Citadel would be a once-in-a-forever opportunity to buy into a bunch of Iowa markets at once. I wonder if Meredith would consider buying Citadel, for that reason alone.

Former WTLV morning/noon anchor Sally Fox died on July 3 at the age of 58. She was at the station from 1988 to 1995, and while anchoring also founded a concern that runs group homes for the disabled, Angelwood, Inc. A couple ancillary items: -The graphic accompanying the article is from 1991, and it uses a 12 bug that is associated with their 1992-93 image. Looks like the "1992" theme debuted in 1991, and we know as of this week that the "1991" theme debuted in 1989 (or the fall of 1988, when WTLV returned to NBC after eight years with ABC). -The TVSpy article about Fox's death implies that Fox worked at WJXX, when WJXX wasn't on the air until 1997 or connected to WTLV until 2000.

KESQ moved last month into the old KPSP studios, which were remodeled to house separate operations for both stations. So what does an empty studio look like? (The studio switch occurred on June 26; to the relief of all, KESQ is keeping PNP.)

There's an email in Mr. NMSA's inbox about all that. I really like that WTLV theme too. It's truly something. I wonder who composed it...

For once, new stuff in the NewsActive3 collection. WPBF 1992, a cool WJXT "Program Note" slide, a WTLV 1991 Theme close at 12:35 (which is from 1989!), and a higher-quality cut of the (non-NMSA) KTUU 1990 News Theme are some of the highlights.

More Joplin KODE 1992 update: (this is a new one!*) KODE 1994 promos with another news theme (is this the mythical Interaction?): *The NMSA (which has a Joplin reliability rating of nearly 0) says this might be a Gari package called Your TV Friend, at least if the dates hold. But I don't think that even exists. (Any coincidence that KSNF was using Turn To resings with the line "Your TV Friend, KSN"?)

This graphics company did a lot of work for some big clients. You'll recognize WBBM, KCBS, the ABC and CBS networks plus Australia's Network Ten. Also, more Where's the Walrus!

For the second straight day, KSEE in Fresno has let go of an anchor. On Monday, it was their noon anchor; the next day, one of their morning personalities—who had been at the station for 28 years—was handed the axe. Looks like Nexstar's consolidation between KSEE and KGPE has reached the on-air talent (several reporting and other departments are already consolidating; production employees could take a while to combine because KSEE, unlike KGPE, has unionized production staffers).

revin hatol does that. That open looks more like 1983, and while it does have a common musical signature with 1990, the instrumentation is a little older.
-
A large basket of promos from WJZ, 1982-86. This image campaign was by JAM and accompanied "The News Leader" news package (which has the same "It's A Good Feeling to Know" signature):
-
Oh please! We don't have that theme at all!
-
This does sound sorta Mannheim Steamroller-y. The portion around :20 reminds me of their version of Classical Gas (which WKEF picked up and used in the late 80s and early 90s as their news theme). Jeffrey, check your PMs—I think I've hit another news theme find in the SESAC repertoire.

KSHB didn't start a full news department until 1993, but from 1985 to the late 1980s they ran a 15-minute 10pm newscast, 41 Express. This open is a real treat: music, voiceover, TVbD graphics. The animation actually appears in one of the TVbD demos.

There are some interlocking Hello/Great News combo cuts, I think. From KGGM Albuquerque (now KRQE)...it's Christmas in June?
-
That is some colorful open! And Rick Krizman's 24 Hour News! Also, WCMH 1992 (with an unknown news theme!):
-
Wow. Let's hope Media General can put some money into KLFY post-merger.
-
Ooh boy! *licks lips* KTSP Daybreak with Pinnacle, 1993: KTSP noon with a new theme (!), 1990: KTSP was not using its "1989 News Theme" (which was only for Nightcast) on its other newscasts. I can say I've never heard this one before.

Almost exactly like KMGH—music, graphics (except for color), animation are a dead ringer. I'm now wondering how long KOLD used the TheNews name and if they ever used anything close to this. Also from Maclovio's account, some really cheesy KENS promos from 1976 (probably not 1975). The last one, with its depictions of Native Americans and smoke signals, could never fly today:

It's not often that a rival news anchor says hi to another station's camera—and it goes out on air. WFMY, 1984; our trespasser is WGHP's Neill McNeill:

KOTA 1996 News Theme by JAM Productions (for Close Up), WGHP 1984 News Theme (for everything else). Incredible find. That means that that KOTA theme is much, much earlier. *** KVOA, KGUN, SIN and so much more from Tucson in 1980! KVOA's using Cool Hand Luke, KGUN has a close theme beginning at 16:55, and a couple seconds of a KOLD close using the McGraw-Hill style "TheNews" name.

A WSNS sales presentation from late 1985. The station had just shed its subscription television service and switched to full-time Spanish. (The presentation is in English, however.) There's a news open at :40 in. The theme for the news open is Network Music's Energy II. *** WISH 1989 morning open. NewsCenter II + Dude Walker VO (which the NMSA doesn't credit...he's pretty young here) + that stripe transition that a bunch of Pulitzer stations were using: WISH 1997 morning open. Still using Newsleader, but the look of the station had definitely changed since the early part of the decade. Note the female VO, too: Also, a close from 1992. The "Back Home Again in Indiana" melody is fairly easy to pick out here, plus Newsleader is one of my personal favorite packages: *** WTVY 1993/94 (We'll Take You There) at 2:12:

Good one. Back when KTVK was actually a decent outlet for news. They try, but they...just feel bland.
-
They also had a Turn To re-sing as "Your TV Friend, KSN" (at least the end part), so I had some idea that was coming. That's not on YT again yet. That makes me question the KODE entry for a "Your TV Friend" package by Gari. Did that ever exist for KODE?

The only KSNT video footage from the 1980s we have is from the Television by Design era (it's in the same NewsActive3 reel as that WIBW stuff from the late 80s). By 1993, they were retaining their 1986 logo but had broken off with their own presentation and music.

KSNF 10pm, May 25, 1992: (A block missing but it has a close) Interesting to see how KSNF was branding at this time. In 1990, SJL Communications bought the Kansas State Network and cut costs by severing the microwave link between Wichita and Topeka and Joplin. While their Wichita (and Topeka) outlets had rolled out new logos in 1986 and slick Television by Design graphics in 1988, their Joplin station was using a modestly updated version of the network's mid-80s branding, complete with old "KSN" logo and that yellow-orange-blue stripe pattern.
