News Center Maine (WCSH/WLBZ) is adding a 4PM newscast starting June 1, replacing Daily Blast Live. Hearst's WMTW was first Maine station to start airing news in the time slot in September 2016.  No Bangor stations currently air news at 4. In Portland, Sinclair's WGME will be the only Big 3 station not airing news at 4 (they run Judge Judy.)

Is DBL being moved? I'd imagine a 4pm newscast would pull in better numbers than DBL.

"And even then for select people." So, are they never going to let some people back in?

The "select people" is prioritizing who will be let back in the building first. Departments such as sales wouldn't be as important as allowing anchors or meteorologists or technical staff back in building first. The "never going to let some people back in" applies more to possibly allowing (emphasizing that) some people at a later date to permanently work from home. Should this happen would these people be forced to permanently stay home and work? Well, I can't see how that could be possible as for some having a physical office space is much more practical.

  3. Holy God some of you have become WAY too emotionally invested in this. I've said that before. If Scripps doesn't like how something looks, they can update it later. It's happened before and it will happen again.

Am I the biggest fan of it? No. Do I think it's serviceable? Yes. A couple tweaks here and there and it honestly would be fine. My biggest beef above all is the weight of the font. Very very light for lower thirds as big as they are. Make it bold and it'll fill things out much more nicely.

As @Weeterssaid, the average viewer really doesn't care. They're too concerned thinking they're being lied too anyway.

  4. Tegna CEO Dave Lougee released a 21 minute video to employees discussing the status of their COVID operations and answer employee questions. Personnel will be allowed back in building on a market-by-market basis, and even then only for select people. He doesn't foresee any future furloughs or change to employee benefits. He also hinted that some people may be allowed to work from home permanently, but that wouldn't be decided until a much later undetermined date.

Give Tegna slack for what you want, but they have done an excellent job being transparent with their employees about what the company's philosophy and approach to this crisis is. That's certainly a lot more than some other companies have done or would ever do.

Is WTSP seriously switching to this logo?

What is with all of these ridiculous throwbacks?

    TEGNA has no branding game.

The WTSP re-design is certainly a...choice. Sometimes what old really isn't new again.

But if Tegna "has no branding game" because they have stations with a network logo attached to a channel number or call letters, then 90% of all stations in the country "has no branding game."

With the gradual re-opening of the economy, still-closed restaurants in some places decided to take it upon themselves to reopen in full force regardless of the orders in place (with the proper "social distancing" protocols in place, of course)

One in Spanish Fort Alabama, decided to reopen and got their hand slapped by the state health department.

Why would I be posting this story here?

Because if you read the WPMI story, the restaurant in question is owned by Greg Peterson, who is the primary anchor at WPMI.

Can someone say conflict of interest here?

How is that a conflict of interest?

Interesting. They're using the old look tonight. I wonder if they were test running it with the (I'm assuming) special live stream.

Apparently, there is a big question mark on WCNC's Chief Meteorologist who may have broke the furlough, even though it was certainly the responsible thing to do. He may have even stood up against his company.

Bravo, I say. Anyone who puts the public interest ahead of personal or corporate gain gets an A+ in my book.

Also, like the article says, I'd be interested to know how TEGNA characterizes this "breach" of furlough, since he was acting as an independent meteorologist. Just scrubbing through the stream, he doesn't appear to use any TEGNA graphics, but I'm not going to sit and watch all 2 1/2 hours just to see how diligent he is to not mention WCNC.

At any rate, I think we can all agree that when multiple tornado warnings are happening in and around the main city in your market, you have to pull out all the stops. I'm sure the other meteorologists did a fantastic job, but you need your Chief in an outbreak, big or small, to really drive the coverage.

While it wasn't explicitly mentioned in Tegna's furlough rules, all employees were told to not do ANYTHING work related during the furlough, not even answer an email, or else they will have been considered to have worked and their furlough will need to be moved, complicating the process. That extended to social media: don't post anything at all to your talent pages, work or otherwise. The only exception would be if a talent used their page as their personal social media page too, in which case they can post, just not anything pertaining to work.

Also, the chief isn't always available to do severe weather coverage. There are other meteorologists who are more than capable of handling the situation, and it gives them great exposure.

Glass Lewis & Co was particularly scathing toward Kim

    Quote

“Given what we found to be several unverifiable or flatly false allegations levied by the Dissident with respect to the company’s performance and strategic plan, as well as a lack of specific ideas to better optimize Tegna’s performance going forward, together with Standard General’s own track record of pushing for ‘transformative’ M&A in the industry … we believe the extensive board changes that Standard General seeks are unwarranted and that Tegna shareholders would be better served by voting for the entire board slate proposed by the company.”

ISS seemed skeptical of him too

    Quote

“While Soo Kim’s industry experience and significant ownership of Tegna support the logic of his candidacy, Kim’s apparent focus on conducting a strategic review and selling the company, when taken in concert with the cautionary tale of Media General’s sale process, seems to outweigh the potential benefit of his personal involvement in this case,” ISS wrote.

  11. From the Tegnaverse today:

    https://www.tegna.com/tegna-applauds-iss-rejection-of-soohyung-kim-and-his-campaign-to-replace-leadership-of-tegna-board/

Quoted are a few paragraphs I found interesting. The presser has a lot more.

    Quote

TEGNA applauds ISS’s rejection of Soohyung Kim and two other Standard General nominees and their campaign to replace the leadership of the TEGNA board. However, TEGNA disagrees with the recommendation to vote for one Standard General nominee.

ISS says in its rejection of Mr. Kim: “Kim’s role in pursuing a suboptimal deal while on the board of Media General is directly relevant to the situation at hand. Shareholders must also be concerned about the potentially heightened impact of boardroom dysfunction, given the current environment and the attendant need for management and the board to focus on navigating through the pandemic.”

    [...]

Further, the TEGNA Board’s actions demonstrate that such a check is not necessary. As ISS acknowledges in its report: “TEGNA’s board has undergone significant refreshment in recent years and makes convincing arguments that it is neither entrenched nor unwilling to consider an eventual sale.”

Exactly and I think Gray is doing it the right way by recognizing that their employees should be taken care of. Tegna on the other hand, is doing it the wrong way.

What Lougee needs and should worry about is making sure that his employees are taken care of and paid in full, they don't need their paychecks reduced under any circumstances

Tegna has been ferocious in getting its employees to work from home. Anyone that doesn't have to absolutely be in the building is going home. Many stations have had to shell some serious cash to make sure that happens.

  13. Expanding news in KC. WDAF is adding a half hour at 5 p.m. Saturdays because of no sports, and KSHB is adding a 3 p.m. newscast. They recently made their 10 p.m. an hour too.

    Can't be long now.

Those ghost images do so much for the look.

KSHB debuted the weather gfx. After seeing them on a 55" TV, I don't understand why everyone hates them so much. They looked pretty nice actually. Of note, KSHB has ditched WSI and picked up Baron. They used chimes on the 7-Day. News will transition in a few weeks.

A gripe I now have with the look are the banners and lower thirds being semi-transparent. Just make it opaque.

Interestingly, looks like Tegna has wiped clear their job postings. Only 2 are listed when there are usually dozens. Wonder if it's due to COVID-19 or the acquisition attempts?

    https://www.jobs.net/jobs/tegna/en-us/all-jobs/

There's only one on-air job listed now. The rest are technical positions. Given how Tegna has extended their WFH policy until April 10th and are heavily encouraging people to not come to work, it shouldn't be a surprise that job interviews are on hold.

There was a Talkback 16 segment that aired earlier tonight.

They did have a portion where callers were calling in about the "new changes" that WNEP was promoting in the lead up to today (its toward the end of the video).

    https://www.wnep.com/mobile/article/opinion/talkback/talkback-16-coronavirus-and-kurts-hair/523-4d31169b-73c0-404e-b200-391d597d762b

"I noticed you changed the color from purple to blue, so I'm hoping it's going to stay blue for every newscast."

Oh that poor man. I can only imagine his horror when he woke up in the morning and when he saw that TalkBack using blue, purple and orange. Joking aside, I wonder what kind of changes Tegna might have made if they had this type of feed back in 2017/18. It makes one think if this is WNEP's sly knock at Tegna.

Sky 5 was severely damaged when the tornado (then at EF2 intensity) hit Tune Airport. When I first heard that the helicopter was parked there while watching a live stream of their 7:00 a.m. newscast Wednesday morning, thought it seemed odd, considering that many news helicopters are housed on their station’s studio grounds, not at general aviation airports like John C. Tune Airport. Considering the airport suffered $93 million in damage and WTVF’s studios escaped damage, putting the helicopter at the WTVF building would have prevented this.

    image.jpeg.67d5502743fad494093123579dca9685.jpeg

I'm curious if Scripps will even bother repairing it. Also, I would think most stations would keep their chopper at an airport. Most TV stations are not favorable locations for a helipad.
