This is what Trevor told me about the design of the set.

Kudos to them trying to not look as cookie cutter and uninspired as the other Tegna looks. Tegna really struggles with studio creativity. They're all so sterile.

And ugggh, I remember the weird period in the late aughts and early teens where NBC tried to turn their local websites into Flash-heavy 'everything local' with that rude LOCALS ONLY. slogan and the news buried deep down (and given 'casual' prose) for a failed attempt at 'cool and with it!' blogging instead. And of course, pre-Facebook reactions and hideous logos like the infamous PacMan one they used for Chicago.

I didn't need to be reminded about this trauma today.

This was all done in-house. Not by FX Group.

If they wanted to go for a coastal look, they did a very sterile and generic job at doing so.

It's an in house look? That changes how I see it some. There are some pretty good elements here, but I reckon they struggled in designing what exactly an idea like "coastal" might be (or whatever the theme they had in mind was). I give them credit for the effort because it certainly isn't bad.

Speculation but I have to say I wondered what they might do next. NBC is known for making knee-jerk decisions based on ratings. GMA has become the winner across the board in recent months but not necessarily because of its own strength, but because Today is hemorrhaging viewers. MTP has fallen to 3rd place behind FTN and This Week.

They do have a history of knee-jerking (Ann Curry), but there has been VERY vocal disdain for Chuck Todd online all year. It seems like every Sunday he's trending on twitter and it's never anything good. Granted, it's Twitter, and the people who are fans of NBC/MSNBC are ideologically to the left much like the company. Biggest criticisms of Todd I've seen is that he's moved too far right or, as an attempt to not seem like a left-leaning shill, he's tried (unsuccessfully) to play Devil's advocate or be more "neutral."

I think he got too big for his britches as time went on. He might have been an ok choice initially as a replacement, but I think it's clearly time to move on. It's the same situation with Andrea Mitchell.

  5. Looks pretty good. I wonder if this is the start of a Scripps-wide overhaul. Though if you're going to have so much blue, you may as well update the logo too, or at least add yellow accents.

  6. It's not the most impressive but it's serviceable with a clean look. It's bright and feels a bit tropical with the white and lighter blue shades. The shiplap (I learned a new word today) is unique to their credit, but odd. Kind of looks like they built a TV studio into the side of a house.

  7. I feel a lot of NBC inspiration here (much how CBSTM seems an exact inspiration of CNN). It's a very clean and polished look with just enough flare that it gets your attention. Subtle and not in your face.

If only ABC would get their act together and update WNT...

Back in the studio. Quite a few of the old fluorescent fixtures are still there, but with new diffusion on them, along with some new lights scattered around.

(Also, look closely at the screens in those pics... Are they chroma keying in a fake monitor for the Storm Chaser live shot????)

I don't think so? It's not the same person. The woman on screen is brunette with short sleeves. Whoever is at the key is blonde with elbow-length sleeves. Nor are they facing the same direction.

  9. I think it's fine. It works well for Omaha, really isn't a bad design at all, and they tried to add unique features like that view from the brick column. That black support beam could've been handled better, and the prompter setup is just bizarre. I can't imagine that will last for too long. That must have been a cost cutting measure.

It's still world's better than that disaster at KMTV.

Well, here are the other two SNF logos unveiled tonight.

I like the SNF. My only desire is to have the peacock filled in. Those brackets could maybe be a little tighter too.

  11. Depending on the market and how much news the station does, even a team of 5 can get stretched thin. Having a sixth can greatly reduce workload and allow for special projects.

I’m guessing they’re bringing in either students or grads from Mississippi State’s program - I know in the past it’s been one of the best broadcast meteorology programs in the country.

    Jim

Yes, they're adding students from Mississippi State as part of their team. Two of them are juniors and one in grad school (which is highly unusual to have a meteorology master working in broadcast). WCBI also does this to a far smaller degree. There's only 3, maybe 4, there.

  12. Some of you have impossibly high standards lol. It really isn't a bad look at all. I like the cool feeling of it, it's almost like a relief from the heat and humidity of the south.

What I will say is that it seems very bottom heavy with lighting. The top third is noticeably darker than the bottom third and the shadows seem a lot more pronounced. Small accent lighting could've helped add depth.

Graham Media has filed a petition to deny, based on the Jacksonville situation and that Apollo would be financing 4 stations there.

(An easy way out would be to mandate divestiture of one of the two duopolies there, as well as other conflicting market stations. Since I believe WJXT is #1 in the market, the duopoly with the #5 station would be the one to go, since that would be able to go to a single owner outright.)

    Quote

WJXT will be competing with four major network affiliates all financed by Apollo. “The imbalance will harm WJXT’s ability to fairly compete for viewers, advertising revenue, and local talent,” Graham said.

Graham also said that the two Tegna stations already operate a consolidated newsroom in Jacksonville, as do the CMG stations.

“There is little reason to think that approving this Transaction and aligning the financial interests of all four network affiliates would reverse this trend or lead to increased investment in local news—and Applicants fail to make a persuasive showing that it would in Jacksonville. To the contrary, private equity firms focused on the bottom line are particularly driven to achieve economic efficiencies by consolidating programming resources—resulting in less, not more, investment in local news and other community programming.,” Graham said.

They said the quiet part out loud.

Surprised this didn't get posted, but Deb McDermott sent a letter to all of Tegna saying no jobs would be cut. In the article they went on to say

    Quote

In response to a question about how the deal would be in the public interest, the companies responded that the transaction would create the largest minority-owned and female-led TV broadcasting company in U.S. history. “That would further the commission’s goal of increasing diversity in broadcast station ownership and management,” they said.

Like, that's fine and all and I'm glad to see it, but how does that really benefit Jane and John Doe living in Nowhereville, USA? Great! This mega-media company is ran by minorities and women. How does that help them when it comes to local news?
