WABC also is broadcasting live, why not use their own sister station??????  Note the only NYC station that is not covering this live is WNYW FOX5.  CBS2, NBC4, ABC7 and PIX11 are all live.  I guess Fox values Dish Nation higher than breaking news.

"Flying transportation machine flew into a building in New York City? Nah, not a big deal. I doubt people would be interested in that. Not like the city would still be sensitive to the idea of flying machines flying into buildings or anything. Carry on (but let me know if someone dies)."

Get ready for Stadium SportsNet. And don't be surprised if they work overtime to make the Stadium the primary .2 in all Sinclair markets (and drop the alternate feeds since the Stadium digital subchannels can serve as a backup) when ATSC 3.0 comes a-knockin'!

Will FSN be required to run Boris? I see it now. "Halftime with Boris."

  3. KSHB's general manager resigned on Thursday after 6 years. Her last day is June 2. She probably would've been fired had she not resigned. There were two racial discrimination lawsuits (in short succession) that the station partially (but not totally) was found at fault for, the husband-wife anchor duo suddenly resigning, as well as numerous other turnover during her tenure. No one really wanted to stay there.

FTVLive saying the station "decided to part ways" with the two is a stretch at best (but what else is new for him?). They have three kids that are all like, under the age of 5. They both worked primetime in TV news. How they ever had time to be with their kids is a mystery to me. Good for them though focusing on their children. I'm sure it was tough working their schedule with such young children.

I remember a time when KCTV had no sports, or outsourced sports. Now they're throwing resources into a nightly sports show on KSMO.

Ahhh yes! Metro Sports. Those were the days.

Steve Kamer's the name. He's done some local news work, including KCAL; I believe he's also the voice of the YES Network too.

Ironic, considering it was TVbD that created WOIO/WUAB's "Cleveland Television News" look in 1995-96:

Oh man, I wish they had brought back that 19 typeface for a second life.

    Oh and NO orange...

Orange is fine if implemented properly and in the correct region (desert, tropics). Scripps V1 wasn't implemented properly.

WXYZ has begun running promos for “7 Action News at 4pm”... looks like somebody got the memo about “The NOW” and it’s going bye bye...

99% chance I'm rading too much into this, but is The Now actually getting the axe?

It's actually kind of a parallel for the people that made it, too. RenderOn is very clearly a shop that has gotten behind the curve in their work. It's also been two years since they did any broadcast work, a revamp for KLAS.

Two years? What have they been doing then?

Let's be clear, though. The Scripps package was inexpensive because it's not an original design. It's a reworked Renderon IndiaTV package - https://www.renderon.com/#/india-tv/

Well I'll be damned. Never knew that. Now I look at the Scripps pkg and see something bastardized.

Scripps really likes using Renderon (do they still exist?) I’m interested in seeing what they would look like.

RenderON tends to be flashy, so I'm curious to see how they would do a "flat" look.

Glad to hear they're finally moving on with new graphics. The ripoff of the 2011 CNN look hasn't aged that well.

You're probably the first person I've heard say that. They were good enough and aged well enough that multiple stations were trying to copy the look years after it came out.

I recently moved stations and my ep said last year news managers at stations were asked to listen to music samples. So if or when new graphics come I almost guarantee new music will come.

Also, interesting to note, my station doesn’t have have VizRT. We are still running with Chryon

Fascinating, so there is some input from the stations (though I don't really expect news managers to have in-depth musical analysis skills).

We're barely a week into the year. If there will be new graphics this year, they've got plenty of time.

Rumor is they didn't even start the preliminary process of getting new graphics until late fall. So it probably wouldn't happen until summer or fall 2019 at the earliest.

I'm actually very curious to know how this process works. Do they go to a company and say "hey, pimp my VizRT," and let them work their magic coming back with several concepts, or do they go to them with a set idea in mind and then tweak it as it's developed? Do they consult the stations (I highly doubt it) and ask opinions?

Now might be a good time, with those 2 new stations (which they can use to pilot the new graphics) plus the Cordillera stations coming soon. Plus, the current Scripps graphics are quite old although they have aged well. Maybe just do a Hearst-like tweak of them rather than a total makeover?

There have been very subtle changes over the years, but I wouldn't mind seeing a complete makeover. That's probably more in line with Scripps' style.

What's stopping Hearst from just buying KLKN? Lombardo still wants out, right?

I don't want to anger the gods mods by getting so far off topic so I'll leave at this, but no not really. Lombardo is still making some money off of two of his three stations. If someone came up and offered him enough cash, sure he'd probably do it, but right now he seems to be content until he dies. Those Citadel stations would benefit greatly from a new owner though.

KMTV has been lost for years.  The problem is that WOWT and KETV are able to pad their Omaha market viewership, and ad revenue, with significant viewership in the Lincoln market (due to relatively weak affiliates), while KMTV gets major pushback from KOLN.

KETV isn't available in much of the Lincoln market, specifically in the counties that border the DMAs. KLKN/Citadel has made sure of that. I believe KETV was recently taken off of Spectrum lineups in favor of KLKN exclusively (before you could get both). You can probably pull them in over the air, otherwise it's unlikely you'll get them. KETV/Hearst detest the very existence of KLKN because they take viewers and ad revenue that would otherwise go to them. The two affiliates don't talk to each other.

KMTV doesn't really go out their way to try and complete with KOLN.

According to FTVLive, Thompson, Wallace and Lamb are out!!

Tribune has been offering buyouts to some of their higher price talent.

At Kansas City’s WDAF, sources tell FTVLive that a number of staffers have accepted the buyouts and will be leaving the station.

Sources say that longtime WDAF Meteorologist Mike Thompson, along with longtime sports director Al Wallace and longtime sports reporter Jason Lamb have all accepted the buyots.

It appears that WDAF will have no sports department as of Dec. 31st with the loss of Wllace and Lamb.

    Wow! That's astonishing.

  16. I know most won't have a WSJ subscription, but the meat of the article is what you would expect.

More than 1 million consumers canceled their cable-TV or satellite subscriptions in the past quarter, one of the largest seasonal drops ever, stepping up pressure on pay-TV providers to generate revenue elsewhere.

Old-guard companies have turned to streaming services and partnerships with digital video startups to stanch the loss of pay-TV subscribers, yet figures reviewed by The Wall Street Journal show that those tactics have failed to halt the erosion of what used to be one of the entertainment industry’s most profitable businesses.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/outlook-for-traditional-tv-goes-from-bad-to-worse-1542632401?mod=hp_lead_pos3

People are cancelling because they're charging so damn much. It's a negative feedback loop. You raise prices, someone can't afford it so they drop it, cable companies lose money so they feel the need (I won't say 'have') to raise prices, someone can't afford it...

I'm pretty young (early 20s). Most people my age don't have cable and the number one reason why is it's too expensive.

What isn't being discussed, though, is that some people are buying streaming platforms that sometimes they're paying nearly as much if they just had cable. The difference is that they can cancel it whenever and bring it back whenever, no problem. Others refuse to pay. Why? Because it's too expensive.

  17. I agree with Weeters, it's also not just as simple as "we're breaking into programming," if WEWS is hubbed as far as master control, you would have to contact them and let them know you're breaking into programming. On top of that, the network will need to be informed you are breaking into their programming to deliver breaking news and find out if there will be a special re-air or if you're just plain SOL. In the case of soap opera viewers, you DO NOT mess with their soaps unless there is actual cause for concern. A simple crawl and heavy social media presence is good enough in this day and age. If they waited and broke into WWTBAM, they can do so because that is their syndicated slot and syndications can be reaired later. However, why would we risk potential local ad revenue for breaking news about something that ended up being nothing.

Furthermore, like Weeters said, it's better to know all the facts and have things confirmed than to break into programming and have no idea what you're talking about.

Working on an assignment desk, I get hate calls all the time for breaking into programming and against. You can't make everyone happy. And screaming at the person who answers the phone and telling them that they and the station can go to hell and you'll never watch them again means absolutely nothing. For every lost viewer for something stupid and small, we gain about 100 more.

The people who say they'll never watch again are often the ones who call or write back a week later to complain again. They're either idle threats or they hate watch.
