  1. Now to make folks (somewhat) happy... Here's what Raymie is looking for - I apologize for the low resolution, but the larger format is an AVI file that I need to find the Codec for - it just shows up as "green lines" on the screen, and my video editing software just gives me a black screen...

    Cue the Deathstar...

Live from KPNX, Channel 12 - Your choice for Real Life, Real News in the 90s - Kent Dana, Jineane Ford, Bill Austin weather, and Bill Denney's Sports - 12 News Tonight

    Then...

I'll take your wolf's howl and eagle screech and raise you a retiree's "Thwack" of a golf ball at 6am!

    Enjoy!

  2. I'm not in support of the merger, but I will say one thing about the commentaries from Sinclair - at least they don't make it look like it's a part of the newscast - different graphics, theme, look, etc. If you like the news on Sinclair's Local 37, but don't like the commentaries - perfect time to visit the crapper, walk the dog, or whatever makes you happy.

  3. KHBS/KHOG is adding a weekend 5pm newscast on Saturdays and Sundays on their 2nd digital subchannel (also known as Arkansas CW)

    http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/107324/arkansas-cw-launches-weekend-5-pm-news

It'll launch this Saturday, September 23rd and it'll utilize the award-winning newsgathering resources from local ABC affiliate and sister station 40/29 TV, the 5:00 p.m. weekend newscast...

Basically, with ABC in College Football mode on Saturdays and ABC Sports on Sundays (which could run long), I'm guessing they got tired of the "will it or won't it air", and just is running on the CW, which we all know, is rife with potential program blocking concerns...

KPIX (San Francisco, CA) July 16, 1992 10:00pm - This was during KCRA and KRON's test of early Prime Time on the west coast starting at 7pm. KCRA and KRON had FCC approval for the early start, so they ran a traditional 35 minute 10pm newscast and the Tonight Show starting at 10:35. KPIX made the switch to early start also, but was not approved by the FCC (and IIRC, outright told "No, they couldn't run Letterman early), so they ended up with a one-hour newscast at 10pm followed by Letterman at 11pm. KGO and KTVU stuck with the traditional 8pm start time, so program ratings were all over the place during this timeframe.

  12. See if you can find any KPNX from 1992-93 -- that era is RARE!

I'm digging... Right now, I have 32 cases, each with 10 DVDs (3-4 newscasts per DVD) sitting on the desk to migrate from DVD to a Hard Drive. I've been through 12 (not in the 32 above) already - a nice tedious process, but when all is said and done, I'll have everything stored (at least) 4 ways: CD/DVD, Server Storage, Upload to Vimeo, and external hard drive (which will probably end up at my parents), and a possible second one elsewhere for safekeeping... Now the question - do I upgrade my Vimeo account so that I can upload more than 5GB/week? (about 10-11 videos...) More are in boxes...

Update: just found another 34 cases in a box upstairs... Lots of newscasts!!!!

  14. The hits keep on coming! No Phoenix news material but the KNXV promos are a nice bonus and the regional Satellite News Channel stuff is pretty darn rare.

I'll see what I can find in my archives from Phoenix - definitely have some 90s KNAZ coming soon. (Unfortunately nothing new can be uploaded until Monday...)

  16. Two more - I'm getting stuff uploaded to Vimeo as quickly as I can, until I hit my weekly limit...

WMAQ Chicago, August 1, 1994, 6:00 pm. Storms were rumbling through Chicago and something went awry in the WMAQ control room, resulting in "Non-Stop News, Weather and Sports" - no commercials (though they were able to get 1 commercial to run before "Married with Children" started). (I was stuck under the bleachers at Wrigley that night...)

WTTA Tampa/St. Petersburg, March 23, 2006, 10pm. This aired about 1 week before Sinclair pulled the plug on News Central. WTTA had just hired Wendy Brockman from Denver (KWGN), when everything was shut down.

  17. KSTF used to have news programs, later changed to inserts and eventually phased out. So this is not a "new" service historically speaking.

Scottsbluff viewers get a KGWN satellite, a KNOP satellite, and a KOTA satellite, plus the Nebraska PBS state network. Fox is not available OTA but KLWY claims Scottsbluff. That is essentially its own market.

Yeah, we need a redraw of the DMAs here.

KSTF had separate news programs, as stated, but the effectively died in the 90s. Can't forget that KDUH (predecessor to KNEP) had local news through the early 2000s - with KOTA newscasts gradually phased in. The last full local newscasts on KDUH were at noon, but were titled KOTA territory news (just have to find the DVD to see if it mentioned Scottsbluff in the title).

Plus I giggle when you notice that Gray effectively owns the region through 3 distinct out-of-market stations they own, save PBS. I'm surprised they haven't slipped a Fox affiliation in there...

    J

  18. May as well call it now. Heck, Nexstar will probably pick up WHDF and KTEN as well. If Lockwood plans on leaving the business altogether. But if Tegna got it, they could get KTEN and WSKY in a package deal. WSKY could create a duopoly with WVEC. (That may need additional vetting however to make sure Norfolk can support another duopoly.)

Nexstar can't pick up WHDF - not enough full power stations in the market (unless they can pull a failing station stunt).

  19.

I agree - I see more Northern Virginia suburban news on WDVM than I do on the other stations... Granted a lot of the stories are short SOT, but still better than what we get from 4/5/7/8/9/14/25/50...

    J

    Interesting - I now have 2 channel 811s:

The first 811 is HSNHD, and the second is WDVMHD - and both have the correct programs as listed in the guide...

Curious if this is happening in other parts of the market?

Also need to officially update the local DC-based stations news list: 4/5/7/8/9/14/20/25/50...

(If I throw in what I get over the air, it becomes: 2/4/5/7/8/9/11/11.2/13/14/20/25/45/50 - just not including the other 25 in the market - WDVM...)

    Jim

  20. I received additional word from WDVM on coverage and Comcast gave them the most bullshit excuse for not carrying them in Loudoun County. It’s mind boggling..WDVM actually provides a valuable service to loudoun..UNLIKE WMDE which they must carry..

    Mr. Walker,

I do not have good news here. We are told by Comcast that they do not have the bandwith necessary to carry WDVM-TV in Loudoun County at this time. We will continue in our efforts.

WDVM-TV is available on Verizon FIOS and DISH Network in Loudoun County.

What a load of crap, on Comcast's response. They don't want to upset the viewers of Sewing Channel 6 in HD...

Last go round of "Must Carry", I'm sure WHAG opted out, so as not to compete directly with WRC in DC itself. I wonder when they can force the issue?

I agree - I see more Northern Virginia suburban news on WDVM than I do on the other stations... Granted a lot of the stories are short SOT, but still better than what we get from 4/5/7/8/9/14/25/50...

    J

  21. Where do you work/live bud? As of this posting, 811 is still HSN here in Ashburn (Loudoun County) .

Arlington County. WDVM isn't on in the 1000s yet, but took over HSN on 811 and in SD (clipped) on 24. I figured Loudoun would have it before Arlington would...

It's listed as H+I in the guide (but there's also H+I on WDCA 20.2...)

    Jim

  22. I hope they launch here in loudoun Comcast soon! Comcast here is weird as it is segmented unlike Fios which generally covers a DMA. For instance, there is comcast of reston (which has WDVM) and there is loudoun county Comcast (which does not carry it as of yet). Kind of backwards if you ask me as loudoun houses some of the key NOVA demo they are reaching out to...

    Check your lineup...

I was at work today and was playing TV Channel roulette in the break room and saw Channel 811 was listed as H+I and had "WHAG News" at 5pm. I cut out of work a few minutes early and headed home and yup, WDVM is now on 811. Not sure where HSN is now... My PC still says the channel is HSN, but the programming is WDVM.

In one of the leadins during the 5pm newscast, the VO was "Covering Hagerstown, Frederick, Alexandria, and Winchester, you're watching WDVM News, your local news leader". Pushing the NoVa coverage... (Next leadin had Hagerstown, Martinsburg, Leesburg, and Silver Spring)

It'll be interesting to see how they promote in as well as cover the local area...

    5pm - Regional News

    5:30pm - West Virginia Tonight

    6:00pm - Local (Hagerstown/WV Panhandle) news

    7:00pm - Northern Virginia News

    7:30pm - I-270 News (Frederick/Monthgomery counties)

Also, the FCC database has been updated with the new call sign (yesterday - Sunday - it still had WHAG in the database)

    Interesting...

  23. We've had WDVM/WHAG on Fios for a few days now, but only in SD on channel 31, and I gotta say I do enjoy hearing about different stories you won't hear on the big 4 in DC, plus I have family in West Virginia so WV Tonight Live is a good resource to hearing about news in their area.

I drove up from Arlington to Hagerstown to record the last newscast on WHAG. It appeared that the 10pm was live, but the 11pm NoVa News seemed to be taped (10pm anchors and stories mentioned 10pm, whereas 11pm didn't mention a time) and had a slightly different feel. No promotion of the change except one reference of "for the last time" during the open, a reference to the new website near the end, and the same promo already posted run a few times. Everything else (promos during the newscast) still was referencing "WHAG News" and "Your4State.com". I can see them dropping the Pennsyvania coverage, since Comcast dropped/is dropping the station in PA (receivable OTA, but not in market)... (But Comcast doesn't' carry the station in DC Northern Virginia Suburbs...)

IMHO! The graphics need a little work - the WHAG/your4state.com rotating bug looks weird over no background, as do the Facebook/Twitter/other social media links,

I can see them going for full market coverage - the weather included down to Woodbridge, and stories included Fairfax and Springfield as well as the Winchester area.
