And here it is! Someone must've listened 😄

That is something else! Love the circle with today's peacock, stars and "Cable 6 WCNC-TV" against the diagonal lined background, and how the News 36 title seemed to leap through the circle, and how the circle filled in with blue as the News 36 title assumed its position in the center, among other things.

  2. And one other thing I'd like to say about that huge video of NBC News graphics I posted recently: IMO, the best one was the first one, that for Today (because of how the first vestiges of Today's sunrise icon peeked over the Earth as the continent animation appeared, and then a bright aura/shine appeared from the center of that sun as the NBC News Today title wiped in, with the sunrise completing itself when the title appeared in full and Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley were billed by the late NBC announcer Fred Facey...

"From NBC News, this is Today...with Bryant Gumbel...and Jane Pauley."

    KJAC 1981/2 Newscasts

Love the Just Watch Us Now (NBC 1982-83 season campaign) instrumental on the end titles of that 1982 KJAC evening edition (that evening edition, or part thereof, taking up approximately the first third of this montage).

For me, I liked the format of the early Prime Time KCAL news block. The 8p hour was designated as the California Report, the 9p hour was the World Report and the 10p was the normal local broadcast.

Perfect setup on that station in the City of Angels!

  5. How about Nightside, which was part of KNBC in L.A. for many years, under many overall brandings (NewsCenter 4, News 4 LA and Channel 4 News are the ones I remember it being used for); it was also used for many other stations of various affiliations, but that would turn this into a list.

  6. What is one of your favorite specialty titles that any station has/has had for a newscast?

By specialty titles, I'm specifically excluding the titles that were/are used overall for stations' operations (Eyewitness News, Action News and the like), and also the time of day titles (at 6, 10 P.M., etc.).

That said, specialty titles refer to those titles which are/have been used for specific dayparts (an example of one of these is Nightdesk, which, IIRC, was used for many years on WBRZ Channel 2 [ABC in Baton Rouge, LA]) within their Eyewitness News branding as a late edition subtitle; I don't know if this was used as a subtitle within any other overall branding on that Louisiana ABC station.

Also, to not have this a list thread, only one example per person per answer (multiple answers are allowed, but only one example per answer).

  7. Something I'd like to know concerning the News Music Search Archive (and it's something that bothers me a good bit about it)...

Why is it set up to where if you click on any audio sample, it automatically plays at the highest volume possible, unless lowered to a safer volume? The reason that bothers me is that when I want to explore the tracks of another station or any specific track of any station, it automatically resets to high volume, and I have to find a way to turn it down.

I also noticed on the News Music Search Archive that KOLD-TV 13 in Tucson, AZ used TM's classic "Spirit" music package back in 1987. However, I looked on YouTube and could not find a video using the theme.

A newscast, news open or anything would be good.

And I discovered also that WCNC (NBC in Charlotte, NC) had "Real News" from 1989-96, but similarly, could not find visual evidence of anything using that music. I do like Charlie Van Dyke's billing on the first clip using that music (a 1989 early edition opening): "And now, Charlotte's first news...with Jesse Johnson....Tom Miller....Dr. Joe Conway with outdoor weather...and Jim Celania on sports. This is News 36 at 5:30."

Aside from the Dodgers, I’m sure his famous moment came when he was the play by play announcer for the 1986 World Series on NBC, Especially when it came to game 6. After Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner botched that famous catch resulting in the Mets winning it, Scully uttered a more famous quote three minutes after that moment that went:

”If One picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words”, and there’s more to that quote.

And I think the other thing he said was, "But more than that-- you have seen an absolutely bizarre finish to Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets are not only alive, they are well, and they will play the Red Sox in Game 7 tomorrow."

  10.

From WJZ in Baltimore, Jan. 2, 1995, on the day of the network switch in Charm City (WJZ now with CBS, WBAL back with NBC [11 had moved to CBS in 1981, as I remember it, but came back to NBC here], and WMAR now with ABC): a fun and informative deep dive into why this switch was made, and how it affected mostly where viewers would see their favorite shows; look at the 20:29 mark for a BTS shot that is hardly ever seen, and that is on 60 Minutes, where we see what the correspondent looks at (here, the late Ed Bradley) when he or she sits in front of that simulated magazine backdrop (the correspondent sees an image of himself/herself in front of the simulated magazine backdrop, and there are lights around and a small table in front of him/her); 60 Minutes would of course be at 13, where it still is today.

I found the the second audio clip and sent it to NMSA. I've been looking for videos of the opening. I've got a contact who has a lot of videos from this time period and he will be adding those soon hopefully.

Would love to see that-- thanks for the response! I noticed the studio from that period on WTVQ, and it whets my whistle.

  12. Was just listening to the entries for Brave New World on WTVQ Channel 36 (ABC in Lexington, KY) on the News Music Search Archive, and there are two opens listed that used that, both for NewsChannel 36, both for evening editions, and both w/Chris Clausen the announcer.

On the first one (from 1992) he bills the anchor team for NewsChannel 36 at 6 as "Central Kentucky's most experienced anchor team," and bills Brad James "with weather," and Kenny Rice "with sports."

On the second one (don't know when that one was from), he bills the newscast as being "From the heart of the Bluegrass," bills it as NewsChannel 36: The 6:00 Report, and bills Brad James "with the weather," and Kenny Rice "on sports."

Why the change in billing from the 1992 opening to that later one?

So they basically just did what MSNBC did. They dumped the tickers as well.

Outside of Bret Baier and Fox News Sunday, their programming has been mostly talk/personality shows for a while. The “newsroom” shows have always been slanted to the right (not explicitly, but in terms of story selection). I don’t like Fox News (or any other American cable news channel for that matter,) but I’m not sure this counts as a drastic change from what they’ve been doing before.

Apparently, based on reactions to my post and this post, I was incorrect-- FOX has not entirely dispensed with the tickers; there is one on Your World with Neil Cavuto.
