3. I actually thought to look for that for you, but couldn't find it under either of those two names. Here's something else I think you'll like though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BDD60wcScc This is the opening from "The NFL Today" from the 1982 NFC Final, 1/22/83, between Dallas and Washington from RFK Stadium.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZxie0jv3s This CBS NFL clip from '85 has the opening of a game between Atlanta and Chicago from Soldier Field. Not only does it have that, but it also has a gamebreak with Brent Musburger that details the big hit laid on Detroit QB Eric Hipple. You'll never believe how brutal this hit is-- that defender just laid him out.
  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBGAK3RNd7M 1987: Clips from network newscasts and "20/20" on the rescue of Jessica McClure from the well in Midland, TX. When the clip gets to the "20/20" segment, look for the NCI captioning icon in the bottom right during the opening. This clip also has Hugh and Barbara signing off, and Barbara saying "We are in touch, so you be in touch." The ending was very good, I thought, with an image of the Earth turning into the spinning globe of ABC News. Superimposed over the globe are the words "Expect the world of ABC News."
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLe_SiKYxIM This is a 1979 ABC MNF opening, from a game between the old Houston Oilers and the Miami Dolphins.
  7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14J8cH5Xzu8 This is a CBS "Sunday Morning" opening from 1989, in tribute to the fact that the program, on that Sunday, according to Charles Kuralt, was starting its 10th season. Not only is that opening included, but part of the first opening from 1/28/79 is also included; in that, Kuralt explained what the general format of the program would be like.
  8. This is a Prudential "At The Half" segment from a CBS NBA game between the L.A. Lakers and Philly, 2/22/87. Take a close look at the opening-- the graphics remind me of the billboard that Don Robertson delivered for "The Prudential College Football Report" when Jim Nantz presented it (with the golden frame quickly snapping into place and the CBS Sports horizontal logo in the middle of that frame); only this time, Pat O'Brien is the presenter, the name of the segment is changed to "At the Half," and the CBS NBA music is used for the opening. When this opening was used for the "College Football Report" in 1985, it had this scary-sounding music that seemed to have been a derivative of the College Football theme at that time. It was, however, modified for the 1987 season to use a short cut of the current CBS College Football theme, I believe.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0d3o-b29FrE This clip from 1987 includes an "NFL Today" halftime report with Brent Musburger and Dick Vermeil, plus some halftime analysis of the Philly/Washington game from Verne Lundquist and John Madden. The video is somewhat shaky, I believe.
  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRvuogTeUSQ This is ABC's '86 college football opening, from a game between Georgia and Clemson from Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA. It is somewhat cut off at the beginning.
  11. This “NFL Today” opening is from the 1988 NFC final between S.F. and Chicago, 1/8/89. Watch for a treat towards the end-- after the opening, the chopper people, as they are trying to get a beauty shot of the Chicago skyline, are out of position over Lake Michigan, and frantically have to attempt to get back into position as the “NFL Today” title moves into position at the top of the screen for Don Robertson’s billboard; the chopper’s attempt to assume the correct position for the skyline shot would only make the audience kind of dizzy. Fortunately, the skyline shot problem is rectified by the time that Don introduces Brent “live from Soldier Field in Chicago.” At this time, the studio show still had the long-established Brent Musburger and Irv Cross, but Phyllis George was long gone, and Jimmy “The Greek” was fired in the 1987-88 season, I believe. Instead, in their places were the late Will McDonough and Chicago Bears great Dick Butkus. Look for their portions of the opening; you’ll notice Will and Dick by the fact that the lettering used for their names had virtually no depth to it. Dick’s intro, although lacking depth in the lettering, was similar to that of Jimmy “The Greek.” This would be the last time that CBS would use its “computer robot” opening for “The NFL Today,” as NBC broadcast SB XXIII 1/22/89, two weeks later. Next season (1989-90), CBS would adopt the short-lived opening that was previously posted here. At the time of this broadcast from Chicago, it was only 10° outside, with a wind-chill factor of -33°. The winds were blowing pretty hard too. Here’s the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM_TdigniGk
