The last of the cordillera stations to hold out finally switched yesterday.
I actually really like this version. The white variant with video underneath seems to add more...depth? Not sure what it is, but I think it looks better.

TV has a long history of second (third, fourth) chances. But, anyone leaving Gray for vaccination reasons would be wise to stay quiet. I already know of a few managers who won't hire a Gray castoff if they know that person refused a COVID-19 vaccine. Jumping to that local school district/hospital/animal shelter for P.R. won't be as easy either.
It's ironic. They allowed themselves to be canned because they didn't get
microchippedthe shot, but the way the environment currently is some will have trouble getting jobs elsewhere (TV or not) because...the vaccine is required.- 1

Looks like the Tegna change train is coming to WZDX in Huntsville on Monday as well. Gone is the WZDX Fox Nexstar era branding and logo. The new look will bring a return to Fox 54 brand, complete with the same 5 from WOI. The weather team posted on social media saying the new brand and full Tegna look will occur on Monday, Sept. 27th.
This is an upgrade in my book.

I saw the breaking variant of their L3s this morning at a glance and thought for some reason someone at work had changed the TV to CNN. Imitation is the best form of flattery (though I do prefer the CBS take). Still, you'd think someone from CBS would look at it in ideation in say "let's try to not look exactly like CNN."

Kind of has a European feel too it. The sunrise element is very out of place in a wide shot though - is that built in to the wall? I'm a bit disappointed to see them move out of 3C. The set still worked very well and has aged nicely.

This is bad production 101. How can anyone working in market #1 see this and think it's a good look? If you don't want her standing on a box because you don't want to see the box, either give them stools or cover the desk. The height differential also gives off a power disparity with the man towering over the woman.

News Director Chris Gregg is leaving Tegna's WVEC to join WHAS in Louisville.

I think te biggest problem is it's a 100% flat look next to elements that aren't flat. See the example of the WNT logo. The text has subtle gradients that give it depth while the black pearl doesn't. It looks better on the GMA look where everything is flat.

WTVJ looks very very nice. Disappointed to hear they canned the custom theme, it worked very well.

Is it the fact that she has so many hashtags in her tweet, or is it the way the video starts that's troubling you (w/her putting her makeup box down)?
Because of how staged it is lol. A picture would have sufficed.

While the normal KNTV opens look pretty rough, this special open, unbranded for random, primetime sports usage, is very clean. The white end screen is a nice alternative, and the station logo looks better, not being forced to stay between the vertical lines of the primary opens.
I really like the cut of music they used for the open. Majestic and simple. Also very surprised at how long the close was. Guessing they were wanting to kill some time before rejoining programming? It's a treat to see such long closes these days.
-
Something I think they could have done to personalize each open is replace the faint "NEWS" text in that horizontal wipe after the peacock with the call letters of each station. Just gives it a subtle little personality I think.

WHAS GM Christy Moreno is now following her news director to KING. WHAS now has no news director or GM.

Could we see Tegna stations tweaking their graphics soon?
I doubt it. Tegna is very dedicated to the T18 look. This seems like a one-off for WXIA because they wanted something different. A few stations might decide they want it, but I don't expect it to become a group-wide thing.

C Clarity isn't so bad if stations don't use the a capella cuts of it. C Clarity's biggest failing is its lack of versatility and range. You don't have many options of music to use.

I'm still not a fan of the anchor reading the open where a professional VO normally would. It lacks authority and sounds too casual. Also, who decided an anchor 2-shot with a lonely spiral staircase going to nowhere in between them was a good look? From that angle at least it looks like space they didn't know what to do with so they stuck a staircase there.

I do like how they incorporated it into transitions, though.

Both the peacock and eye had slight changes done in the past.
Yes, but with far more radical changes than what ABC is trying to pass this off as.

It's a black circle with three letters in it. It isn't really that special of a logo, but I guess of course they're going to try and sell the change as new! fresh! and innovative!. There, I said it. Get back to me when NBC or CBS tries to change up the peacock or eye.

Looks more like they slowed the video to match the music.

At this point in time, I think it's safe for me to say that Mr. Kim is declaring an all-out war on Tegna leadership.
Then he needs to also declare it on Tegna employees who get to vote for board members.

There are several huge reasons that News Nation is failing, in my opinion.
First.. the approach is all wrong. Stories from the Nexstar stations need to be local stories that can be easily adapted to national interest. It's all in the writing. You have to write those local lead-in's, NATIONALLY. You have to structure them differently. To a good imaginative writer, this is not difficult. If the news writer or producer is enthusiastic about it, the magic words are there. You simply have to make that local story in Peoria, interesting to people in Raleigh-Durham. You can only do that in the writing. You can also make a difference by re-editing the package, taking out some of the local references. It is NOT difficult.
Second... the anchors are all wrong for that show. Frankly, they are boring, seemingly uninterested in any story they're reading. Part of it are the words they're reading, but most of it is just flat deliveries. They just do not seem comfortable.
Third... timing is everything. News Nation has changed time on several occasions. It's not finding an audience because people never know where to find IT.
Fourth is the news approach. The world does not need another Fox News anymore than it needs another CNN. It does need a national newscast that is free of any political coverage. Yeah, I said it. Who cares what's going on in Washington right now? Who cares about Democrats and Republicans and what they think? In a political season, yes. Do political stories. Outside of a political season, can them. Nobody cares.
There are other subtle changes that News Nation needs to make, that won't get made. I crossed News Nation off my watch list after the second or third show. I haven't watched it since, and won't. I also haven't even bothered to watch Sinclair's National Desk. In my opinion, they are both and equally gigantic wastes of valuable viewer time.
And a way to drive viewership? Make a half-hour or hour long show to syndicate on their stations. It could follow the "PM/Evening Magazine" model. Have a bank of stories that are chosen and promoted, and that drive viewership to the main channel. It could be localized in the larger markets, especially if it's a story that originated locally or in the region.
And if all else fails, see if CNN still has the "jukebox" they used for Headline News in the 90s. Call me old fashioned, sometimes I just want to know what's going on at a random time....
And when HLN jumped the shark, the last days of the All News Channel was a good watch. They essentially did what Nexstar should have been doing all along. Using THEIR stations to present content to a national audience.
I think where they're pulling stories from is important too. They're right about writing a local story in Timbuktu so that it's interesting to people living in Timbukthree, but what market is Timbuktu? If you're trying to take a small-market package and make it national worthy, you're going to run into a quality issue with said story likely coming from a young, inexperienced journalist who isn't yet capable of writing to that level or thinking that large.

I wonder how much they cut high-level executive salaries to save some cash too.
Hahahahaha no they probably didn't. Wouldn't be surprised if after this some of the execs got a bonus.

They dwelled on Tiger Woods a little much last night. Why do we need a rehash of the guys last win at the Masters and how everybody felt about it that lasted almost as long as the original report? The other issue is revealing so much in the teaser they are literally repeating themselves word for word in the newscast. I’ve been watching some of the old ABC newscasts lately and this kind of sloppy stuff sticks out like a sore thumb.
Tagging off of this regarding GMA , but I thought GMA's super this morning of "Tiger Breaks His Silence" was a bit off key given how horrendously his legs were crushed. Any other cliche newsspeak lower would have been better.

New TEGNA graphics

This is correct. It's only on full screen gfx. Minor changes, but they're definitely improvements. Bigger elements, more depth, color gradients, and some updated animations. It isn't as flat as it was.
