  1. KSAT has hired Garrett Brnger as a reporter. As you may recall this was the same reporter who got into a fight at Hooters with Vince DeMentri back when they worked at WICS in Springfield, IL. The two were dismissed and so Garrett is trying to get back on his feet here in SA.

Also, KDVR has hired Mike Barz as the 7 and 10 PM anchor. I want to say the he and Tera Barz split up because she seems to be sticking in Jacksonville and a commenter on the facebook page of her PR firm called her "Tera Williams".

    Stay tuned...

  2.

@sanewsguy so has Channel 4 & FOX 29 merge into one location? Did they move into Channel4's building which was in Downtown SA? At one time both stations were separate, but they did move into someone building? Also did KSAT12 move into their new building yet, and are they going to get an actual set in the new digs?

Yes, WOAI and KABB have merged into the old KABB building at 410 and Babcock. The old WOAI building is currently vacant and on the market. This move occurred back in mid-December.

KSAT has been in their "new" building since early last year. I use new in quotations because I just found out today in fact, that their "new" building is really just an addition to the older building. The newsroom, lobby and most of the offices are in the newer part. But the operations actual studio itself are in the original building still. Which explains why their moving weekend was actually very flawless. Unfortunately we're not told that and they basically misled everyone...

So yes, they still have a virtual set. And since they have had the same CSD since 1997, that won't change until he leaves. (sigh) Just like were stuck with the same old one tired cut of The One and Only from 2003 and a really awful voice over guy who shouldn't be doing voice overs (no not Scott Chapin,

who does the majority of the voiceovers on 12 now).
  3. KABB has officially made Jessica Headley their new morning anchor replacing Monica Taylor. Headley had been filling in for her. Good to see her get the promotion. Not sure if they are going to make Jennifer Barbaro Headley's replacement or if they are going to go external on that hire, but something tells me they may go for the latter. Kristina De Leon or the anchors themselves have also done the traffic report so it remains to be seen what they'll do.

Here is the new open for The NOW Detroit:

This is awful. I know not to expect much from Scripps but what happened to quality control? The plastering of their logo on the open looks cheap and out of place. This mismatched VO with the Now logo just feels stupid. And while the Inergy morning cut is probably my favorite out of that entire package, it doesn't fit the show, Now's general format or the open AT ALL.

I mean it does seem straight news but I still couldn't watch this. With them standing in their dated looking newsroom with fast moving camera shots and too much clutter on the screen. I just hope they realize The Now is dumb and pull the plug on it. If it was really "7 Action News at 4" then I could watch it. But with this format, no. I'm sure the viewers feel the same way. Sorry that you, the WXYZ employees and their viewers are stuck with Scripps as an owner.

  5. That music cut didn't really surprise me, I sorta thought they were going to go with it. KENS uses this cut for their close, and I can see why. It sounds powerful for a close but doesn't do the open justice. The voiceover guy is also too soft and clashes with the music. But this transition was definitely the smoothest of all the London stations. Good job.

  6. Gannett would have a little difficulty buying KTXD as they currently have a JSA with KFWD. And, WFAA also handles KFWD's MC (at least prior to the Belo/Gannett merger.) I flat out forgot about that when I proclaimed Gannett would buy KTXD last spring and further elaborated my reasoning a month later. I guess I have a big plate of crow to eat on that one. Although, I'm still a bit puzzled why they broke off KCEB.

You would be incorrect as WFAA broke their ties with KFWD nearly three years ago...

  7. KABB announces Monica Taylor, their morning coanchor, is leaving to be the spokesperson at CPS (our utility company).

Jessica Headley, their traffic reporter, is going to fill in while they conduct a "national search" for her replacement. Good choice because she is really good the times she has filled in, and I have also met her a couple times and she is very nice and genuine. She had problems when she first started but has dramatically improved since then and deserves a promotion.

Hopefully they will just elevate Headley to the permanent spot and then bring Jennifer Barbaro (who is usually Headley's traffic fill in when she is away) on full time rather than hire externally. Keep GOOD talent that we San Antonio viewers are familiar with rather than bring in some out of towner who will struggle to fit in at Fox 29.

Going out of town for your traffic reporter hire isn't a good move sometimes too, just look at KENS5...

    Channel 6 = WTVJ = NBC

    Channel 4 = WFOR = CBS

I think you got a little confused.

No I'm not confused. Remember Adam Kuperstein does an afternoon show on 560 WQAM, which is owned by CBS. CBS owns channel 4. NBC owns channel 6. CBS competes against NBC. Do you really think CBS wants an employee of WQAM to also work at their competitor? Read between the lines.

I believe Joe Rose also got pushed out for the same reason. CBS doesn't want him as the main morning guy on WQAM and then doing sports on WTVJ, when they can use him on their own property (WFOR), which I read here is exactly what they're doing.

  9.

Could it be they want someone (in this case Jawan) with more news anchoring experience anchoring the evening newscasts? Adam used to be a sports anchor/reporter but then transitioned to news anchor a few years ago. I read somewhere where Adam was supposed to anchor the mornings but they put him on evenings instead.

I think you're right but like I said CBS owns both WQAM (where he has a midday show) and WFOR and I wouldn't want to think they want him on their competition.

So maybe he was already going to leave anyways and they felt that Jawan is the best person to move in that slot. I also wonder if they would move Keith Jones back to mornings.

  10.

Possible changes coming to NBC owned WTVJ in Miami:

    http://www.ftvlive.com/todays-news/2015/3/18/anchor-shake-up-to-hit-miami-station

Basically it says moving Jawan Strader from mornings to evenings and hiring a new person to take over for the weekday mornings. No word on what will happen with current weeknight anchor Adam Kuperstein.

Maybe CBS is pushing him out at channel 6 just like they did with Joe Rose? I don't think it's a surprise, it was bound to happen sooner or later.
  11. I got bored and went and found the original post .

AI-SA-TX said it'll take time for them to get new equipment in, since all of the LSB stations use Chyron. So I'm assuming that's why the on-screen graphics lack the rundown and animated looks.

The response has been relatively muted in Tyler, with the exception of a few people noting their graphics are being cut off/letterboxed. For what it's worth, the strategy, if it was one, not to advertise the look may have worked out, although it may have more to do with not pushing USA Today anymore since the two are divorcing later this year.

I thought their legacy stations used Chyron though, do they not?

And you'd think Gannett would've upgraded KIDY's production controls away from the TriCaster but I guess that's not happening...

  12. I agree, this company is destroying itself slowly. There's a reason I said Sinclair is a far better broadcaster than Scripps. Yes they have their stupid must-runs but for the most part they are hands off, and they give their people the resources to do their job adequately.

I wouldn't be surprised if another media group like COX Media Group buys Scripps within two years and rights the ship at these stations. Yes they would suck the personality out of most of their talent but in this instance they need it. Cox will cut the crap like "trending internet topics" and get back to real news.

    We can only hope, right?

  13. So I've been watching WOAI at 5pm all week and last week and I think they made an anchor change. Evy Ramos now coanchors at 5 with Delaine Mathieu. Previously it had been Mathieu and Randy Beamer. Beamer still appears at 6 and 10 with Ramos. Don't know why they made the change.

  14.

KSHB was actually winning the 5 and 6pm and was a solid second at 4pm before The NOW was implemented. Now they're stuck with it and there's nothing they can do. So KSHB HAS had success, and would have been able to sustain that success if it wasn't for, and I will forever attest this, the NOW. Going from first to last after the NOW started airing isn't a coincidence.

As for Mark Clegg, who the hell knows. I don't even think they know anymore at this point. The job positing is still up, so they're obviously still looking, but apparently haven't found what they want yet. Evidently it's not NOW host Justin Wilfon or else they would have just named him his replacement by now. He anchors the 6pm every night with Jadiann. On a fact checking note, Clegg left last July, so I don't think the opening has been open for over a year.

No I was talking about the Assistant News Director. I remember their old GM and ND left around the same time and then once they hired their current GM and ND the old AND left. I don't want to look up specifics but that's how I remember it. When was the current management hired anyways? I want to say early 2013 but can't remember.

Yeah I've seen clips of KSHB and saw Justin Wilfon on the 5 and 6 a month or two ago. I've noticed about The NOW is they like to keep news talent separate from the talent who appears on it.

When I have a day off next month I will check out KSHB again on their stream to see if they have changed from the last time I saw them about a year ago. Also I will check out WXYZ to see how their approach is. Scripps has been very cookie cutter and standardized about the talent they hire, the way the newscasts are stacked, the feel of them. If you've seen one station you've seen them all...

It's just sad they didn't retain Journal's management and leave the existing Scripps people to tend to the newspapers. They actually do a decent job with newspapers still. This comes from a frequent reader of the Caller-Times.
