  1. I like Chroma Cues. It could use some updates (as I've said countless times) the current cuts are from 1997. Their graphics aren't the worst as mentioned. The overuse of Helvetica extended however ruins it for me. Some of their graphics are even difficult to read because of it. But the O&O look would be a massive improvement. And Upchurch I believe is around still, I've heard some of his most recent radio imaging (2012/3) and he can definitely bring it up to modern times without loosing the overall feel of the theme.
  2. Great, probably a shell for KSWO/Drewry. The reason I think so is because the buyer is from Lawton specifically, which is where Drewry's from. Fortunately though, KSWO has actually managed to keep KAUZ mostly separate despite the JOA/SSA. They have to be applauded for that.
  3. They literally ported everything over from old to new. One of the reporters listed on the station page isn't there anymore. And who the hell uses myspace anymore? Having said that I'm glad Gray owns channel 8 now. they will definitely invest in upgrading their infrastructure. The live truck they have is from the 80's. That alone tells you they should be lucky to have Gray as owners. HD in six months is my prediction.
  4. Never in a million years did I think this would happen, but: Now, remember, this station did not have a website until 2011. And 50 cents bets that they are still using the 1998 Fox Affiliate Theme music.
  5. KPHO only had a 5min 10pm news when they became a CBS affiliate? When did they expand it to a full 35 minutes?
  6. I believe Karen Adams was responsible for the sleekness of WGHP in the early 90's as she was CSD. Of course now she's at WJZY ruining that station...
  7. KTVB, another Gannett station, also had one of these a few days back: Now this idea was pretty cool when WKYC did it but now it's starting to get old...
  8. So, the Express News finally got around to reporting what I posted here Saturday night, that John Honoré is no longer on the air with KSAT. Regular TV news viewers complained to Jeanne Jakle, the TV columnist, in hopes of getting an answer. Here's what she found out (full article): Let's translate what Honoré said: "My contract was not renewed, but I can't tell you that, because if I did, KSAT will fire me. They were eager to bring in that new girl, so they have me doing behind the scenes work until my contract is up then I'm out of a job." Of course I don't know if that's actually what he said but I'm thinking that's what happened. I have no clue what he would be doing off-air since KSAT really has no need for him. Maybe they are being very nice and honoring the rest of his contract so that way he has some income while he looks for another job. KSAT used to far and away be the station you'd want to work for if you desired a stable career in this market. Then 20 year GM Jim Joslyn retired, followed by 30 year ND Jim Boyle. They bumped up the deuce to ND a few weeks back, and I guess she's starting to make changes now. Maybe she felt there needed to be a female weather person here? I don't know... And to justify Jakle's last sentence. I guess she doesn't follow the local news biz outside of SA. If she were to log on to FTV Live she would see this practice of not telling the viewers what happened to their employees is pretty commonplace. Even though the station's go out and report everybody else's business. BTW, his bio is still accessible here. And I could've sworn I just saw Kelly Slifka in one of their promos. Wonder if they have plans to hire him on full time?
  9. Posting this without comment: Edit 7AM: You know the other day I said Katie Vossler joined channel 12 as a meteorologist. I have found out she's doing weekend evenings, and the 4pm was just a way to welcome her in. Looks like longtime weekend evening meteorologist John Honoré is out. You can no longer access his bio through their bios page but you can still access it through a back link. He also took his station facebook page down. Oh well, I liked John. Thanks KSAT for letting him go without telling us but this is typical of most news stations nowadays.
  10. Surprised no one else has mentioned this but looks like KSDK is in hot water over this (story from KMOV). And KSAT has added meteorologist Katie Vossler, previously of KETK, to their weather team. She debuted onair during the 4pm news but Steve Browne was back at 5. She will be only the second female meteorologist currently working in the market. I think she does just the 4pm news but they didn't exactly say what her role would be. Maybe she's relieving Steve Browne so he can focus on the 5, 6 and 10pm news. His contract runs out later in the year and he has said he'd like to scale back his role at that time. Surprised they did not hire Kelly Slifka for this role, since he had filling in on weekend mornings during the holidays, and he was professional. Vossler's pretty good though.
  11. KOKH has always had high turnover. First of all it's Sinclair, they don't pay much as it is especially when you compare them with the other three stations there. Secondly they are a distant last place in OKC. Basically everyone just goes there to get their two years experience and then move on.
  12. Here's an article from the Gannett Blog pertaining to the rollout of the new website design. The local newspapers are getting this design as well. http://gannettblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/digital-badly-misses-year-end-site-app.html If I see somebody ask this one more time... :bang:
  13. Either it was a slow news day or this was a clever ad placement cooked up by the sales department... "Good Morning Memphis After Hours"? I'm guessing they're copying Fox and Friends' "After the Show Show". Not as entertaining though...
  14. Meteorologist Kate Thornton leaves WICZ in Binghamton, NY and joins WSYR in Syracuse as the weekend meteorologist, replacing Julia Weiden who left to go to a station in the Southeast (we still don't know which station, but we do know it's in Mississippi). Dave Eichorn their former chief met now covers weather at 5:30, 10, and 11pm. Dave Longley the current chief moves to noon, 5, and 6pm. And Jim Teske who used to just cover noon weather now does The Morning News. So they've basically filled all the vacancies now. EDIT: Not quite. Looks like sports reporter Lindsay Liquori is no longer with WSYR either. Her bio has been stripped from their site. The last time she tweeted was Jan 7, so this must've been fairly recent. There appears to be no article elsewhere confirming this however. Her job has been posted. They also have not yet replaced Caroline Gable's position (traffic reporter and Bridge Street host). And they're looking for another reporter still. So three vacancies at the market-leading Nexstar station.
  15. Alright, I just noticed this article from my local newspaper the Express News and here I'll analyze it: News to me KSAT is starting up their own lifestyle show later this year. I wonder where they would put it. At 9 they currently air Live with Kelly and Michael which does very well in the ratings here. I do not think a local production would catch on and I know quite a few people who would rather watch Live than a local production. Can't really do anything at 10 because of the View and at 11 they air The Chew on a one day tape delay to accommodate their noon news. So airing it at 2 or 3 would be more realistic. Anyways it would be interesting to see what ends up happening there. Of course they are moving in to a brand new and much bigger building in the spring so they actually have space to do a lifestyle show. Hopefully a real news set accompanies the new building. Surprised by Jeanne Jakle's (the author) comment: "It also would be lovely if S.A.'s local lifestyle shows diversified more. The opening chatter about the latest happenings and trends is OK, but does it have to lead into what frequently resembles a string of infomercials?" The whole point of these shows is to be an infomercial. That's another reason "Live" does better than KENS and the Sinclair duop's shows. Regarding the comment about crime: I totally agree with that guy. All the newscasts here (with KSAT and KABB being the worst offenders) in one way or another, portray the city to be ridden with crime and there is a world of crime right outside your doorstep, but that can't be further from the truth. Yes, crime happens but not every street corner like the newscasts here make it out to be. Literally, the rundowns of KSAT and KABB are more-so, shooting, fire, wreck, burglary, arrest, etc. KENS and WOAI do try to cover more substantial news but still cover quite a bit of crime. And now with Sinclair owning both WOAI and KABB, WOAI has definitely added in more crime to the mix. And no, they will not interview the victims/their families to get their take. That requires effort, and the whole point of covering crime is that it requires little effort. Just send a photog, shoot some video, shoot some police spokesperson answering questions, trim it down. Boom. Done. I agree on living up to the channel name. Are you listening "Weather Channel"? As for Travel Channel mirroring Food Network more and more, well Scripps Networks owns Travel now. All of the Scripps networks (as well as most cable networks) are unwatchable now as they rely too much on reality based programming (boo) and not on real shows like in the past. YES to the revealing clothes. I do not watch the news for that reason; I watch to get informed in a direct and unbiased manner. Remember when women had to wear a suit but now just about anything goes for them (especially the bare arms)? Yet men still have to wear a suit and tie... What's the point of anchoring Sunday through Thursday? Who really cares who's anchoring what day as long as a newscast is there? I think stations should still do the Monday through Friday scheduling and let the main team spend time with their family on the weekends. Weekend anchors are usually younger. I agree 100% with this comment: “'All our newspeople should take a crash course in pronunciation of San Antonio streets and Hispanic names,' suggested Diana Aguirre Martinez." As I've said before, Jessica Headley the traffic anchor for KABB couldn't and still can't pronounce Hispanic names properly. She's a great traffic anchor, that's just the one thing she needs to work on. There are other personalities from out of town that came here too and well they can't pronounce them properly either. But Headley is one of the worst offenders. Danielle Saar is another one from out of town who's not very good either. Contrast that with Shelly Miles who's been here almost 15 years or Officer Marcus Trujillo/Detective Robert Dart on KSAT 12. Those three excel at it. BTW, all stations should copy KSAT and use real police officers to do the traffic. Quality of the traffic report is so much better versus someone who is there merely as "eye candy". I agree with the chitchat thing. I am sick of happy talk on the evening news. Just give us the news. Now on the morning news I think the relationship with the viewer is different. I believe the atmosphere is different and there I think it is OK to deliver the news while having a conversation with them at the same time. The people who do morning news tend to be very versatile, as I've seen them smiling during the morning news (unless there's a serious story of course) but during the noon news they keep a straight face the entire time. Again the audience is different. Usually people watching the local noon news are doing so from work. Positive news? Haha, look at WJZY in Charlotte who has definitely been emphasizing positive news over the negative. Look where they're at, especially on the weekend shows. I couldn't agree with that viewer more. YES YES YES to more local coverage. Just say no to national and world news during the local news. You can get that somewhere else.
  16. Nonsense, new owner can dump the extra news and restore the syndies. I still think Sinclair is the favorite for this station (maybe the ones in Montana too).
  17. Quality of the Greenspun school is no where close to that of the Mizzou program. Why do you think a lot of people who are in the business or want to be move to Missouri just to attend J-school? Mizzou is one of the best J-schools in the country and I would've attended it if it wasn't so expensive out-of-state. Anyways I honestly think his wife would continue to maintain the station but UNLV would not. The station is Sinclair's to lose. The station is also overstaffed for that market and the product they put out. Jim only bought the station in the first place because KORK-TV, KSNV's predecessor, pre-empted too many network shows in the 70s...
  18. Two weeks ago you'll probably remember that I posted that WCPO reporter Kendall Herold drove under the influence and the station took one week to report it. Well this time around, WQAD (Moline, IL) main anchor Jason Fechner got charged with DUI and this time his station reported on it the same day during the 5PM newscast. However, viewers are angry WQAD chose to do this. So they took to Facebook to let WQAD know. Here's how it went down courtesy of TVSpy:
  19. Remember when KUTV reporter Brooke Graham fainted on TV two weeks ago? Well I was watching Entertainment Tonight with Nancy O'Dell earlier and she interviewed Graham exclusively. Nice to see shes' handling it positively and in good spirits. Check it out: http://bcove.me/2ixhvl7q (fast forward to 16:08 to see the interview) Edited at 3:20AM CT: I forgot to mention this and I see it hasn't been mentioned here earlier. This from TVSpy: I'm betting this was handed down by Gannett corporate. It'd suck to see this happen to KENS' Chopper 5 here (even though they lease it, not own). It's nice seeing the big 3 here having unique helicopter shots.
  20. First of all I came across this nearly year old interview from D Magazine with Perry Sook: http://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-ceo/2013/march/breakfast-with-perry-sook-of-nexstar-broadcasting This is my favorite quote: Try telling that to Sinclair... And also, when did Nexstar take over the Citadel stations (excluding KLKN and WLNE)? They are listed on Nexstar's stations list already and Nexstar is mentioned on the jobs sections of the station sites. But I don't recall the FCC greenlighting it yet...
  21. Here's a real treat: a tour from the 1960's of the WBOC studios in Salisbury. The title says it is from the early 1960's, but I think it's later than that. The Salisbury Mall did not open until 1968. Late 60s/early 70s is probably more accurate. Amazingly the TV station is still in the same building today, but it is has been renovated and added on to several several times, most recently in 2008. And the radio stations have long since moved out and are now owned by the Sinclair of radio (Clear Channel) under different callsigns. It's interesting to see how much has changed, both in the industry overall and at that station, over a forty year span.
  22. So my predictions in that other thread were wrong. Glad they closed in today. EDIT#1: Interesting they are assigning KTVK to "KPHO Broadcasting Corporation" and not Meredith itself like KMOV was. EDIT#2: Obviously I struck a raw nerve with this comment: I will be more mindful of who sees this forum in the future with my wording. I apologize for calling your site "dumb". This is the first time in seven months of posting here this has happened. I'll try to be more careful in the future. However my general opinion of the situation remains the same. I would not have asked any additional questions. I think she covered it all in her blog. If she had anything extra to say, great. But honestly I would have left her alone. Sure she's been going through a lot lately with all the media coverage which I assume she's not used to. That's my two cents.
  23. All to save money (younger people are almost always cheaper than the experienced people; stations pay more for the experience and the older people won't work for the amount the younger people do). They'll also be happy once Brian Busby is off their payroll whenever he retires because they can hire somebody younger for much cheaper. I just read that the first meteorologist won't start until April. Why? Is this person in another market or are they still in college or what? If you already hired them why aren't they are able to start until later this year? Very perplexing...
  24. That's WAPI/WVTM in Birmingham, a good 1,200 miles from central Minnesota.
  25. Thankfully it wasn't serious. I watch this reporter frequently with her identical twin sister who work at the same station. Both are great personalities and I could see them at the network level one day. If you read the blog post you could definitely see her bubbly side coming out. Good now she knows it's not serious she is laughing it off. Also "24 Salt Lake" is dumb. She basically had her comment in that blog post they link to yet they bother her anyway for another comment. I'm guessing she never wrote/called them back. Good on her. It's a low-rated weekend morning show. Maybe the producer knew the Graham sisters have this problem and so he/she told the director not to switch back. If I was producing the show, I wouldn't have necessarily cut back until I could tell for sure it was going to be serious. I may have done a double box with the anchor on the other side questioning the incident. Now I'm guessing you usually don't read this thread because I've speculated on this (and Rhiannon's future; it's pretty obvious they want her as main anchor) on at least two occasions here. GREAT news! While I wish him the best in recovering, it's time for some fresh blood there to run the station, and someone with enough audacity to fire Pero/Baier. They better not promote Pero to GM. IIRC, Grief used to be the ND before becoming GM.
